I recently dined at Sumo Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar in Hoover, Alabama, and it was an enjoyable experience overall. 
Hibachi Experience & Atmosphere
As with many hibachi-style restaurants, the presentation was both entertaining and impressive. The chefs showcased their skills with flair, making the meal a delightful spectacle. The atmosphere was lively and inviting, perfect for both families and groups celebrating special occasions.
Service & Portions
The servers were attentive and ensured our needs were met throughout the meal. The portions were generous—so much so that we had plenty to take home for later. The food was delicious, with the hibachi dishes cooked to perfection and the sushi fresh and flavorful.
Additional Charges
One aspect to be aware of is the nearly $10 service charge added to the bill, which is not considered part of the tip. This means that tipping your server is still expected on top of this fee. Additionally, there’s an $8 charge for sharing a plate, which seemed a bit steep given the ample portion sizes that could easily feed two people with leftovers. 
Final Thoughts
Despite these additional charges, the overall dining experience at Sumo Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar was positive. If you’re in the Hoover area and in the mood for a fun and flavorful hibachi meal, I would recommend giving this restaurant a try.

This restaurant used to be one of our “go-to” places that was always good. For some reason, it seems to be sliding in a negative direction. The service was good, but the chef and the food was subpar. The rice and the noodles were tasteless, and the steak and vegetables overcooked. The chef appeared to be rattled and his cooking showed it. Definitely not worth the $150 we paid for the meal for 4. Will not be seeking to go back for a while.

I was not impressed with this restaurant the service was not the best. I ordered Shrimp Yakisoba, waitress asked “protein I wanted”, I was like shrimp. I thought that was strange since Shrimp is clearly the protein. I even pointed to the item on the menu when ordering. 10 minutes later, the waitress shows up with shrimp fried rice. I’m like that was not what I ordered. How did shrimp Yaki-soba(noodles) sound like shrimp fried rice? I had to wait another 10mins for my order to come out correctly. The food was ok but nothing to write home about. The presentation of the food was great though.

Had a bad experience at the restaurant today for my husband birthday. The service as terrible and we have visited this location multiple times. Tonight it was terrible, very very small portions didn’t have anything to bring home. Normally I can’t finish my food. The cook put my chicken on my husband plate and gave my daughter rice and I asked for double noodles. When I told him that she only wanted rice he stated “ ohh yea my bad”. The other people at the table whom we did not know also experienced bad service they too complained to management about portion size and the cook burning the food. Our waiter never came to the table after giving our drinks, I had to flag down a different waiter to get the check for $130 which we paid in full. They even sung my husband happy birthday after we were getting ready to leave. Pointless. Management did not care said we should have a voiced a concern with the cook. Multiple times a lady we were sitting with got up and spoke with the manager. Not sure if it matters but there was only 1 white person at our table 7 blacks maybe that’s why service was so bad. Not all blacks are rude and looking to get out of paying EVERYONE deserves great service nobody matter the color.
