Haggerty Sum 2 Eat has been on my list of restaurants to try for quite a few months now and I always seem to forget about it whenever it’s time to eat. I can guarantee that won’t happen anymore though.

I met up in the packed parking lot with a close friend of mine and we instantly walked in to see a line that was 10-15 deep. We knew we were in the right place.

I told Omar what I wanted to eat and I grabbed a table. He was about 3 people away from ordering when a young man walked out the kitchen and flipped the open sign over to closed. I instantly knew they were already selling out of food.

Originally I wanted to try the hamburger steak, red beans and rice, loaded mashed potatoes, and collard greens. Although I only got to try 1 of those things on that list, I was still grinnin from ear to ear.

I got 2 fried pork chops, some green beans, fried okra, and a roll. Omar ordered a fried pork chop as well, fried catfish, collard greens, gumbo, and a couple desserts.

Everything we tried and I mean EVERYTHING was incredible. Not a single thing on our plates lacked seasoning or flavor. The pork chops were juicy and tender, while the fish was soft and flaky on the inside, with a nice crunchy batter. The gumbo was on another level in regards to flavor

All the sides seemed like they were made with love. Even the tartar sauce had me feelin right.

I tried a small bite of the yellow cake and the pecan pie. I bout cried. Omar can tell you about that pecan pie haha. It was sooooooo good.

The staff that worked there were all incredibly friendly and welcoming. They told us about what they usually cook on certain days and the best times to get there. I can definitely see why they were packed and why they sold out.

To anyone in the East Texas area that’s reading this post. If you haven’t tried this place, now’s the time!!

The staff was so friendly and I only spent about $20 on a good size portion of food with a drink and dessert, all of which was SO GOOD! 10/10 will definitely be back next time I’m in the area. Definitely one of those little hidden ETX gems ♥️♥️♥️

A Hidden Soul Food Gem—Sum 2 Eat Delivers Excellence on a Styrofoam Plate

From the moment I opened the box, I knew this wasn’t just lunch—it was a statement. Sum 2 Eat isn’t trying to be flashy. It doesn’t have to be. What it does have is a mastery of soul food that would rival any high-end kitchen.

The fried fish? Artfully crisp, seasoned with a deliberate hand that respects the ingredient and the tradition it comes from. Each bite was hot, flaky, and full of bold Southern character—the kind of flavor that doesn’t just satisfy hunger, it tells a story.

The sides—green beans and corn—might seem humble, but here they shine. The green beans are tender without being mushy, tasting like they simmered beside a grandmother’s stove. The corn bursts sweet and buttery with just enough salt to lift it.

There’s nothing pretentious here. Just deeply soulful food, executed with precision and pride. Sum 2 Eat isn’t just a place to grab a bite—it’s where comfort and culinary craft meet.

Highly recommend. And I’ll be back—often

Hands down the friendliest restaurant in Tyler. Everyone greets you with a smile and the place is filled with laughter and good energy. The food is amazing. Everything I’ve eaten there has been excellent. The gumbo is fresh and made with great care to turn out as good as it is. Sweet tea and juices made fresh. Fish was fried to perfection. Definitely worth checking out!

This place has the best food, reminiscent of my grandmother’s from-scratch homemade dishes. They serve a choice of meat or fish entrees with a variety of veggies on the side, topped off by a cornbread muffin or roll. It’s all yummy.
The outside doesn’t look too great, but don’t let that influence your decision. Go in! You won’t be disappointed.
