Only a handful of people can cram inside Suki—and they do, for Kelly Cho’s Japanese-style curries. Cho is a perfectionist, making her own butter for roux.

Chanced upon this spot as we were going somewhere else for lunch down the block and decided to opt for it instead. I saw a painting of No-Face from Spirited Away on one of the walls at the corner of my eye and my inner spirit couldn’t help but be excited after seeing that unexpectedly. This place also had something about it being Michelin posted on the door. I was a little confused, but after coming home and researching, I learned that it was 1-star Michelin Guide restaurant, meaning it was rated for high quality cooking.

According to the Michelin Guide site, the rating is based on a 0-3 star system putting into consideration the quality of food based on (1) quality of ingredients, (2) mastery of flavor/cooking techniques, (3) flavor mastery/cooking technique, (4) personality of chef in the cuisine, and lastly, (5) value for money/consistency between visits.

My party of 4 ordered the Pork Katsu Curry, Yaki Curry, Shrimp Curry Udon, Chicken Salad & Miso Soup.

The Yaki Curry is the baked cheese-covered looking dish. It has rice under and the cheese was an orange-kind, probably cheddar or American? I did feel that it was a bit too cheesy for my preference, but it just being rice under didn’t make it too heavy. The Pork Katsu Curry with rice was good. We opted for a level 2 spice (you can choose between 0-5 I believe it was with 5 being the spiciest). Level 2 was very mild that you could barely taste the spice for reference. The curry is on the side so you can choose to pour however much you want on it. The Shrimp Curry Udon was pretty good. The udon was thick, but smooth in so would recommend.

Overall, it was a decent meal. Not necessarily mind-blowing after seeing the Michelin Guide recognition on the outside, but still a good spot to try out.

Pretty good. More like 3.5 stars.
Yaki Curry: Epitome of comfort food: Meat, Cheese, Rice and Gravy. I ordered low end of spicy and it still had little kick, tasted like togarashi spice. Definitely has truffle oil on top, that’s the yummy umami waft you get when you open the lid. With the cheese it tastes like they were going for as much umami as possible in one dish. There is a lot of carrots in it which makes it taste sweeter as you keep eating, for me I couldn’t finish cause the sweetness was just a touch too much halfway in, but will be amazing leftovers for later. Will be good with some oshinko (pickles).
Kani Salad: imitation crab and cabbage with kupi mayo. Also too sweet, especially when eaten with the curry. Just a squeeze of lemon would make a huge difference. Next time I would order side of chicken katsu instead of salad.
Service was kinda slow, but I was the only customer in between lunch and dinner, so I don’t expect much anyways, it’s a boring time for waitstaff, so I understand.
Meal was not served with any napkins. But I normally travel with a handkerchief ever since I took a trip to Japan, so maybe it’s cultural? No idea, but hey it’s more eco-friendly 🙂 so I’m good with it.

I had a delightful experience at Suki, a Japanese curry spot in Manhattan. The pork katsu curry and Wagyu appetizer were standout dishes among the various options we tried. The restaurant’s ambiance was pleasant, and the service was excellent. Can’t wait to return for another satisfying meal!

We did a take-out order from Suki via Grubhub and the process went smoothly. The staff was friendly, helpful and even finished our order earlier.

We had Beef Curry from the limited options on their menu and the price was average +$1 each dish on Grubhub compared to dine-in. The meal came with a bowl of mini salad but the overall portion was small, so it’s kind of pricy in our opinion.

The curry was flavorful, creamy and perfectly went with rice, which was cooked properly. The mini salad bowl was decent and we loved the sauce so much.

We went on a weekday for lunch, and the place was pretty empty. The curry was delicious – I usually like thicker curry, and it was pretty thick and flavorful. The katsu was cooked perfectly, and the salad was tasty as well. The only thing is that I’d like it even more if there were bigger chunks of vegetables in the curry.

My oh my, this is definitely one of the best spots in the city for Japanese Katsu curry. The katsu is crispy and tender, not at all oily. They also get the curry flavor spot-on, unlike many other places. Great comfort food, and totally hits the spot.

I really wanted to like this place I REALLY wanted to love this place, a female chef, Japanese curry … sounded super promising, right?

The cucumber was too hard the tuna too cold and it was watery and bland. The udon very unexceptional and the chicken katsu? Overcooked and dry. What an incredible disappointment. The room is lovely and d the server polite but this place isn’t it. Japanese cafeteria quality at proper restaurant prices.

Suki on 1st avenue.
Japanese restaurant with Udon, curry katsu.

The good:
– very good udon, cooked very well and consistency is good.
– curry sauce is good, katsu fried well.

The not so good:
– small portions
– slightly overpriced for the portions
– i ordered the shrimp tempura and i couldn’t locate the the shrimp, mostly batter, but it tasted pretty good
– Not a knock on the staff, he was very nice, but on a Friday night, he appeared to be the only person working, and service was slow, i believe we waited 45 minutes before getting our food, again not a knock on the server, we actually felt bad for him and tipped him 20+%.

Overall: a good experience for Japanese Curry, well tasting, minor issues with the portions and the lone server delays, albeit it was on a Friday night.

This is my NYC No.1 Japanese curry space! I have been to Suki for several times while they were at their 1st Ave space and love their curry udon and katsu curry rice. Today I just found they moved to St Marks Pl. I went in and ordered my favorite curry udon. I think they’ve updated the recipe a bit – the curry soup base is thinner with more umami flavor! It’s even better than what I loved before! From the layers of taste, I can definitely tell the effort they’ve made in building this home dish. I have been recommending Suki to others and will keep doing so!

First time here and will come back to try other dishes. They offer 5 level of spicy for all of the curry. I usually like spicy food, so i got level 4. It was kind of hot for me but still enjoyable and very yummy! Service was good, and the place is not too noisy. There’s also big table for larger group of 4-8. And plenty of table for party of 1-2. If you love Japanese curry. Should check out this place!
