Ate here based on mixed reviews, so here’s another one to throw into the bowl.

ATMOSPHERE:
This place is a seafood market as well as a casual restaurant. The inside is freezing cold like a market, but we wanted to sit outdoors regardless because of the view. There’s great views of the bay under a trellised patio. We saw a shrimper at work too. Expect to be busy shooing flies while eating.

FOOD:
Clam Chowder
It’s not New England nor Manhattan style. It’s brownish in color and tastes like clam beef vegetable soup. Good but not what I was expecting.

Shack Attack Po’ Boy
This sandwich is way too big. I don’t think anyone can open their mouth that wide. I ate with a fork and tossed the bread. It contains fried flounder, shrimp, scallops & oysters on a roll spread with marinara sauce and drizzled with an Italian dressing-Tabasco sauce and topped with shredded lettuce, and potato chips on the side. Unfortunately it lacked any sort of flavor or personality.

Large Shrimp
10 or so lightly breaded and deep-fried shrimp and shoestring fries. The breading isn’t your usual thick & frozen breadcrumb variety which was awesome, because I can cook that at home! It came with a mildly spicy & peppery sauce for dipping. This dish is way better than the sandwich.

SERVICE:
You order & pay at the counter and your food is delivered. The guys in there were very patient and helpful.

OVERALL:
Nice views, prices are average, portions are generous. Pass on the sandwiches and stick to the grilled & fried items.

Loved this place while visiting with family! Absolutely delicious & worth the wait. Enjoy your food & watch the sunset over the water on their patio! Definitely a must to visit when in the area & the employees are so lovely!

Stopped here after not being able to get what we needed at O’Neals and what a pleasant surprise! I was disappointed with O’Neals this time around, but in that bad experience, I found this place. Gentleman inside was super nice and patient. I was worried bc sign said fish market but when we went inside there was hardly anything in the cooler. We ordered a half bushel of oysters and waited literally 5 minutes whereas I’ve had to order and wait a day at other fish markets before. Atmosphere was laid back and chill, view of the sound was beautiful. Will need to go back to try lunch soon. Thank you for a pleasant experience 🙂

We’ve been doing takeout from Sugar Shack for a number of years when we’re in Nags Head. The fish is usually fresh and freshly prepared, perfect for a quick takeout dinner.

This year, we were surprised to see an online ordering option which we quickly took advantage of. It was nice to be able to place an order online early in the day for a dinner time pickup, and other than a little confusion about menu options (which necessitated a quick call that easily resolved the confusion), the online ordering was easy.

I arrived at the appointed pick up time, and was immediately told it would be 15 more minutes as they were in the middle of a rush. (The three young men working there were clearly working as fast as they could to fill orders!). In the meantime, I enjoyed checking out the small inside, complete with fresh fish displayed) and a walk around the surrounding dock.

We finally got our order about 20-25 minutes after the requested time. After a five minute drive back to the house, we dug in. The fried entrees in our order were all good, except for an order of fried okra which still had some raw batter. The grilled entrees were okay, but overcooked, ranging from mildly overcooked to nearly inedible. Out of our nine entree orders, all were correct except for one which had an incorrect side.

Overall, this was a disappointing experience from a place we’ve loved over the years. We’ll certainly try again, but I hope for a much better experience.

I was on a steamed seafood mission over our four days in Nags Head for a wedding recovery trip. The food and hospitality at sugar shack topped them all! Our first time trying she crab soup and loved it. The steamed shrimp, clams, and crab were so fresh and satisfying that I wanted the meal to last forever. I’m a sucker for joints that keep it simple and delicious, and it was a huge plus that the folks there were so friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed our banana pudding present 😀 definitely making this a go-to spot for our future trips to Nags Head!

Smallest amount of food I’ve ever seen for a $26 fried combo platter. It was our first time ordering dinner takeout here and I was shocked to see how little they put in the box.

Wife has been coming here for years, this is my second time. Food is always good! Great selection to choose from and always fresh. My wife thinks it’s some of the best tuna around! Crab cake sandwich today for me, nice and meaty. Quick turnaround, but can get busy. Few tables inside and out to eat in or get to go. Lots for fresh seafood and meats you can take home too. Can’t go wrong with the Sugar Shack fish market.

Outstanding dinner! The staff are really friendly and helpful, the food is magnificent. I had the fried shrimp which were cooked perfectly, very fresh local shrimp and only lightly battered. It came with coleslaw and corn on the cob which also was cooked perfectly. Wonderful views out at the marsh. The burger was also very good and cooked just right. We would definitely go back, perhaps to watch the sunset as well! They even have a seafood market where you can buy local fish, shrimp and scallops. The sugar shack came highly recommended and exceeded our expectations!
