Steenbock’s on Orchard is in the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, a vibrant research center on the UW campus, with plant-filled atriums and plenty of space to study or just hang out. Our dining room features sleek, modern decor, and opens to our covered patio through a large folding glass wall–when the weather cooperates. Decent burger and American food. Styles itself as fancier than it is, and didn’t offer a hanger for my sports-coat when I tried to stow it during the meal. Some of the chairs have torn padding.
Pros: one of the few spots in Madison you can get a $2 beer and $7 burger (during happy hour). Also weekly trivia on Wednesday.

Was a little odd that they took a 645 reservation when it says they close by 7 but apparently 7 is when the kitchen closes. Even so they still took our order. Fried curds and pickles were very good…home battered. The smoked pork chop was quite good and had just a hint of smoke flavor. Drinks were good. Service was great.

The food was delicious (described as one of the best curries me and a friend ever had!) Our waiter was an absolute sweetheart, service was quick and easy, I also ordered the lavender lemonade but gulped it down so quickly I didn’t get the chance to get a picture, it was truly delicious. ❤️
The food is simple but worth it, they have happy hour specials and I liked the sleek, fresh look of the restaurant, not too loud and the perfect lunch spot.

When we arrived there were very few customers and quite a few staff, and, while we were seated quickly, we waited well over 10 minutes to even have our water glasses filled. It took another 10 plus minutes for a beer and sangria to be served. No one came to ask how our meals were after we were served. When the waitress did come, we were done and asked for the check immediately. We sat well over ten minutes waiting for the check to be collected, gave up and walked up front to pay ourselves. As a former waitress I go out of my way to make exceptions for waitstaff as I know how hectic it can get when a restaurant is busy, but there was no excuse for this service on a slow Tuesday evening.
The smash burger was good, and my husband enjoyed his club sandwich. Our daughter said the hot chicken sandwich was bland.

Our group of 6 had a great time at Steenbock’s last night. The waitstaff were fun and really made the evening memorable for us! Highly recommend the Happy Hour specials. Thank you so much for a delicious meal, strong work indeed and we will be back soon.

The food was good, the service was attentive, and the atmosphere was conducive to talking. Eight of us were able to enjoy both each other’s company and the fine hospitality that was offered. High end campus dining experience frequented mostly by academics. Low noise level and well spaced tables facilitate conversation. Food is quite good but I’d like to see more vegan and East/South options. Due to the paucity of similar restaurants nearby, many of us eat there quite a lot and would appreciate more variety.

The location, service, and vibe are good, but the food is so-so given the cost. I found the chicken sandwich dry (it would be better unbreaded) and the greens were too salty (even for me). Sorry to give negative feedback, but you should know that I have not had a particularly good or good-value meal here for some time.
