I’ve been to Raton, New Mexico, many times but this was the first time I’d taken the opportunity to visit The Steakout at the Palace. It will NOT be the last!
From the moment we walked in, we were engulfed in an old school wild west environment. Kitty, our hostess, even had a sheriff badge on! Everything seemed original if not restored to 19th century charm. It’s truly delightful!
The menu is vast and varied, with steaks being the center of attention. However, there’s also pasta, burgers, veal, shrimp, and chicken entrees. Steaks, whether ribeye, New York, or filet mignon (bacon-wrapped or not) were priced at $2.50 an ounce for a full dinner including trip to the salad bar. Very reasonable!
I’m getting ahead of myself. The waiter quickly brought out tortilla chips and homemade salsa (with famous New Mexico green chili!), and took our drink order. The Steakout might have the best bar in all of Raton with its long list of signature cocktails. It also has many beers and wines, as well as Coke soft drinks.
The salad bar is add you’d expect, buffet style, with mixed greens, spinach, and many vegetables such as broccoli, cucumbers, and radishes. Other toppings include sunflower seeds, croutons, and blue cheese crumbles. Sadly, the dressings are limited to oil and vinegar or a homemade vinaigrette, but the latter was really tasty!
This is a laid-back restaurant, designed to relax and take in the environment. Sit and talk (no Wi-Fi), enjoy the company of your companions, or make new ones in the bar area (bar seating and tables are available). Everything is cooked fresh! This is NOT going to be fast food!
When the food finally DOES arrive, it’s all delicious! Wow! The steak! It was so juicy and tender! Perfect! The pinto beans really taste “Texas-style” without any sweetness. Very rugged and wonderful! Our vegetable du jour was green beans cooked with bacon. I cannot describe how wonderful the flavor was! Even beer-battered onion rings.. Perfection!
Our cocktails were all flavorful, while also being strong (just $7.50 each, so very affordable).
The service from Roman was delightful. He was attentive to refilling our drinks, including water, as well as being knowledgeable about the menu.
This experience was simply amazing. We can’t WAIT to come back to this incredible journey back in time to this restaurant with exquisite service!

Great food, full bar, and friendly staff in an absolutely gorgeous restored building built in 1896. I look forward to going back, especially in colder weather when the lovely fireplace will no doubt be blazing. A true gem in historic downtown Raton!

Incredibly disappointing food. I got the alfredo, along with three different people at my table. Had absolutely 0 flavor to it. It was also an incredibly small portion for $20, which is incredibly overpriced for basically getting watered down gravy on pasta. One of the people found a hair in the alfredo. I also personally found a hair in the salad from the bar and a hair in the butter in the rolls. Nothing here was good. 6/7 plates were disappointing. Will personally not be back.

The atmosphere is great & the food was fantastic! Chef, Joseph Jiron cooked my salmon to perfection! Tender & flakey with beautiful flavors. The Margarita Chicken my husband had was tender & jumping with amazing flavors! The service was great! This has become one of our favorite restaurants!

I’m from Colorado visiting relatives in Raton and was treated to a great dinner and atmosphere. I travel here often and will definitely go eat dinner there again. The staff was awesome and can’t wait for the hotel on the top 2 floors to open. I suggest for anyone to try it out.

The atmosphere is warm and inviting with a vintage look. The food was great. I had the Fruit di Mare, with scallops, shrimp and mollusks on fettuccine. Delicioso! Katrina is a great waitress as she gave good suggestions. Now to finish off with a chocolate on chocolate cake with coffee, yum yum.

I truly wanted to love this place but….
The service was so odd and slow. We ended up being there for over two hours and not because we were having a dining experience, more because the service was slow and disjointed.
The food was good, my pasta was yummy, shrimp cocktail good, and bacon wrapped scallops were nice. We had to get up and flag someone down because are server was so overwhelmed, and there was not a huge amount of customers.
It will be quite awhile before we try again.

We ate there last night. Staff is untrained. Waitress put her fingers on the rim of the glass inside where mouth touches before filling, and the glass still had manufacturers sticker on the bottom. Menu is too large. Didn’t have the item I wanted – filet mignon – they advertised hand cut steaks – steak – and the place has stake in its name. The waiter was embarrassed for the establishment. Advertised a fantastic salad bar and fresh bread – salad bar had half full canisters, two slices of tomato, bread was not fresh. it was pathetic. It could be a great place if managed well. Felt sorry for the staff.

Bartender Roger, very rude, can hear him cussing at the waitress and taking forever on drink our orders. Not to mention overheard he is collecting 50% of the waitress tips. I have worked in restaurants and never heard of this, which made the atmosphere very uncomfortable and ruined our whole experience other than this the food and waitress very good and pleasant.

Some of the best nachos I have ever eaten. Staff was extremely kind and service was great. I especially enjoyed watching the cook make our food. A definite highlight of the city.
