Steak ‘n Shake, a classic American brand, was founded in 1934 in Normal, Illinois by Gus Belt who pioneered the concept of premium burgers and milkshakes. For over 85 years, the company’s name has been symbolic of its heritage. The word steak stood for steakburger. The term shake stood for hand-dipped milkshakes. Gus was determined to serve his customers the finest burgers and shakes in the business. Today, Steak ‘n Shake remains the better burger leader, serving premium 100% beef steakburgers, hand-dipped milkshakes, thin crispy fries, and more. Steakburgers are made without preservatives or artificial ingredients, topped with fresh produce, and always hand-crafted to order.
Chain known for steakburgers & milkshakes offering a dinerlike space with retro flair.

Below is my review from when I visited on a Wed a few weeks ago. Last Fri, we decided to go again because our last experience was so great. This time was not like last, unfortunately. The food was still good, minus a hair being in my fries. I wanted to say something, but didn’t. We expected to get shakes in the big glasses since we were dining in, and we were handed to go cups at our table. After asking why we got to go cups, the guy said, “we just aren’t doing the glasses right now. Sorry.” My only guess is the employees working this day just didn’t want to clean the glasses. It just wasn’t the same atmosphere at all this time.
Previous review: I haven’t stopped in here for about 10 years. I’ve heard mixed reviews about it. My mother and I decided to check it out.
Our experience was amazing! The place was very clean/organized. Staff was friendly/helpful. The burgers and shakes were absolutely delicious!! I asked for extra pickles on my burger and actually received extra pickles! I asked for extra cherries with my shake and received extra cherries! Most restaurants don’t pay attention or acknowledge those requests. The manager, Christine, brought out our food and was very kind. She is doing a great job with this restaurant! I can’t wait to go back!
That said, we did encounter a very dirty restroom during this visit, which was disappointing. Clean facilities are an important part of the overall experience, so we hope management addresses this soon.
All in all, a much better showing than last year. With a little more attention to cleanliness, this location could really shine.
The crew at Steak ‘n Shake was undeniably enthusiastic and efficient. My burger was a flavorful delight, showcasing the classic charm of the restaurant. However, the dining experience was somewhat marred by a few issues.
The fries, unfortunately, were served cold, a disappointing contrast to the warm, juicy burger. Additionally, the absence of caffeine-free diet drinks was a noticeable omission. The restaurant’s cleanliness was inconsistent, with spotless bathrooms juxtaposed against a dirty dining area. The floors and walls could certainly benefit from a thorough cleaning. While I enjoyed the taste of the fries, the portion size for the “large” order felt underwhelming, especially when compared to the generous kids’ meal fries. I didn’t notice that the staff walked out and delivered everybody’s order to their table but mine. There was no rush in service to explain this.
Despite these drawbacks, the friendly service and tasty burger left a positive impression. With some attention to detail, this Steak ‘n Shake could elevate its overall dining experience. Would I give them another try, absolutely. Who doesn’t have a bad day once in awhile.
My mother and I walk in, no one greeted us, but they looked at us. Had to order at a kiosk, ridiculous. No servers anymore, so that’s sad, we loved the smiling faces. The amount of people that walked out after they asked the cook if they had to use the kiosk and he said yes was just… wow.
The floors were filthy and there wasn’t a single clean table. We sat at a dirty table, but it was cleaner than most there.
No one brings your food to you, they call your name and number (inaudible, I might add) and you have to go up and get it!
Also, we were about to leave and the two cooks were asking where their cigarettes were, like we wanna hear that while we just finished eating. Keep that talk for the back.
The food was good, but it wasn’t even hot, it was almost less than room temp in my opinion. This is the first time we’ve been to a S&S in YEARS and we will NEVER come back.
