Steak ‘n Shake, a classic American brand, was founded in 1934 in Normal, Illinois by Gus Belt who pioneered the concept of premium burgers and milkshakes. For over 85 years, the company’s name has been symbolic of its heritage. The word steak stood for steakburger. The term shake stood for hand-dipped milkshakes. Gus was determined to serve his customers the finest burgers and shakes in the business. Today, Steak ‘n Shake remains the better burger leader, serving premium 100% beef steakburgers, hand-dipped milkshakes, thin crispy fries, and more. Steakburgers are made without preservatives or artificial ingredients, topped with fresh produce, and always hand-crafted to order.
Chain known for steakburgers & milkshakes offering a dinerlike space with retro flair.

I hadn’t been back in at least 2 years, so I was hopeful and excited. The concept of “no servers” is ok. It felt kinda weird that it asks for a tip, when there aren’t servers, I understand someone is preparing your food; but they do that at Panera, McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s etc, and don’t expect a tip.
With that said. The food was made fast. The utensils, cups, napkins, straws…. station was full.
What I was very surprised to see is how deteriorated the seating is. The benches are practically falling apart, the ones I saw all had a tear in the seats on either side. The chairs were not much better.
The place isn’t visibly filthy per say, however when I went to pick up my food tray, the counter felt so greasy that when I took a closer look it absolutely was greasy. They need to clean more often. It doesn’t smell, and like I said it doesn’t look dirty per say, but it feels dirty when you touch the tables and chairs.
The food was great tho.
We got home to find they gave us 3 Frisco melt combos, which were $8.99 each. The 2 rootbeers were just soda water with no rootbeer flavoring, so that went down the sink as it was undrinkable.
I called twice since I’ve been home, only to get a generic answering machine message that does not even say it is Steak and Shake. That’s why i called twice, because I didn’t know for sure if I dialed right since it did not say that. Also, there was no indication my message recorded, so I am not real confident anything will be done to fix this since I can’t see them returning my call. I paid at 1:42 pm. It is now 2:24pm.
We did not drive back there with the wrong food since we were all the way in our home, so we attempted to eat it, and the food was nasty! This Frisco sandwich was on big, super greasy pieces of toast. My fingers looked like I dipped them in cooking oil from holding it. That was the most gross thing ever. So I got billed for $28.86 for three grease laden toast sandwiches and only one of 3 drinks. My bill, had my order been correct, should have been about $22.44. I wear reading glasses, so I did not inspect the receipt when it was handed to me with the food in the drive through, nor did I look in the bag. I didn’t want to hold up the line. I should have because I feel very sick after eating that food.
So the lesson here is don’t worry about holding up that line while you root through your purse for your reading glasses, examine the receipt, then verify what is in the bag is what you ordered, and do not pull away until you unwrap your straw and test the beverage to be sure it is what it should be. With prices so inflated now, orders absolutely must be done correctly! I’m very disappointed.
However, the most recent visit will likely be the last to ANY Steak and Shake.
As soon as you open the door you hear from the cook (who was wearing a red polo, so I’m assuming a shift leader) “I’d like to know who unlocked that damn door.” Well, the store is open, it’s 1pm, why would you NOT have the door unlocked? Just don’t want business?
Then as I’m waiting for my order to get complete (which always takes longer than it should) a customer comes up and (rudely) asks to have her sandwich put in the microwave, which is in no way something a worker should do. No food is to return to the kitchen area, that is a major health board violation. They should’ve just offered to remake her food. At any rate, they did microwave it, for way too long, then the cook again begins cussing and arguing. The customer said to throw it away, but she didn’t leave. Just stayed and continued cussing.
The entire store felt uncomfortable. The workers clearly don’t want to be there, the customers all seemed like they were about to erupt in a gang war. It was not a safe feeling. And the workers seemed to want to instigate further.
The worker’s poor attitude is not isolated to this location. Every S&S I’ve been to is this way. This was exceptional though. And it makes me never want to go again. Which is sad, because I have always loved the food. S&S are all so mismanaged and the business model is beyond terrible. There are basically no interactions between crew and customers, unless there’s a problem, and then it is always an argument.
This store is the worst of the litter and needs to be closed, considering the franchise owner and crew clearly could care less about being there.
Update: this location is now closed. Signs are down and looks like the store is being dismantled. Steak n shake locations are closing everywhere, and, no surprise, this location has finally closed.
