Social Profile:

Steak ‘n Shake, a classic American brand, was founded in 1934 in Normal, Illinois by Gus Belt who pioneered the concept of premium burgers and milkshakes. For over 85 years, the company’s name has been symbolic of its heritage. The word steak stood for steakburger. The term shake stood for hand-dipped milkshakes. Gus was determined to serve his customers the finest burgers and shakes in the business. Today, Steak ‘n Shake remains the better burger leader, serving premium 100% beef steakburgers, hand-dipped milkshakes, thin crispy fries, and more. Steakburgers are made without preservatives or artificial ingredients, topped with fresh produce, and always hand-crafted to order.

I stopped by the Steak ‘n Shake on East Washington Street (Centre East strip mall) for a quick lunch through the drive-thru, and I’m so glad I did. The service was outstanding—fast, friendly, and genuinely upbeat. The person who took my order had such a cheerful voice, it made the whole experience feel welcoming.

And the Beef Tallow Fries™? Absolutely delicious. They were fresh, hot, crispy, and perfectly salted—everything you want in a fry. From ordering to receiving my food, the whole process was much quicker than I expected. A great stop for quality service and crave-worthy fries!

Took away 1 star for service because it was several minutes after 7p when staff started scanning our concert tickets. The New Edition, Toni Braxton and Boys to Men concert was great!! Really enjoyed ourselves!!

I guess it’s my own fault for ignoring the name of the restaurant. We went to Steak ‘n Shake and ordered chili spaghetti and coffee.

The chili was too sweet and pretty sour as well. Extra onions and cheese did not suffice to make the taste less unpleasant. On the other hand, in fairness, the coffee was surprisingly good. Credit where credit is due.

To say that the service was poor would be to inaccurately indicate that there was service. The staff member loudly on his phone as we placed our order on the screen, seemed to indicate that far from an afterthought, service was no thought at all.

The restaurant was clean, the restrooms as well and it still kept a bit of the old school Route 66 diner vibe but eating on plastic plates with plastic silverware? No carafe of oyster crackers and no parmesan cheese at the table? I remember a time when S ‘n S did it better than this (in an elderly, condescending voice )

Pro Tip
You can open your own franchise for $10,000 according to signs posted here and there. I don’t think I would recommend it. This entire chain may not be much longer for the fast food world.

And someone do tell the marketing department that “100% beef tallow” may be healthy but sounds vile.

My first time eating at Steak ‘n Shake in years && my first time coming to this particular location . I don’t know why I ever stopped eating here (probably because they closed the 2 locations on my side of town) . The food was AMAZING !!! Definitely one of the best fast food joints in the city && definitely top 3 burger fast food spots (emphasis on the fast) . After years of eating McDonald’s & Burger King…going to Steak ‘n Shake reminded me just how mediocre and lackluster a bunch of fast food places are . The service was A1 and everything was made fresh . 10/10 would HIGHLY recommend !!!

Food was delicious, atmosphere is definitely not the same anymore. They have self order and you have to get you food as the numbers were called. Glad to see food hasn’t changed much!!

Drive-thru was void of stains or trash, the windows were clear and free of smudges/fingerprints and such. The crew were all friendly, professional and quick with their service which can be difficult to find in the restaurants in that area.

This establishment is filthy. Should have read reviews before we came. Every inch was absolutely disgusting – floors, restroom, tables. Given the rest of the restaurant, I can’t imagine the kitchen is clean. Gross.
