Steak ‘n Shake, a classic American brand, was founded in 1934 in Normal, Illinois by Gus Belt who pioneered the concept of premium burgers and milkshakes. For over 85 years, the company’s name has been symbolic of its heritage. The word steak stood for steakburger. The term shake stood for hand-dipped milkshakes. Gus was determined to serve his customers the finest burgers and shakes in the business. Today, Steak ‘n Shake remains the better burger leader, serving premium 100% beef steakburgers, hand-dipped milkshakes, thin crispy fries, and more. Steakburgers are made without preservatives or artificial ingredients, topped with fresh produce, and always hand-crafted to order.

It is inside the Brown Building on the third story in the dining hall area. The interior is nice and service was good. The food is pretty good, although it can take a little while to get food. The meal shown is their Double Cheeseburger.

Caleb is hands down the most friendly worker here. He’s super helpful, makes conversation, and seems more like a friend than just another worker at a restaurant. Highly recommend talking to him when you’re having a hard day. In addition he’s helped correct my order a few times and I always see him busy. Love this places food, my only complaint is the special milkshakes should also be a meal exchange. Love the late hours, it’s the only place open after 11 on campus.

I’ve never experienced a bad Steak ‘n Shake and to be completely honest I don’t know how you could mess it up this bad. The staff seemed a little nervous, but they were very nice and considerate though all 4 of the items I ordered somehow got messed up in such a bewildering way. The first thing I ordered was a bacon steak burger with no ketchup, no lettuce, no tomato, and Cajun sauce then I ordered a large fry with that same order. The second order was for a regular cheese steak burger with no ketchup and extra pickles with a side of cheese fry. When I got the bacon steak burger it had lettuce, tomato, and ketchup with a meat patty that was about the same thickness as four pieces of your standard printer paper with the Cajun sauce in a small container on the side and a small fry. The second order had no pickles, half of a printer paper patty and a regular fry. I never understood the horrors of eating on campus, but I learned real quick today.

Previous comments are hilarious. The service is neither quick or friendly. Every time I come here the person at the register is rude, incoherent, and decidedly disrespectful. I don’t need the Royal treatment, but I am sick and tired of being treated like trash whenever i’m just trying to order dinner. The food tastes good, and the place is state of the art. However, the employees lack basic people skills and are flat out lazy and hateful on a consistent basis. This isn’t a complaint against a single employee either. Amazingly, everyone who works the register acts the same way. It’s just gotten really old.

The food is good, but it’s desperately understaffed. Orders take a while, and are wrong somewhat frequently. Also ran by the campus’ food provider Aramark, which means ordering food is a hassle, and the menu is limited.

Great food. Love the steak burgers and the thin cut fries. The milkshakes are good to. The service here is a little confusing, my wife and i ordered two Frisco burger combos and two pepsi’s, we were rung up for on Frisco burger combo and 2 pepsi’s, then we were also rung up as only paying two dollars. The young lady had to call over two other people to help her, then when asked about our order she replied we are real cheap. She finally asked in the back and they told her she had only rang up one combo, she replied to us asking if it was ok if they gave us the other sandwich and fries. We also noticed ants crawling all over near the booth we were eating in. Overall I am disappointed with the service and the conditions in this location, especially aince it is on Wetern Carolina University’s campus in one of their dining facilities.

A very nice steak n shake express though the hours could be more of a traditional steak n shake.

So I just ordered. I’m standing at the counter, and an employee in the back says to the guy behind me that he’ll “hook him up, no charge”. I just paid for a $30 order, so you can imagine I’m a bit bent out of shape. The guy is a cook (I’m guessing), with a huge bushy beard, if anyone in management cares to address this issue. I’m sure you’d like to reduce shrink by having your employees not give out free food whoever they would like when you have paying customers in line.

Glad they have places to eat late on WCU campus, but place needs to be better maintained as they need to clean more often. Floors sticky, trash overflowing and tables not cleaned often enough.
