Steak Inn: A Cozy Steakhouse Experience in Shell Knob, MO

Kabobs ($18) were really good, I got the chicken and shrimp combo. I would give them 5 stars.
All dinners come with generous sides including one trip to the salad bar. Give it 4 stars.
Husband got the salmon ($19) which was covered in a yellow, very salty, glaze. Not sure what it was. If you order that dish, suggest asking for that sauce on the side, and request the salmon to be cooked medium. Salmon would be 1 stars as it was served because of the sauce and being overcooked and dry.
They do not have an extensive wine list, mine was served in the original small Barefoot plastic bottle ($6). So just know this when you visit and set your expectations accordingly.
There are NO prices on the menu, but do not hesitate to ask. Their prices are very reasonable and I noted what we paid by each dish above.
Our waitress was not active with checking on us. We saw her a total of 4 times: when she got our drinks, when we ordered, when she brought our food, and when we paid. Another server stopped by and got me a refill when she noticed my empty drink. Which I appreciated… except when she grabbed my straw out of my empty glass and put it in the new glass she brought to the table. Please don’t touch other people’s straws. Ew.
We got mozzarella sticks as an appetizer, but they weren’t fresh tasting: not hot, no “cheese pull”, etc. I ordered the 8oz sirloin and husband got the walleye. The steak was cooked correctly and was great, but my husband had a bad time with his fish. He spent most of his meal pulling bones out of the fish. Luckily he did not swallow any. We brought the issue up with the waitress only to be met with defensiveness ?? Honestly not sure. We were told that “fish have bones” and asked “did we expect there to not be bones in it?” Well it’s a filet fish, so yes, we expected the bones to be removed. She went and told the chef and came back to let us know that the chef said “real fish have real bones in it”. When asked if they filet the fish in house, we were told that no they get the fish frozen. So it’s not even a fresh local catch!
We were highly disappointed in the rather rude way things were handled. We did not ask for compensation, we wanted to bring the issue up because we were worried about someone else choking on a bone. We were immediately met with dismissiveness and even hostility. We are here on vacation, but I wouldn’t recommend this to tourists or locals.
Edit after owner reply: no I have no idea who that is. Again, we are not from here.
Great food. The atmosphere as you come in the door is very dark. The lady that greeted us was nice and led us through a series of steps to a back room that was also dark. The menus were weird because all the prices had black specs stickers over them, and they said that the prices have changed so you just have to ask. I’m not sure why they wouldn’t just change the process instead of putting black stickers over everything. Our waitress offered a couple suggestions and then we ordered. Each meal came with the salad bar which is OK but just bag salad and a few toppings on a bar and another dark room. That was one of the last times we saw the waitress since I got up and got all of us, refills of water and I got up and got refills of tea and napkins for everyone. we saw the waitress probably three times once for my ordered once when she brought the food out and once when she brought the check. Evidently we were supposed to get bread while we’re waiting for a meal which we ended up getting once our meal showed up, so no one really ate the steaks were good, although I ordered medium and someone else ordered medium rare, but their medium rare was more medium well. The kebabs were good and the lake baked potato which wasn’t on the menu was good. More or less a crispy baked potato. I would think if they did a little bit of remodeling, a place would be a lot brighter and probably have a younger crowd, but it felt very dingy and old even though the food was great
Well this one has stood the test of time. This establishment has been open for 48 years and stayed true to the commitment of serving a good steak.
There are no prices on the menu but they treat you fair. I went with a buddy and I had the ribeye, he had the sirloin and we had an appetizer and tea for $77…….not bad! Especially for the quality we received.
The salad bar is absolutely on point, nothing fancy but everything is homemade. Fun old school items like pea salad, onion salad, great potato salad (I assume made from the baked potatoes) and a huge block of cheddar cheese!!!
My fave thing on the salad bar were these toast points that they called “toasties”……..yummy!!!!!
We started out with Portobello Fries which were divine! Super crispy with a hint of cornmeal batter mixed with a traditional batter and fried to perfection.
I ordered my ribeye Medium Rare + and they cooked it exactly the way I like it. I noticed they also cook all their steaks over and open flame in the kitchen. I was curious about the lobster even though I didn’t have it. They serve South African lobster in the middle of the woods in the middle of Missouri. For a Chef like me this just makes me so happy 🙂 South African Lobster tail is deep caught and comes from cold waters which makes it sweet to the taste. No where in Springfield even sells South African tails on the reg……..so cool!!!!! You can get steak and lobster for around $75 there, come on!!!
Don’t be expecting fancy, just expect a solid steak house the way it used to be. They also have bread service which was delicious.
Only thing they don’t have is dessert, but you can’t have it all right???? Lol
The ambiance was superb and our waitress was super friendly and the hostess called most customers by name as they entered.
This is an A+ eatery and really impressed me. Tell me your favorite steak house below and what you order.

I do not see how this place is in business.
we visited November 7th and the worst steak/ service ive had in years.
we waited forever on drinks and our ticket.
steaks were well done/ burned .
after we left we went and had drinks at boondocks and we took our leftovers in there and everyone said they wouldnt eat that . maybe there other food is good, but I woukd not recommend a steak.
for my son and I its was 208.00 but he did order the most expensive item. I dont mind paying whatever if its good food. dont waste your time and money.
It was like a trip back in time. From a giant block of cheese at the salad bar to the big parsley leaf on every plate and bread and butter brought to every table.
Old school!
All four of us had sirloin steak, two of us had 6oz with shrimp, one an 8oz and I had the 11oz.
My steak had an excellent seasoning, tender and was cooked perfect medium, loved it! Two others were suppose to be med but were a tad over cooked and tough, though seasoned well. One was suppose to be med-rare but was overcooked and very tough. You could see it was very tough. The two that had shrimp loved it!
All other sides were good.
One of us ordered coffee, it came out room temperature. She informed the server and was offered a warm up. She said no, it’s cold, I would prefer a new cup. They brought another cup of cold coffee. We told the server that they may have a problem with the coffee maker. They brought a 3rd cup. The cup and the coffee were hot, probably put it in a microwave. Which was fine, better than cold coffee. Lol
Over all it was a decent meal, $20-$25/ person. The place was nice and clean. We sat in a room with a window wall, nice view. Others sat in booths with people constantly standing over them in line for the salad bar. They probably weren’t as comfortable.
One other thing- Steak Inn, like everyone else in this economy has had to raise their prices, understandable. But they had stickers over all the prices in the menu with a note saying ask your server what the prices are. I wasn’t going to have my server stand there while I ask How much is this? How much is this? How about this? These? The sides?
So we just ordered and waited for the suprise! Lol C’mon, I would have rather had a paper menu with prices. How much easier would that have been just to print cheap menus on paper?
Anyway, it was a good meal, at least I had a good steak. I will go with 4 stars, though others at my table may have been stuck with tougher steak, cold coffee and only 3 stars.
Neat place, friendly staff, glad we went.
