State Street Brats was founded in 1989, but its legendary Red Brats can trace their history back to the 1950s, when a local Madison butcher began making them for a restaurant called the Brathaus. State Street Brat’s owners worked at the Brathaus in the ‘70s while going to college, and purchased the recipe shortly thereafter. The recipe remains unchanged all these years later, and these famous brats, which are smoked, split and grilled, are beloved by generations of Madisonians. The Red Brats are made from a mixture of pork and beef (the beef gives them their signature red color), and the White Brats (which are pork-only) have been provided by the legendary Bakalars Sausage Company in La Crosse Wisconsin, since 1989. State Street Brats deals are a great way to enjoy a few drinks at this local and well established bar and grill. The Old fashioned was definitely the hands down favorite at $9 with tasty Luxardo cherries, brandy, orange and bitters. This is available sweet or sour, and recommend sweet as the staff pours with a heavy hand. The pair of Day Drink Transfusions are exclusive at State Street Brats. This canned beverage is a spirited cocktail made with vodka, grape juice, and ginger ale, with lime. At 2 for $12 you can’t go wrong at State Street Brats on a Friday night.

Cheese curds were good last year but idk what they gave me this time.. waiter was honest and said the manager was sick of how long the fryers took to clean.

We don’t care about that just bring back the square cheese curds please.

Chill servers with a positive vibe. Our server John was a cool bro and very attentive.

The quintessential Wisconsin bar experience! The barts are on another level and a must try at least once. The perfectly flame grilled burgers give the brats a good run for their money though! Atmosphere, think college, sports, beer, and whole families just hanging out. It’s not a high-end lounge more like high-end dive bar… in the best ways. It can be extremely crowded and loud so not for everyone in this way. On nice days, an outdoor patio though offers the perfect escape.

No trip to Madison is complete without a meal at State Street Brats. The quintessential UW bar experience. 2 floors, screens everywhere, and an outdoor patio. A great place to watch a game.

So much has stayed the same at State Street over the years, but the upgrades over the past several years are welcomed & noticiable.

My go to is the red brat. And one way that State Street has always stood out is the condiment bar that you can pile the toppings on your brat as much as you’d like. Recommended.
