Reviews
As an avid ramen enthusiast, I’ve had my fair share of brothy, noodley goodness and I fear that whoever conceived the recipe for nearly every single ramen dish at State Street has either been born without taste buds or has simply no earthly knowledge of making Asian food.
We had 9 people in our party. Those who ordered burgers/sandwiches/dessert loved their food. Everyone who ordered ramen (vegetable, pork, and shrimp) felt like they had Covid from the sheer lack of flavor. I even dumped an entire cup of chili oil to try and feel *SOMETHING*. It just tasted like wet noodles. Even the hard boiled egg felt like it was boiled to oblivion.
We did have the Kung Pao brussel sprouts to start which were very tasty, and again the fries were amazing. But please, hear my plea, avoid the ramen like the plague.
Also, not suitable for large parties.
The good:
– Service was very good. Our waitress Bailey, was very nice, helpful, attentive, and friendly.
– Beer – I had a great beer. Local and tasty.
– Atmosphere – bar pub. We like that vibe. Doesn’t affect the food obviously but it’s worth noting it was quiet enough for conversation.
– Salad and burger were good. Not great.
The not so good:
– Brussel sprouts were (we think) boiled. They were overcooked, and soggy, and kind of tasteless. I’d pass on these for sure.
– Fries – had potential but ours were pretty soggy. Our view – it’s pretty hard to screw up fries. A bad sign if you can’t get those to the table hot and crunchy.
– while the salad was good (not great), the chicken was a bit dry and barely luke warm. Also kind of hard to screw up – a plain grilled chicken breast.
The two teenagers next to us each ordered the fries and plate of wings. The wings looked pretty tasty and the plate was generous. It’s possible they were very good. We should have asked.
Our take overall – pass on this place if you’re just passing through Augusta.
The staff were super welcoming, treated us like family, and really made the experience great.
I got a smash burger while my wife got a fancy salmon bowl. Both were extremely filling and perfectly cooked.
The cocktails were perfect, well presented, and delicious.
100% worth the stop if you are anywhere near Augusta. I would 100% go 1hr+ out of the way to come enjoy an evening here.
State Lunch – Augusta, ME • Globally Inspired Gastropub
I visited State Lunch for dinner and was blown away by the creativity and depth of flavor. The meal spanned a range of styles—from ramen to steak to comfort classics—with standout results.
Shio Pork Ramen
A beautifully rich broth topped with house‑made ramen noodles, tender pork‑belly chashu, beansprouts, bamboo, sesame, nori, scallions, and a perfectly half‑cooked egg—each element well balanced and satisfying .
Appetizers & Salad
The Buffalo Cauliflower delivered spicy, crispy bites full of tangy punch. The House French Fries, dressed with garlic, parmesan, and parsley, were addictive . The Panzanella Salad with chicken added a vibrant, refreshing counterpoint—bright flavors, crisp vegetables, and juicy chicken pieces made it a standout shareable.
Mains
The Porcini‑Rubbed Ribeye stood out: deeply savory, earthy crust, and cooked just right—juicy and tender. The Pork & Beef Bolognese was rich and comforting, coated in a luscious, slow‑cooked sauce over pasta, deeply satisfying.
Desserts
Finishing with both chocolate cake and carrot cake was the perfect finale. The chocolate cake was decadent, moist, and deeply chocolatey; the carrot cake—spiced just right with cream‑cheese frosting—felt homemade and comforting.
Service & Atmosphere
The ambience has a hip, industrial‑rustic charm—modern, cozy, and unpretentious. Service was attentive and helpful, allowing us to enjoy a relaxed dinner while sampling many menu highlights .

State Lunch impressed with bold, globally‑inspired dishes—even within a small Maine city setting. Every bite showcased creativity and care, from ramen to ribs to dessert. Great for adventurous diners and foodies looking for big flavors without pretension. Highly recommended!
