Another typical iowa restaurant same decor & menu as everyone else. I made the mistake of ordering a so called cuban sandwich and as u can see in picture it looks nothing like one. The meat was tough I only ate about 2 or 3 bites that’s all I could stomach I paid the bill and went home hungry sat down to a PB&J sandwich that was 10 times better. On the plus side water was at star bar was pretty decent.

Given the scarcity of late-night food options in Des Moines, Star Bar is one of the few places that you can still get a solid meal even when you’re not eating at a healthy hour. We’ve tried just about everything on the menu and everything offer on the menu is exactly as described. One of our favorite dishes on the menu is still the Star Burger. A no nonsense good bacon cheeseburger made with super fresh ingredients for a superb taste. We usually substitute the regular fries for the garlic parmesan fries instead. The beers on tap rotate throughout the year, but we haven’t seen the Spaten Oktoberfest for a while now. Service is solid as others have pointed out and there’s ample parking behind the restaurant.

I went into buy six orders of potstickers. I was told that it was the best potstickers in Des Moines. I went and made my order paid for it and waited. I waited for almost a half hour, and then I was told that of the six potstickers I ordered only one was prepped, and they’re going to prepare the others. And I waited as they came out Slowly, but surely out of the kitchen for a take-out order! By that point, the others had cooled off and I was waiting. Finally I ended up with five of the six and they told me they go back in and get the others ready. I was done. The definition of quality is low variability. You go in with expectations and they’re either met or they’re not. That’s the definition of quality. There is no one checking in following up on orders. I had a kid that I was leaving and not coming back. Things went into high gear. I wish they would’ve gone into high gear and just a normal pace when I ordered.

Food was geat. I ordered the Jambalaya. Excellent flavor, but had to let it sit for a few minutes because it was extremely hot. Only complaint was that there were only 2 pieces of shrimp in the entire bowl. On brightside, they did make up for it with an abundance of anduoille sausage. Not to mention the lemonade was excellent as well.

We had a Christmas party here and while Star Bar itself only got 3 stars for the wobbly tables and chairs, the uppity bartenders and long waits for drinks and food, the last 2 stars were earned by our waiter Tony. This young man was polite, professional, friendly and very attentive. Can’t say enough good things about him. Thank you Tony!
