When we walked in, it is obvious they have a mold issue because the whole place smelled like a hay barn. My son mentioned it smelled like a chicken coop.
Outside of that, everything looked clean, but dated. Im sure the carpet is older than both my teens combined and is probably contributing to the musty smell.
We got there right before the dinner crowd came in. This place appears to appeal to the older seniors, at least while we were there.
Even though there were probably 8 customers, it took forever for us to be seated and then to be waited on. Our assigned waitress disappeared and another one helped us out (she was attentive at least). When our assigned waitress came back, she was not the least bit friendly. We only saw her when she took our order, brought our food, and gave me our check, which I had to hunt her down.
Food-wise, everything was ok. The chicken tenders and buffalo chicken tenders were a hit with my kids and the sides were good. I had the chopped steak.
In Texas, a chopped steak is usually flame broiled/grilled. Here, it was an oven broiled patty, so that took a star off. Now, it was favorable, tender and moist, but the patty was swimming in grease. Im sure they throw them in a pan with hot water to keep them hot. Honestly, I should have gotten the meatloaf as this is what it tastes like, minus the tomato sauce.
The cucumber salad was really delicious and so were the fries and fried okra, but the mashed potatoes were not all that great. Also, proportions were really small.
As I was checking out, a customer was complaining about his to-go order and how his wife was ipset at the extremely small sides proportions.
They pretty much told him to call tomorrow and talk to the manager. After he left, one waitress turned to the other and said, “If she was complaining about the size of the sides, she probably shouldn’t be eating them because she is a glutton.”
Wow!
If you ask for a refill or condiments, it’s like you’re bothering her and don’t expect what you asked for to come quickly. You’ll sit there, looking at your food and wait for a good while. You can’t eat your food because you want the condiments. Today when we walked in, we were ushered straight to a table, however we didn’t get our drinks until at least 15 minutes or so after being seated. Now grant you, it was a little busy, at noon, but it was a lengthy response from her. She had been gone a long time after she took our food order and I needed a refill and never saw her. Then when she did fly by our table to go behind the bar, I asked for a refill holding up my cup and her response was “oh you want your only refill now? “I was unaware that I would be charged for refills, but I let her know I didn’t care, I would pay for any refills needed..
When the food arrived, it was cold. Never had that happen before at Stalveys. Being it was a cold day. You like something warm in your belly well, not today! The other gentleman at our table received the same type of service and treatment, and we really didn’t want to send the food back at that point being she had been so rude to us since we had walked in . Honestly I am not sure that was the waitresses fault being someone else brought the food however maybe she didn’t go and get the food when she was supposed to.
Management needs to take her to the side and let her know that people are noticing. I have a lot of friends and family that go to that establishment and they all have said the same thing about her. Well, now I’m telling them to start writing reviews. Something needs to be done and she needs to act a little kinder, a little sweeter, Instead of acting like she’s been there 30 years and doesn’t want a job. It needs to be said. I’m not one to come on and write reviews very often but someone needs to know.. To say that I would not want to come back is hard, because I really do enjoy the food. However, if I do come back, you can be assured she’s not servicing my table.
The food was good, hot and fresh; the only thing that wasn’t that good (to me) was the cornbread. The staff was friendly. I ordered (2) to go plates: White Fish, Sweet Potatoes, Field Peas, Mac & Cheese, and Green Beans. I’ve passed by Stalvey’s several times and when it’s open the parking lot ALWAYS have a lot of cars there, so that was a sign that they must have good food. This was our first time eating food from here. I plan on going back again. Went back again for the second time. We ordered Fried Chicken, Mashed Potatoes, Collard greens, Cornbread Dressing, Sweet Potatoes, and Rutabagas.
