I had been wanting to try Square Pie Guys for years. My wife and I had the day off together and we ended up in Emeryville for some errands. I decided that we should come and try Detroit style pizza. Street parking was easy to find right out front. We opted to sit outside because it was a nice day in Oakland, but it was like 1pm on a Monday so the streets and shop were pretty dead. The inside of the shop was also a little warm and stuffy from the pizza oven.

After looking over the menu I decided to order the spicy pepperoni and my wife got the ultimate plant with dairy free cheese – see photos. I also got an order of the Szechuan chicken wings – not pictured – and my wife got the chilled bowled salad – also not pictured.

First off the wings were dried fried style and has the crispiest exterior. The seasoning was a mix of salt, white pepper, and sugar; very reminiscent of Wingstop’s fries with the sweet and salty combo. The cilantro lime crema dip that comes with the wings is also fantastic. Although I feel the crema is better with veggie sticks as it overpowers the wings when eaten together. By far the best wings I’ve ever had at a pizza place. Highly recommend.

The salad was delicious as far as salad goes but my only criticism is that it had too much dressing. I feel like they could have dialed it back a little bit. But I did love the gigante beans in the salad; very rare you come across those.

Lastly our pizzas. My spicy pepperoni was fantastic although I wished the bottom crust was a little more crispy and crunchy. The dough was nice and pillowly on top. The pepperoni was super crispy with a little bit of char. My wife loved her ultimate plant and they gave her a good mix of veggies. We both agreed that the pizza could have used a bit more sauce. For those of you who know, vegan cheese is very high in sodium. I felt like her pizza was way saltier than mine, and mine was pretty salty already. Just be aware that after two slices, you’re gonna feel very bloated and dehydrated.

Overall we both loved Square Pie Guys, and are excited to go to the Walnut Creek location later this year – it’s closer to us. It may not be the best Detroit pizza, but it’s definitely good Detroit pizza.

Well…I was picking up a delivery and the atmosphere was nice…the servers were attentive and wondered how the pizzas tasted. As I waited…and waited..they kept assuring me the order would be ready soon. After more time I received the order but the manager gave me a personal pizza. It was delicious, the sauce and ratio of cheese and pepperoni was on point! Check them out! I pick up for delivery often and now I know why! Mmmm mmmm mmmm…yummy!

Didn’t get to try the pizza but snacks and beer I had were great. Didn’t interest with staff too much but overall a good impression on service. Love all the natural lighting and color. Seems welcoming and fun.

Being from Ny, I have very high standards for pizza. I was skeptical about the hype but this place did not disappoint! I had the How Mush-Room and it was phenomena. From the down to the crunch. It was perfect! This is good pizza.

The area has a bit sketchy but the pizza is great. However the pieces also very expensive for a few pieces it’s almost hard to justify the cost over the taste. Overall we still enjoy going here My kids love the pizzas as it’s pretty unique. Make sure you park in a paid parking lot on a secure area.

Great location, with big beautiful doors. Pizza was delicious, very filling. Super pricey, but wha can you expect? Landlords gotta eat. Beer selection was minimal. Parking sucks. Don’t use the pay station, scan the qr code instead. I used the station and no ticket came out, so I paid again.

We were in town for a convention we walked here from the hotel. Easy walk the service was wonderful. They were making small talk, making us laugh. we ended up sending more people there for lunch the next day. We had the pepperoni pizza. Our friends had fries, wings, and pizza. Great flavors, the dipping sauces were great also, and the different drinks you could choose from

The pies were decent, though a bit too doughy and greasy for my taste. They might just not be my style. I ordered the mushroom vegetarian and found the sauce slightly lacking and the toppings a bit sparse. My husband, however, enjoyed his pepperoni pie.
Kale Caesar salad was nice and fresh.

Had a great experience trying out this pizza spot!

Facilities here are clean and well kept. In addition to indoor seating, there are outdoor tables and seating on either side of the entrance, as well as an enclosed back patio area with wooden picnic tables and outdoor heaters.

Service was excellent. Carlisle was up front and took our order. He was helpful when we had questions about some of the menu items, and also in recommending the Ellen Supreme when we were considering a second pizza option.

After placing our order, Carlisle also ensured we were aware of our seating options and helped us find the back patio area and get the outdoor hearer near are table turned on because it was a little chilly. He brought our order to us and checked several times, perfectly, to refill our water, take away empty dishes, and provide us with the bill and to go containers. Thankful for such great service that was well timed and not intrusive!

Food: it’s great! Had the Spicy Pepperoni pizza and had the perfect amount of spice and the sauce and everything was so tasty. Although it is a thick crust pizza, it is crisp and light, not at all heavy. That was a pleasant surprise and should please about any pizza lover—even those who typically favor a thin crust pizza. The Ellen Supreme was also very good and tasty, but a distant second to the Spicy Pepperoni.

Dessert: square cookie. This was good, but a mix up had it come out when it wasn’t fresh from the oven. Very tasty, but would’ve been better fresher from the oven and if it wasn’t offered with some ice cream on top of it. So that ended our meal with slight disappointment.

So glad to have discovered this gem of a place. Sad that there isn’t a branch of this close to home in Southern California because it would do well, but I guess it being far from home gives more incentive for traveling up to the Bay Area—and keeps me eating too much of this pizza!

It’s average pizza. Nothing special. Both the cheesy bread and pizza tasted overcooked. Slightly burnt. Crust and toppings are 7/10. Expensive. Dough is too thick and needs more flavor. Cheese could be better. I don’t regret coming but will not ever go again.
