I am in town from Utah, and I had three nights to eat out, explore the food scene, and try different restaurants. I’m usually really good about trying famous foods from the region when I travel.
The first night, I tried Spicy Masala not because I was really craving Indian food. In fact, the only reason, I chose Spicy Masala was because it was still open when I got into town, it was close to where I was staying, and mainly bc the Chinese place I originally wanted to go is next door but only accepts Venmo.
But yall, stumbling upon Spicy Masala ended up being one of my absolute favorite things that happened to me all trip!!!
The first night, I got the Mango Chicken. It sounded benign and safe to try as someone who likes Indian food, but is also a complete baby when it comes to spice.
It was SO GOOD. It had chunks of mango and cubed chicken with a creamy sauce that made for a PERFECT sweet and savory combo. I was ENCHANTED.
I thought about that mango chicken dish so much the next day that I went back that very same night. I got the Butter Chicken dish that time, just to change it up a little bit… it was DELICIOUS.
Tonight was my last night in Philadelphia. All day I was so convinced I wanted a Philly Cheese Steak. I had talked about it to my friends and family that “damn it, that sounds gross, but I’m gonna try it while I’m here.”
But again, all day I was just craving more Indian food ♀️
It started POURING rain on my journey home from the Met, and I capitulated to give my stomach what it so desired. So tonight I got the Coconut Chicken.
Chicken was moist, the sauce was creamy, and that little hint of coconut… OH BOYY. This was my favorite of the three I tried. I am sitting here in bliss.
I was going to take a picture to post on this review, plus I lowkey wanted to save some for breakfast in the morning since I fly out home early, but I immediately sat down to watch my favorite TV show, told my friend she couldn’t poach any from me tonight, and then proceeded to eat whole tub. :))) I did throw in a picture of some garlic naan (a must try, I’m gonna dream about this naan tonight ya’ll it was so tasty), but I didn’t think get a picture of it fresh!
I also have to ado into this review that the boys working are an absolute hoot. The guy at the front teased me good naturedly for being back so soon, but they were all sweet and were excited that someone could love their food so much enough to come back three nights in a row. They work hustling and working hard to get all the to go orders out, but they were still really kind and took the time to chat with me. It was all extremely endearing.
Anywho, I will definitely be back one day to Philly to come to my new favorite Indian restaurant!

My food came hot and well packaged. I ordered butter chicken with plain naan. The butter chicken had good flavor, but it wasn’t spicy at all and I expected at least a little heat. The naan was fluffy and a good size, but unfortunately, it had a small piece of paper baked into it, so I couldn’t finish it. The meal also came with rice on the side, and the portions were generous with plenty of chicken, enough for leftovers. Overall, though, I wouldn’t order again. The flavors weren’t very memorable, and finding paper in my naan was disappointing.

The overall taste of the food was on point. The owner was a little arrogant at first. It was hard for him to understand exactly what I wanted which I believe is what caused his behavior but attitude changed at the end. I ordered a combination platter. I wished the meats were a bit more equally portioned out. I got two shrimp and two small chunks of beef the rest was chicken parts instead of just breast meat. I personally like my peppers and onions cooked or sautéed not raw. I was expecting more of a yellow basmati rather than white. The garlic bread was very good and fresh. The atmosphere was more of a take spot. The air conditioner was not adequate for the space. It was cooler standing outside. I may return for take out only after I do my research on how to order what like.

Customer service is trash. I placed an order through grubhub. The app immediately stated that Spicy Masala Kitchen will be delivering the order – it never arrived. When I contacted the store guy who answered the phone (allegedly the manager) was rude, dishonest, and uncompromising. He initially stated that grubhub handled the delivery after 10p because that’s when his driver leaves and advised that I call grubhub. After I advised that I’d checked their site regarding delivery when I placed the order, and was confirmed for delivery after 11p , but decided to stick with GH since it was the same price and timeframe, he became hostile and began raising his voice. When I asked what happened to my order, he stated that he’d cancelled it, but there was no cancellation notice on either side. When I called him out on the contradicting stories, he became more rude, yelling for me to call crib hub and he has no drivers after 10p. No offer to correct the issue or anything. Terrible customer service. Mediocre food.

Absolutely loved it! Got the veggie samosas, chicken tikka masala and garlic naan and was not disappointed. The guy who took my order and brought out my food was super nice. The food was hot, just the right amount of spice and overall fantastic. Just two tables for four so small and quaint. Plenty of leftovers for later. Would definitely go back next time I’m in town.

Absolutely fantastic every time. I usually get the lamb vindaloo, baingan bharta, paneer makhani and veggie samosas. The samosas are incredible, and you can’t go wrong with any of the curries, they’re all so good. Plus they actually give you enough rice. 10/10.

Their Kheer was just cooked rice in milk and sugar. How this place is 4.6/5 is beyond my imagination. Last time I ordered a mango lassi, it looked so artificial. I think they also microwave their butter chicken.
