Honey Bee’s up the street from Spencer’s Grill bought it and reopened it after a short closure. Spencer’s was always a favorite breakfast place in Kirkwood and its popularity continues.
A diner breakfast for me always hits the spot. This was my first visit since the switch of ownership and I am glad to say, it is still a quality breakfast at a good price. I went with Breakfast #7. Which is two eggs, meat of choice and one biscuit with gravy. My scrambled eggs were nice and fluffy and the sausage patties had a peppery taste. Of course the main attraction of the breakfast was the biscuit and gravy. It simply was delicious.
Sitting at the counter at the end closest to the grill was like watching a show of the Food Network. I was amazed at how fast and organized the two short-order cooks worked. Seeing them prepare pancakes and crispy hash browns, made me wish I had gone hog wild and ordered them, too. I’ll have to give them a try on the next visit.
My visit was a Saturday morning and there was people waiting for booths and multiple stools together at the counter when I arrived and when I left. Being a single diner, I lucked out and got a seat immediately. If you are dining with friends you may have to wait, so bring your patience.
The service is good and attentive. It’s as if Alice and Mel are taking care of you. I didn’t see a Flo or Vera.

Everything is made from scratch, even their gravy! It’s amazing food at a great price. They even make mickey and Minnie pancakes for the kids. We visited St. Louis for the weekend to see the arch and decided to find a small place to eat before we left and we’re glad we did. The only thing that was lacking was the coffee, their machine probably needs cleaning but for how good the food was I will just get orange juice instead of coffee. This place is a must visit if you go to St. Louis.

First time here and our experience did not match the high reviews. We waited over an hour for our order and saw 2 other tables that arrived after us dine, pay and leave before our food arrived. Spent nearly 2 hours here for a table of 3. Maybe it was an off day for the staff or they were not anticipating a busy Monday due to the holiday. We were so excited to go to an authentic diner too.

The food is really good quality diner food! The vendors are all local – Honey Bee’s, Union Loafers, and local butchers for their meats.
The diner is small but very efficient. Don’t be intimidated by the likely wait… which is totally worth it!
I loved their slinger! The chili on it is 10/10! The pancakes look amazing!

If you don’t eat here, you’re missing out! My husband and I just had the Best breakfast, food and service were phenomenal. If you’re a gravy fan its a 9.5 outta 10. Pumpkin pancakes were killer…. who am I kidding, every bite was so good. Can’t wait for our next trip through to visit again.

Love this little local diner, it brings back so many memories from my childhood. Cozy diner atmosphere and delicious comfort food. We ordered the slammer and swapped out toast for their amazing biscuits. There is usually a packed house but food always comes out super fast and cooked to perfection

Update 2 (11/20/24): First time back under the new ownership. I sat at the bar and was greeted immediately and given a nice cup of coffee. My waitress, whose name I unfortunately forgot, was a pro – super friendly and efficient. I ordered two pancakes and a French toast biscuit, which turned out to be way too much food.
The crispy-edged pancakes are what got me hooked on Spencer’s Grill. I was hopeful that they would be the same under new management. The verdict? Not quite… they have crispy tops at least, but the batter is much thicker so the pancakes themselves are thick and fluffy instead of thin and crispy. They’re not bad if you like that style, but I don’t prefer fluffy pancakes. Not sure if this was an intentional recipe change or not.
The French toast biscuit is $6 and massive. I took it to-go and it was a filling breakfast the next day.
Overall, with excellent service and promising new leadership, I have high hopes for the future of Spencer’s Grill. I just hope that they thin out that pancake batter and get it back to what it looks like in my original picture below.

Update 1 (11/5/23): Brought my wife here for the first time. She got the scrapple and French toast, both of which she really liked. The French toast has a lot of cinnamon, just like she likes. She didn’t like the scrambled eggs since it was folded up like an omelette. I was going to try the pancakes again but I saw someone else’s order and they still didn’t have crispy edges. I got the smashburger. It wasn’t bad but it was thicker than I prefer – not smashed enough. Good flavor though. Overall, we both liked it but I really wish they would fix their pancakes and make them actually crispy again.

Nice little old school diner in the heart of Kirkwood. I got the crispy pancakes and hash browns, both of which were delicious. It’s a pretty small building but I went around noon on a Wednesday and there was plenty of seating. They serve Kaldi’s Coffee which I was excited about, but it tasted old and stale. They also only have International Delight coffee creamer, no half and half. But overall, very tasty food, quick service, and a fun atmosphere.
Edit (10/31/23): I went back again and ordered the same exact thing. They now have actual half-and-half instead of International Delight creamer (yay!), but the pancakes this time weren’t nearly as good. They didn’t have the crispy edges like what made them so great before – they just tasted like basic pancakes you could get anywhere, unfortunately, so I lowered my review to 4 stars. See my pics to compare them from before.
