This was the first place I walked into after a long roadtrip ending in Charleston. It was open mic Thursdays – they’ve been through a few hosts, I hope they stick with their current host Matt. Open mics are a blessing to the community near and at large.
Matt welcomed me, and didn’t alienate me for being new, different, or for talking funny like I do. He even let me adjust my own sound without knowing I run sound professionally. That level of trust made really feel at home.
The food is excellent – so far I’ve gotten the brisket sandwich, chicken wings, and mac & cheese. The meats taste HD if that makes sense – the burnt bits hit my soul.
A great place to stop by. Lots of space for busy nights, even room to dance if the music bumpin, an outdoor sheltered heated smoking area, and chill lighting.
From the name we were expecting some true “Southern Roots” BBQ. I got the pick two (i chose brisket with a side salad and waffle fries), my Fiancé got the pick one (Brisket with Mac and cheese and collard greens). My salad was good and so were the waffle fries. The brisket… had potential. The flavor on the crust was good but a bit too salty, color was there. Brisket is known to be tender but this was not. You had to put some elbow grease into cutting it. It was also a bit dry. Which was a bit disappointing.
My Fiancé had the same issue with the brisket. He said his Mac and Cheese was bland. He said the Collards have potential, flavor was there but couldn’t eat half of it due to all the stems in it (he loves that the collars were not canned but disappointed that the care was not put into prepping them).
The atmosphere was that of a bar, which is fine just not advertised as such. Be prepared for loud football fans at the bar lol. Decor was nice!
As far as service.. out waitress was nice, just felt like we were forgotten because of where we were sitting(by the window near the door entrance on the left side). She focused more on one side and would pass by us often. I never was offered a refill until we were leaving, which is kinda pointless if we are about to leave. My Fiancé was offered a refill only when his glass was on the edge of the table.
Overall wouldn’t come back but was nice to try out. We spent almost as much as we would have at Texas Road House which was a bit insane for the quality.
They may have other items on the menu that maybe good so definitely try it out for yourself!
Good Service
Nice clean good bbq place
The food was good
But side orders are so so
Then it was good
The bbq sauces they provided to the table Ranged from sweet and tangy to hot and spicy and everything in between. All in all was a great place to sit down for dinner and left happy and full. The prices for BBQ were very reasonable and didn’t feel like I was breaking the bank to get some. The one complaint I have is the parking because people like to park down the road to get to the back of the building which turns the two lane into a one lane could cause a bottle neck and issues getting in and out of the restaurant.
Smoked wings- 8 (tasty); homemade ranch dressing- 10
Mac n cheese- 9 (very good and cheesy)
1/2 slab of ribs- 10 (smoked to perfection and extremely tasty)
Pork Belly- 10 (smoked to perfection)
Waffle fries- 10 (best that I’ve tried in awhile)
I’ll be ordering again!!!!
Potato salad, and coleslaw were very bland, but I would definitely go back for the brisket!
The bathrooms are gross.
The dry rub smoked wings were large (but not too large) and the skin is crisped up briefly in the fryer. If you know the deboning trick for the flats it works great, with the bones pulling out cleanly. They came with alabama white sauce and there are 6 additional sauces to choose from at every table, but the dry rub made the sauces unnecessary for me.
For me it’s all about the meat, but I’ll say the wait staff was courteous and attentive. And as we all know, not every premium smokehouse even has wait staff.
Pulled pork sandwich, bland and dry and did not include any sauces, fries included were minimal, soggy and not waffle.
1 meat plate, again a joke side of fries and sauces included were less than 1/2 full.
Wanted to like, but way better BBQ, portions and value around town. Might be better in person.
