If you’re on the hunt for an extraordinary pizza experience, South Shore Ovenworks is a must-visit. Tucked away next to the Beverly Shores South Shore station in a charmingly restored Studebaker, this roadside gem offers a culinary adventure that’s as unique as its setting. The standout for me was the “Goomba” pizza, a true celebration of mushrooms paired ingeniously with fresh rosemary and a sublime garlic confit. This isn’t just pizza; it’s a gourmet masterpiece, wood-fired to perfection with flavors that dance delightfully on your palate.

The day we visited turned out to be even more special—it was Jim, the owner’s birthday. We had heard a little insider tip: a birthday wish might just yield a sweet surprise. Inspired, we penned a birthday haiku for Jim:

“On his special day,
pepperoni dances round!
Jim’s art feeds our soul.”

Jim was visibly touched by our gesture, and in return, we were treated to a tiramisu. Just like their pizzas, the tiramisu was a revelation—richly flavored yet perfectly balanced, not overly sweet, ending our meal on a high note.

For the perfect pairing, I recommend grabbing a drink from the neighboring shop to complement your meal. This little interaction between businesses enriches the community feel of the place.

Overall, South Shore Ovenworks isn’t just about food; it’s about the experience. From the unique ambiance of dining roadside (or grabbing a pie to go) to the exceptional dishes and warm hospitality, everything about this place makes it a standout. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, make sure to stop by—you won’t be disappointed.

Pizza was amazing! Dough, sauce, cheese, all perfectly balanced. I highly recommend to get a beer from the store next door and enjoy it on the spot!

The pizza was superb. The staff could have been friendlier. Maybe they were having an off day though. I’m definitely going back when I’m in the area! Heads up: it’s cash only!

Very enjoyable interaction with
the “Front-of-The-House” staff
-aka-“The Pizzaiolo”- a great way to enjoy lunch along the Indiana Dunes shoreline.
Great combinations- by tweaking- and adding either fresh garlic to the Prosciutto Pizza-&-Sausage to the fresh Spinach pizza per my Pizzaiolo’s reccd.
I seem to recall a more shady spot in prior years, under some trees, and that woulda been a nicer “Dining Experience”- IMHO.

The toppings on the 2 pizzas
we sampled were savory & well-balanced,
I’d a preferred
a thinner, crispier, bubbled crust,
similar to
Spacca Napoli’s pizzas in
Chicago’s Ravenswood ‘hood.

There are plenty of tasty pizza’s for vegetarian or Plant-based folks.
Clearly, a winner.

Very cool and efficient set up. Plenty of options for you to choose. We shared a pizza but after the first bite I wish I had gotten my own because I wanted to finish the whole thing. It was so good. I rarely camp at the same place twice so that means I will just need another pie before we head back to the Mitten!

Located in the parking lot of Hobgoblin you’ll find an old truck with a wood fire pizza oven built into it. Don’t drive by, stop and enjoy!

Creative pizzas like dragons breathe, which communicated pepperoni pizza, garlic, and habanero. Or try the maple bourbon peach with chunks of bacon (more like pork belly).

Just picked up a Margherita pizza. I was surprised it was ready so quickly. Worst pizza ever. I think maybe they cooked it earlier and simply microwaved it?
