My parents took me to this place for a lunch and I was pleasantly surprised. I knew from what they had told me the food was going to be good but, WOW! I could not believe the catfish meal. Now understand this wasn’t a place that just fried up a ton of catfish and served it until you got your fill, but 1 large catfish filet excellently prepared true foodies know what I mean…. my mother had the Chicken/steak and cheese and that was an explosion of flavors that way beyond my expectations for chicken. Great Job, I will be back.

We enjoyed our meal here. Like everywhere they are extremely short staffed in the serving department. Only one waitress was taking orders while two sat at the bar and watched (I think she was new) the one working was having trouble with a table of three plus baby. We sat patiently waiting for our turn. I was still amazed that they didn’t help her out or even ask if we would like to order an appetizer to get us started. The service was the worst part of our experience. The food was good, but a little pricey. $25 for the Loaded Brisket Burger was a bit much with packaged potato salad. The fries were frozen crinkled style (they were good). We finally order our appetizer (Loaded Crab Fries). The dip on top of the fries was great. The amount of dip to fries was lacking. There was more dip than fries. Eating spoonfuls of dip was ok, just wished for more fries or chips ($13.00). I think if there was a bit more management providing direction our experience would have been better and I would have know problems paying $25.00 for a burger with some brisket added with store bought potato salad. We might give it a try and hope it was just a one off day for them.

We got the shareable crab and artichoke dip over fries – delicious ! We also ordered the shrimp po boy, and the grilled shrimp basket. For the amount we paid I would’ve liked to see a few more shrimp on the basket, however all items ordered had great flavor. Service was good – no complaints. Would definitely go back. Kid friendly options as well.

Beautifully decorated low key spot to get delicious soul food. I’m talking SLAAAAMMING homemade recipes. Docs barbecue sauce is a must try, go ahead and take a bottle home with ya. As soon as I saw the menu, I knew I’d be back until I had ordered every dish they offer. Prices are more than reasonable for the size and quality of the meals. Everyone I encountered here was helpful and pleasant. I look forward to the many more stops we will be making here. Don’t miss out on your chance to dine here!!

I’ll give them a 4.5 star really. I ordered the buffalo chicken salad which was very delicious. The chicken for the most part was nice and tender and all were thoroughly coated with the buffalo sauce. The portion size for that was pretty good. My companion ordered the pulled pork Mac and cheese. It was good but a tad bit smaller than anticipated. Tried to order a beer but it has sold out or the menu wasn’t updated. Not sure which. Place is kept clean.

On the way home and stopped by for lunch. When we arrived, only the chef in the kitchen and one person working, front of house. I was sure we’d be waiting a while to get our food. I was happily wrong. Service was fantastic and the food was fast and good. As a vegetarian, it’s always nice to see options that don’t seem like after thoughts. I had the black bean wrap. It was so good. Hubby had ribs. They were so good he had a second order

Soul Mountain Restaurant in Front Royal is an intriguing place, much like a captivating novel that keeps you turning the pages, albeit with a few frustrating pauses.

The food here sings a melody of flavors, hitting all the right notes. It’s clear that whoever is conducting the symphony in the kitchen knows their music well. However, the tempo of this culinary orchestra seems a bit off. We were left drumming our fingers on the table for a while, eagerly awaiting the arrival of our order. And when the food finally graced our table, it was like a lukewarm applause, lacking the warmth of a standing ovation we had anticipated.

On the brighter side, our server was a ray of sunshine in the restaurant’s cloudy service. Her sparkling attitude was a sweet dessert to the somewhat undercooked main course of our experience.

What really stood out though, was their focus on drinks. They seemed to pour more heart into their cocktails than their entrees, as if the main course was just an opening act for the star performer.

Overall, if you’ve got time on your hands and a thirst to quench, Soul Mountain could be your Everest. But if it’s a hearty, hot meal you’re after, you might want to set your compass elsewhere.

This is a really cool, fun place. Food and drinks were delicious. Loved the fish taco! Great crab cakes too. Howard took care of us, and made us feel comfortable and welcomed. Festive decore, barrier-free, plenty of parking. We were a party of four and everyone enjoyed their food. Will definitely return!

A Hidden Gem with Food and Hospitality That Feels Like Home

Can’t stop eating here! From the moment we walked into Soul Mountain, we felt like family. Howard, the incredible host, welcomed us with such warmth that we instantly knew we had found something special. And then there’s Chef Gary Kearney, whose soul food is nothing short of spectacular—every bite bursting with layers of flavor that live up to the restaurant’s name.

Every single dish we tried was better than the last, making it impossible not to come back night after night during our weeklong vacation. The crab cakes—especially anything covered in Doc’s barbecue sauce—are an absolute must. Brisket and ribs are soo tender. Shrimp was perfectly cooked!! The coconut rice and salmon were so fresh and also perfectly cooked, a true testament to the care and skill put into every meal.

Don’t let the humble exterior fool you—inside, you’ll find great people, a great menu, and a dining experience that feels like home. Soul Mountain isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a place where food and hospitality come together in the best way possible. We left with full stomachs and even fuller hearts, already planning our next visit…

We searched Google for a restaurant in Front Royal and Soul Mountain had some great reviews. They definitely live up to the reviews!! The service was excellent and all the staff were so friendly. We ordered the recommended dishes and were so happy with our meals. 1/2 rack ribs with Mac and cheese and pulled pork with Mac and cheese. The sauce was wonderful and ribs fell off the bone. Highly recommend stopping here for a great meal!
