Today was my first time eating at Soul Food Joint. The food and the service were Amazing. I order ribs, mac & cheese, candy yams & cornbread. The ribs were so tender the rib bone fell right off the meat. Mac and Cheese mouth watering, flavorful & melt in your mouth. Candy yam sweet like sweet potato pie filling. Last but not least cornbread tastes like moist pound cake. If you haven’t went please go support this amazing business and enjoy a Spuld food adventure ❤️❤️❤️

REVISED – 3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ I had to come back and revise this review due to the hours, being extremely inconsistent on two occasions I tried to visit this business during the hours which they state they were open, and they were closed such a tragedy.

Yes I took a lil nibble before taking the pic, sue me!

The fish- mine was fried extra hard and it was just that; super crispy. Unfortunately I thought it was a tad bit salty but I’m not a fan of salt on anything. My daughter on the other had said it was not too salty.

Potato salad and greens- both did not taste homemade

Mac and Cheese – this is definitely homemade. I will say it’s a solid Mac.

I believe the guy who served me was the owner and he was super sweet throughout my whole time there. Bottom line would I go back, yes. Should you go, yes.

The owner and his coworker get 10+ stars! Unfortunately, they are never open despite their hours stating differently. In fact, I drive past the establishment nearly every day and night of the week, and it always gives the appearance of not even being in business, always dark inside and few to no cars around. I managed to find them open only once months ago. A plethora of negative stars for this.

As for the food, if you love a few greens or mac and cheese with your salt, then this place is for you. Servings were bountiful with so much salt one could float on top. The ubiquitous amount of salt literally prevented me from tasting the actual food product. However, the fish was very good with a bit too much salt for my taste, though nowhere near as salty as the side dishes I had. The cornbread was good and super sweet, making it taste more like a dessert than something one might want in his or her bowl of brown beans. Not complaining, I love dessert!

If this place were open during hours advertised, and salt was cut back a wee bit when cooking, this could be a wonderful place to go with such genuine, happy people working here.

Very small restaurant. We did enjoy the music like 70-90’s R&B. The music was really loud but the owner respected our request to turn it down some. Our table was not clean or the floors. I kicked some food to the side that was there before we sat down. We see so much potential for the place!

The table was wobbly. Nice spot for open mic. The owner was very friendly! He was working alone it seemed. It was nice finding out the history behind the restaurant. We wish them the best! Make soul food proud! You have a gem and your place can be on the map.

Food: the fried deviled eggs were too salty! Like someone took the top off the salt shaker and it all came out.
The Mac n cheese was good but some of the cheese was dark and not melted all the way.
The fish was good but I had to ask for sauce. I requested tarter sauce. For 3 huge pieces I was given one sauce. The potato salad was good but way too many onions! It overpowered the salad. Certain parts of the fish was salty as well.

Thr cornbread was sweet not overly sweet. But also dry. My dad/myself we make cornbread that is moist (tastes like cake). Our suggestion: have melted butter at the bottom of your pan then add your mixture. That’s a game changer. No cornbread should be dry.

Our other dinner: The collards were on point 100%. The baby back ribs weren’t really baby back ribs. It was huge dry ribs. Seasoned good, but they were not fall off the bone ribs (he said they were). I tried some and it was tough, not tender, and some parts you couldn’t eat. Same for this meal w dry cornbread. We both agreed on that.

The yam they said was good but butter would have been nice to add with that and the cornbread. We walked out paying $56-59. Sad bc we don’t see ourselves returning. We enjoyed eating a meal together. But agreed there was nothing exceptional that would make us return.

They need a menu that is printed up nice and laminated. That looks more professional vs a 8×10 black and white print out. Update table decorations. We hope those things change for the future and we may return.

We had the family Meal. The chicken is cut up In front of you from a whole chicken. Just seeing that kind of effort alone is unbelievable, most buy precut sections and serve it to customers but not here. Here they make everything fresh right after it’s ordered. The deep fried deviled eggs are a unique twist on a fan favorite. The fried fish was amazing, the cornbread had a hint of nutmeg or cinnamon. The candy yam is probably the only thing I couldn’t get in board with. It had that southern clove taste that I’ve just never been a fan of.

Stopped by here for dinner while in town for a meeting It’s a small family owned soul food restaurant. We were greeted with very warm and friendly service and absolutely fantastic food! Having grown up on soul food, I alway enjoy finding a good soul food joint, and this is one of the best! My wife had the ribs, with collard greens and deviled eggs. I had the fried chicken, with potato salad and collard greens. EVERYTHING wso good! The potato salad reminded me of my mother’s! It was a bit salty but, hey, it soul food after all! sPlease show this business your support. You wont be disappointed!

My first time here. Lunch. I ordered the Soul Platter with fried chicken, coleslaw, corn bread and deviled eggs. Talk about home cooking! Every single item is delicious — the chicken is cooked perfectly, the cornbread has a sweetness with (dare I say) a drop of vanilla! What a treat. The deviled eggs are a tasty mayonnaise/mustard with light herbs.
I will be back again, and again!
There is a family dinner for four on the menu.
The proprietor, Shaun, was professional, friendly, and brought my food quickly. The restaurant is spotlessly clean. Cool reggae music playing.
I recommend it! Come eat at this place!

If you are looking for delicious comfort food, this is the place to go. Between my husband, my son, and myself, we had the ribs, pulled pork, collard greens, candied yams, mac and cheese, friend chicken, with deviled eggs and corn bread for appetizers. The entire meal was incredible. The service was great too. Friendly, informative, and prompt. Go to the Soul Food Joint, you will not be disappointed.
If you want to read my more detailed report:
They have 15 types of devilled eggs, how cool is that? We tried two versions, and they were both soooo good.
The ribs were the best I’ve ever had–and I’ve had a lot of ribs. The sauce was amazing and the meat fell off the bone.
The pulled pork was delicious. They didn’t drench it in sauce like so many places I’ve been to do. They drizzled sauce over it and gave you some on the side if you wanted more–I appreciated that.
The collard greens were so good. Tender, full of flavor, but not any one spice overwhelming the rest (many collard greens I’ve experienced are super heavy on things like vinegar. Not these though).
The candied yams–oh how I could go on about the candied yams. So good. Sweet, but with such a wonderful depth to them. I don’t know how they make these, but they need to just keep doing what they’re doing because they’ve got it down spot on.
My 3 year old had the fried chicken and mac and cheese. He gobbled down both. It was so nice to have homemade mac and cheese with real cheese.
So in conclusion, I loved this place. So did my husband and son. We will be back many more times to enjoy this wonderful food.

10/10 unmatched. Came in on a Friday night was immediately greeted and enthusiastically served. Genuinely feels as though they care about the food they serve. Was given unexpected appetizers that did NOT disappoint. Growing up in the south I know a thing or two about good home cooked meals and this is incomparable. If you’re ever in the Charlottesville area looking for a good home cooked southern meal and good hospitality- highly recommend and encourage you to dine in and don’t forget to ask about the fried deviled eggs
