Very long wait for dinner on a Sunday, but good service once we were seated.

Spring rolls to start were good – standard flavor with the right amount of oiliness. For sushi we had a shrimp tempura roll, Erica roll, fresh salmon roll, and a Rosie roll with cream cheese instead of avocado.

All sushi was good. I dipped the shrimp tempura roll in teriyaki sauce – without it I’m not sure I would have liked it as much. The Erica roll has too many crunchies for my liking, but it wasn’t bad, just won’t get it again. Both the fresh salmon roll and Rosie roll were good – salmon was seemingly of nice quality.

We will avoid dinner time most likely to avoid the wait, but we would come back at another time or for takeout.

I really enjoy coming to this Japanese restaurant. I come here almost every 1–2 weeks when I’m not feeling lazy, even though it’s about a 50-minute drive.
The food is consistently delicious, and the prices are very reasonable for the quality. Every time I visit—usually on weekends—the restaurant is always busy, which really shows how popular it is. Despite that, the staff are efficient and the service is fast, so the wait time is never too long.
Definitely one of my favorite Japanese restaurants and well worth the drive.

I’ve lived all over and eaten a lot of sushi… including some of the best spots in San Francisco, Palo Alto, New York, Brooklyn, Paris, and London. Sonobana stands shoulder to shoulder with them. It is hands down one of the best Japanese sushi restaurants I’ve ever been to.

When I moved back to Nashville during COVID, I remembered Sonobana from years ago and decided to try it again. It completely exceeded my expectations. The fish is incredibly fresh, the quality is consistent, and everything is prepared with care. The service is outstanding, too.

They recently remodeled the interior, and while it used to have more of a hole-in-the-wall feel (which I didn’t mind), it’s now cozy and comfortable. It may not be the fanciest “special occasion” spot in town – but that’s not the point. The food is amazing, the team is wonderful, and the prices are incredibly reasonable for the level of quality you’re getting.

If you live in Nashville and haven’t eaten at Sonobana, you’re missing out.

First time visiting, and certainly not the last. I stopped in to try the beef Sukiyaki because I wanted a hot bowl of soup and also wanted gyudon so it was the obvious choice. It was one of the best bowls of food I have ever had. Maybe it’s because it’s been so long since I’ve had it, maybe the cold weather made it hit a little harder, and maybe I was a little excited to try a new place I’ve heard so much about, but if a bowl of food could be described as cozy then this is it. The hot skillet it is delivered in kept every bite warm and fresh. The broth was packed with umami flavor, the tofu stayed firm in the soup and added a great bouncy texture, and the veggies were cooked perfectly. Admittedly, the beef was overcooked, but everything else was so perfect I just didn’t care. Bottom line was it made me happy, and I couldn’t stop eating it. I’ll be back the next week for the udon. Gochisousama deshita!

This restaurant has been a Nashville staple for nearly 40 years, and I’ve been a customer for at least 20 of them.
It remains, hands down, the best Japanese restaurant in the city.

The food is consistently excellent, portions are generous, and prices stay fair and reasonable—something increasingly rare these days.

In a town overrun with flashy, overpriced ‘trendy’ spots, it’s unusual to find a true family-run restaurant that prioritizes quality and tradition over hype. If you’re looking for authentic Japanese food without the pretentious BS this is the place for you.

Very much enjoyed my meal! The service was prompt and friendly and the wait (10 min) was well worth it! The sushi was fresh and delicious! The menu is quite overwhelming with a lack of photos of sushi, but the two pager that accompanies is helpful! Limited drink choices, but who is going here for the drinks anyway?? Excellent sushi; sushi so good I felt like I was undercharged. The wasabi didn’t disappoint either!

The brief wait, due to popularity, was mitigated by nearby attractions like the Sonobana store next door and Trader Joe’s. Once seated, every culinary delight surprised, especially the exceptional sushi, which was pristine, bursting with flavor, and top-grade. Highly endorsed for sushi connoisseurs, and I am eager to return.

This was a disappointment. I had been reading how this place was the best spot for Japanese
food in Nashville, and yet it was a let down. The food was lackluster from all the other Japanese food I’ve gotten, from the states or Japan itself. I was expecting much more from the reviews, however there were many things lacking. My husband and I ordered two different bento boxes, and the tempura seemed to be undercooked in both. It simply wasn’t crunchy. The ‘California roll’ we received had maybe a sliver of krab? It was mostly runny avocado, which was a huge disappointment. The best aspects of the meal were the miso soup and fermented bean sprouts. Although the salmon and eel were delicious, the portions were so small and didn’t make up for the rest of the meal. The service was friendly, and I’m sure there are things that will shine on the menu, however, for what they are charging, it just simply isn’t worth getting dud after dud to receive something that is slightly satisfactory. Despite this, the market has some interesting finds and is worth visiting if you need some Japanese ingredients.

Despite the wait time (30min-1hr) to get seated the food here is delicious, despite the long wait time to order, the food is amazing, and despite the crowded entrance and really small place, the food tasted fresh like no other restaurant in the Nashville area.
Must say, I’ve been here only twice in the past 3 years and I’m not sure why is that, I should change that lol
Regardless of what you think about the place because of how aged it looks, the food will not disappoint I promise you that.
Make a reservation ahead of time and if you’re walking in know that there’s always going to be wait time ranging from 15 minutes to 1 hour or on busy days even more but the wait is worth it.
