Context:
On day two of a 20 hour road trip we decided to stop somewhere for a quick bite where we could also get a treat for our two little boys and then jump back on the freeway.
Experience:
When ordering, we tried to get a plain hot dog, but were told that we could only order it from the app. Weird, but not insurmountable. Our toddler is pretty good at pulling the breading off of a corn dog. When we finished ordering the young man didn’t say anything. He just disappeared and the total appeared on the screen and we paid.
Then we waited.
And waited.
And waited.
And got out to go to the bathroom. The bathroom was dirtier than a sailor’s mouth. But when your kid is newly potty trained, you don’t have the luxury of waiting for the next bathroom.
Then we went back to the car and waited some more.
Receipt is time stamped at 1:30 and we didn’t get our food until 2:04.
Carhop walked out and didn’t say a word to us. Handed us our shakes and drinks, a bag of food, and disappeared. (I’m sure that she wasn’t having a good day because we probably weren’t the only unhappy customers.) She didn’t even respond when my wife thanked her and said “have a nice day.”
Food:
I’ve attached a picture of our receipt and will go down the list.
Crispy chicken sandwich was cold, soggy, burned bun, and had tomatoes on it.
Med. Onion rings were cold and soggy. One was even raw on one side and burned on the other. Wouldn’t have been much of an issue if they were fresh though.
Med. Dr. Pepper never made it to the car, but we weren’t about to turn around for it.
2 Corn Dogs came out alright. Usually they are hotter and our boys have to wait for them to cool down, but this time they were able to eat them right away. This was a positive for us since they had already been waiting for over 30 minutes after we told them they were going to get a corn dog.
Raspberry slush was pink water with a thin layer of ice shavings on top. My toddler didn’t even want it and it’s supposed to be frozen sugar water… That speaks for itself.
Vanilla slush was also disgusting. Very little flavoring and we’re not entirely sure that it was even vanilla. It was also light on slush and our oldest was dissatisfied, not even finishing it.
Chocolate shake with banana and peanut butter. This was almost right. They put in hot fudge instead of chocolate which was fine by me, but it was also soup by the time they brought it out. So now I had a sugary drink with the occasional chunk of banana instead of a thick, ice cream shake.
Hot fudge shake with peanut butter was actually just a peanut butter shake without any chocolate. But it was the only thing in our entire order that was fresh.
So of the $22.83 we spent on food, we enjoyed $2.98 of it. Needless to say, this particular location has been blacklisted for our future road trips.
The thing that has me the most puzzled is that we waited for over 30 minutes to get our food and hot food was cold and frozen food was melted. How long was it just sitting in there? What is going on in the kitchen that they can’t complete an order at the same time? I don’t know if they were short-staffed or whether they just need some more training, but there are obviously some management issues here, not just food quality. It makes me wonder whether Sonic should consider pulling the franchise rights.
