Like the Red Viking nearby, Solvang Restaurant serves a hodge-podge of American diner fare and Scandinavian specialties, the latter of which I enjoy far more than the former. Thus, even though it was mid-morning, I waited out the clock until 11am, so I could order off the lunch/dinner menu, and score myself the combo plate of meatballs, sausage, mashed taters, and assorted veggies. My wife went with the open-faced sandwich plate, which was more of a DIY affair than a true sandwich.

Our entire order came out far faster than expected, hot and fresh (or cold and fresh, in my wife’s case). Simple. Modest. Delicious. Put a sausage, meatball, mashed potatoes, or all three in front of me, and you know I am going to be a happy camper! Regretfully, I forget to order a small batch of Aebelskivers to go, as I had intended; I can’t even remember the last time I had one, and now I am kicking myself for forgetting them! I guess now I have another reason to return to Solvang!

Like its name, the food here at Solvang Restaurant isn’t particularly creative or fancy: it’s just simple, ol’ fashioned home cookin’, made with love, like it came out of your grandma’s kitchen, and that all by itself makes it something special. A meal here feels a little bit like coming home for the holidays. If nostalgia has a flavor, then they are serving it up here in spades. Don’t miss out!

We came to the Solvang restaurant for lunch while exploring Solvang. Great little restaurant with family friendly atmosphere, great food, and customer service. Would highly recommend coming here if you are visiting Solvang.

Very cute inside. To be honest I thought the sour dough toast was better than the pancake things they service. But it was very delicious and fresh. We would come back.

Stopped in to try their famous Aebleskiver’s and they did not disappoint. They came out fast and fresh. Like little pancake balls with powdered sugar and raspberry jam. Nice to have dessert first sometimes.

Shared a plate of meatballs with potatoes and gravy, veggies, and soup or salad.

The menu has quite a variety.

The service was friendly. Like a local family vibe.

Plenty of parking nearby.

The location was very clean.

Spacious, cozy restaurant with laidback diner vibes. The food was very good and for the most part service was great. The food is affordable and quick to come out, and the coffee was pretty fresh.

“*Delayed post from Dec ’24.

Visited here during Lillejuleaften (Little Christmas Eve on 12/23) to enjoy the holiday atmosphere. This restaurant had great décor to keep your eyes constantly entertained, from wood carvings on the booths to miniature homes of all styles along the ceiling’s border and Danish sayings painted on the wood beams. They even have a miniature store at the front where you can buy jams and flour to make your own Aebelskiver at home.

It was extremely crowded when we arrived, as expected given the holiday, but thankfully we were seated immediately because we opted for the bar instead of a table. While our servers were doing their best, it was obvious they were running very behind. They didn’t have any utensils for us to use and it took a very long time to get our food. We watched as plates were assembled behind the counter in front of us, then popped into the microwave to be reheated. Not the most appetizing site, but to be honest, our orders were still delicious.

We ordered the Danish meatball and Danish sausage plates, both of which came with red cabbage and mashed potatoes with gravy. The meatballs also came with steamed vegetables, which were the only things I didn’t quite care for as they were mushy and lacked proper seasoning. The other items were great in flavor and texture, except the chicken sausage was drier than the others, most likely because the fat content was lower than say the pork link. The mustard dipping sauce was tasty and helped moisten the chicken sausage.

The famous Aebelskiver was definitely worth stopping in, but with 3 large dough balls, it’s just too much for 2 people to eat comfortably after a full meal. I’d recommend skipping the ice cream if you find yourself in this situation. Otherwise, you can line up at the outdoor pick up window to just order Aebelskiver and skip waiting for a table altogether. It reminded my of a funnel cake ball stuffed with raspberry jam. Delicious!”

The restaurant was packed…it took 30 min for us to finally get the seat. The to-go line was horrible as well…
Tried the veggie sandwich – it said sour dough bread but sour dough bread was horrible, felt stale. Fries were good.
Got the Danish combination plate as well – had a sausage, mashed potatoes, Cauliflower (was good) and meatball (not good), boiled veggies and soup (was good).
Also got the Abel-skiver sweet dish with ice cream – was okay as well.
Vibe was good, service was ok.

Fun place for food. Very much American diner with a hint of dutch. Most of the items on the menu are recognizable to the average eater and done very well.

We got a croissant sandwich with dutch sausage and a patty melt. Both were very good American classics. We also got some of the Aebelskivers (think of them as spherical pancakes). They were very good. They went especially well with the powdered sugar and jam.

Overall great place to visit is Solvang, true classic.

Solvang Restaurant is breakfast spot that makes the popular Æbleskiver, a danish spherical fluffy ball pancakes. It is traditionally served around Christmas with powdered sugar and jam or fruit. While the name translates to “apple slices,” modern æbleskiver don’t contain apples but are made in a special pan with hemispherical wells. SR has a diner atmosphere and somewhat spacious. Comfortable seats. Staff were nice.

It was my first time trying this popular Æbleskiver. It was made really
fresh with golden brown look outside with soft texture in the inside. Flavor was good just like pancakes. Lol. The jam made it really nice. Make sure you got water or drink once you order.

Price was inexpensive.
Service was phenomenal.
Danish Culture is amazing.

Overall, I enjoyed my Æbleskiver. Say it one more time. Æbleskiver! Æbleskiver! 😀
