Pit Master James Jones takes his passion for barbecue seriously and it’s because of that he opened a restaurant inside the renovated Historic South Cle Elum Depot on April 20, 2013. “It’s a unique place and for that reason matched my vision,” Jones said.

Reviews
This restaurant has excellent BBQ and an owner who has won numerous awards for the BBQ Sauces.
With an extensive menu it was hard to decide what to choose. We decided on the Smoked Pulled Pork Sandwich and the Smoked Beef Brisquet. Both were excellent: tender, moist, smokey. All sandwich orders come with a side. We went for the BBQ beans and cole slaw. Both excellent.
You order from the counter, from an expansive Southern-themed menu: Ribs, Beef and Pork sandwiches, fried Okra, hand-cut fries, chicken, and much more. Display case with good looking pies and cakes.
Service was friendly and helpful. You can eat-in, eat-out or pick-up.
After eating, suggest going across street to the Rodeo Museum.
Emily, who helped me choose the prefect order, refilling my beverage, then continuing to check on me during my meal, ensuring everything met expectations.
Josh who is the Pit Master produced amazing, tender, moist and flavorful meat. He also gave me advice on how to reaheat my leftovers. (I bought enough for 2 more meals at home)
I would recommend Smokey’s to anyone looking for BBQ. We are lucky to have them here in Ellensburg.
After we had ordered, we noticed the PIE. Pecan for the win!! We highly recommend that you stop into Smokey’s when you are in Ellensburg.
We came on a Friday, but will return for $3.00 margaritas & tacos on Tuesdays.
The only decent one was the pulled pork sandwich. The brisket was dry and hard. The hot link was inedible on the sandwich, it had to be removed and cut with a knife as the casing was so tough and leathery. The macaroni and cheese was virtually flavorless and had this strange, almost curdled and lumpy texture. The coleslaw was also without flavor, just essentially watery cabbage.
The atmosphere would have been great too, but an employee was loudly talking to the other employees about unprofessional and inappropriate things, including complaining to customers about how she felt other employees were stealing from the tip jar.
Maybe it was an off day for them. They seem to have great reviews. I really wanted to enjoy this place, but I just felt like for the price you pay (about $80 for our lunch for 2) I didn’t receive the quality of food or service I expected.
Wonderful interior work done. Solid food from a highly decorated competition pitmaster that competed regionally and at national level.
Sides are solid and his ribs and sauces have solid flavor.
Consistency is king and having stopped by almost every chance I can when crossing the mountains and I always get what I expect.
Friendly crew and timely service.
