Per-freaking-fection! We are Northerners, turned Southerners, turned Northerners, visiting the Rocky Mount area to visit friends and family. We were blessed to find Smith’s restaurant for breakfast and everything was DIVINE. We need restaurants like Smith’s in Ohio! It’s a great model. You walk in and go to the right for takeout and to the left for dine in. The takeout line is genius. Cafeteria style with all of the best southern choices! Those who chose takeout were in and out so quickly! They all looked like repeat customers and looked quite happy! We had DJ as our server. She was very attentive and so quick in getting us refills and extras. My daughter got the 2 meat plate and I got the 1 meat plate. Mine included 2 deep fried link sausages which can only be described as “magical”. My daughter had the same and about 6 pieces of bacon as the second meat and we each had 2 eggs, a homemade biscuit, a side of tasty hash browns, and the most delicious stewed apples. My son got an order of biscuits with sausage gravy and added bacon on the side. He ate that up so quick that by the time we had started our food he was asking for more! We walked out with two full take home boxes. Nothing left for my son but plenty for my daughter and I. We will be back EVERY year and maybe before we leave town! At DJ’s suggestion we went next door to Smith’s grocery store and bought some sausage and lunch meat aa well as some locally made jams to take home as gifts! I would recommend to everyone!

Best breakfast ever! Stopped at Smith’s Restaurant while driving up to NY. Cozy atmosphere, great service, and the food was delicious. The sausage was very flavorful and had a nice snap to it. If an opportunity ever presented itself to go there again, we absolutely would.

We stopped for lunch on our way to Oak Island. Looked like a lot of local people frequent the restaurant. The wait staff was extremely friendly.
My chicken salad sandwich was delicious and onion rings definitely in house made. The hush puppies with honey butter – could tell we were eating good Southern cooking.
My husband’s fried chicken looked yummy but he commented it was a tad dry. He enjoyed his sides of butter beans and potato salad.
The line for the takeout lunch buffet was busy the entire time we were eating.

Website shows Saturday lunch will stop in January 2026, go on Saturday December 27 for lunch, and it’s already closing for Saturday Lunch. I was told that they don’t have enough patrons to keep Saturday lunch. Odd, the times we went in on Saturdays they were busy. And whats even more odd, the owners, are in a position (on the Town Board), to keep any other restaurant type businesses out of Dortches. Thats why if you have a group get together at the Smith’s Pavilion, only Smith’s Restaurant and Red & White, can provide the food. Heck even the parking lot, does not have any ADA compliant Handicap parking spots.
Imagine the money they could make with Dinner on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Unsatisfactory.

If you can get a little off the beaten path and want some really good country style food, then you definitely need to try Smith’s Restaurant. Food is excellent and service is above reproach. My server, Niki was on top of her game with me as well as all her tables. Always smiling and friendly attitude and I didn’t have to ask for anything, she was right on time with it all. Reminds me of how things used to be in the restaurant industry! Highly recommend!!!

I came as an out of towner looking at reviews. I was looking for something that wasn’t a national chain and boy did this place not disappoint. It’s a semi buffet style of restaurant. If you want something off the griddle you order it first then get in line for the hot bar. The food was amazing and I was full quickly. The waitresses were very attentive and could handle alot of people quickly. You could tell this a hot spot for locals. 9am on a Tuesday and they were swamped with people. Have to remember this for the way back to Florida next year.
