After spending two decades in Athens, GA, the year 2020 marked our heartfelt return to our roots in Charleston, a city that has always held a special place in our hearts. Our passion for burgers and the vibrant community here inspired us to embark on a culinary journey that started with spontaneous pop-ups at local breweries. This adventurous spirit quickly grew into a bustling food truck, celebrated catering services, and participation in local festivals. The next step in our adventure was a brick-and-mortar location, taking over the beloved Fair Deal Grocery at 47 Cooper St. in Downtown Charleston.

After searching for a classic smash burger, decided to try Smash City. Tucked away in the neighborhood, decorated with a 70s vibe: vinyl records, album covers, and old school lunch boxes. Burgers were true smash burgers, flat and with a crunchy edge. Lots of options for toppings. Fries were that old school lunchroom style, perfectly crispy and salted. Delicious trip back to the 70s.

Decided to ride over to this little dive after reading about their award in a local flier. They did not disappoint with their Carolina Caviar burger and the Beer Bacon Burger! The place was nice and clean despite being small. Had a fun eclectic vibe going on. Jeremy, the owner, took a moment to share the story with us. We will definitely return! Jeremy, you smashed it!

We had a group of nine people including an 18 month old with an ear infection. Jordon, was awesome. Recognizing a tired, grumpy little girl, she offered my granddaughter a French fry and it turned her frown upside down! We had such a good time that we stayed over two hours, thanks to good food, cold beer, and a great environment thanks to Jordon’s service. We will be back.

My wife and I dropped in on our 25th anniversary trip to Charleston. The food was fantastic. She had the Carolina Caviar burger and I had the beer cheese, bacon, and beef smash burger. Joey served us and was SUPER helpful and welcoming. The fries were fantastic too. It is the definition of a dive.

Great little smash burgers with the best Martin’s potato rolls! Nice and slim, well seasoned and with Brew City-style batter-dipped fries. The ambience, music, and design is all perfect for a burger joint in this less-traveled part of town. The beer cheese flavor is on point and I recommend going with at least one other person and sharing the classic double, beer bacon burger, and a small fry. You will want to dip those fries in all the leftover beer cheese and the pretzel roll is surprisingly light, no lie! The walls are covered in album covers so there’s also a LOT to look at!

Tried Smashburger recently, and it was a solid but not standout experience. The restaurant was clean, the staff was friendly, and everything moved at a steady pace, which already puts it a step above a lot of fast‑casual burger spots.
I ordered one of their classic smash burgers, and it was good — the patty had nice crisp edges and decent flavor, and the toppings were fresh. It definitely tasted better than your typical fast‑food burger, but it still didn’t have that “wow” factor I was hoping for. The fries were hot and seasoned well, just nothing particularly memorable.
Prices were fair for what you get, and the portion sizes were enough to leave me full without feeling overdone. Overall, Smashburger is a reliable choice when you want something quick and a little better than the usual burger chains, but it didn’t quite hit the level that would push it past three stars for me.

Ordered burgers from here last night, six to be exact, when we received the smash burgers. All had little to no meat on it and just looked like they were scraped off old grease and burnt hamburger. We had to throw away the burgers and order from somewhere else it was absolutely disgusting to look. It was a total waste of money.
