I don’t write reviews after one visit, unless it’s especially awful, because I know, having worked in a restaurant, there will be bad days. This review comes after two visits to the Smallman Street Deli. The orders were online for takeout. I had the “You Can’t Eat It” Sandwich and a side of Potato Latkes. On both occasions, the meat on the sandwich was very dry. The latkes were good on one visit, and like cardboard on the other. The order was supposed to include chips and a drink. They were missing on both orders. After not getting them the first time, I checked the bag before leaving and had to ask for them. The deli did ask for a review on their site, which I did and pretty much said the same things. It was never published. The photos are from the website. You wouldn’t expect a bad product by looking at them.

One of the best Reuben I ever had melting in your mouth every bite with flavor you’ll always remember! Staff was awesome answered questions and super helpful. Definitely a place you go to multiple times to try different menu options. I walked in 40 min before closing and felt welcomed

Got takeout from here during a visit to Pittsbugh. I wanted something different, something local. What I ended up with was a meal for two whole days. Sandwich was outstanding, packed and tasty. Soup was delicious. Hell, I’d make a special trip back just to order from them again.

I don’t understand some of the bad reviews because this place is great. Best deli in Pittsburgh. I eat here at least once a week. Sometimes I order to go and sometimes I eat in person but they always get my order together perfectly with speed, a lot of care, good service, and good quality. All the guys work hard. This place is a godsend for locals. Thank you all for your hard work we appreciate yall.

My search is over! Smallman Street Deli makes the world’s best Reuben Sandwich…period! Beyond that the menu is full of great stuff, the fries are delicious…and plentiful, and the atmosphere is just what you’d expect from a neighborhood deli…and a diverse clientele. Staff is helpful and friendly and the prices are reasonable for the huge amount of food they serve. It’ll be the first place I stop next time I’m in Pittsburgh. Thanks!

Nice spot. I don’t order out for lunch often but this place has some good reviews and a good reputation. They seem to be most known for their substantially large sandwiches like the rueben as well as latkes, matzah ball soup, and other items. I decided to try their MnM cookies and the simple grilled cheese.
You can’t really go wrong with a grilled cheese; it’s pretty simple. But, they do make it well here. The portion is decent and the price is also reasonable. Compared to some of their other sandwiches, it is smaller but also quite a bit cheaper (other sandwiches are generally somewhat expensive but have large portions). They use classic American cheese, which had a slight plastic taste but it was still good. Bread was still somewhat crispy and buttery. Added bonus is that they serve the sandwich with a pickle spear. Good pickle portion and very flavorful.
They offer numerous baked goods and desserts as well. They gave me two cookies. I’m not sure if that’s the standard portion or if they were just feeling generous. Either way they were very tasty. Plenty of MnMs and nice crispy edges.
All in all, would recommend if you want to stop by for lunch. Could be a bit expensive if you order a large sandwich. But, great location and a fair amount of lunch options.

Sells inedible food
Placed an online order, picked up my food and got home with 4 burnt latkes. Black. Inedible. An insult.
I emailed them to report the problem. It’s been 9 days and they haven’t responded. Only conclusion is they don’t care.
Their deli sandwiches are very good. Will still go back but will inspect everything before leaving.

1st time there today because I was on a search for house made pastrami. Well I found the spot for sure here!! Along with many other selections I’ll have to come back and try my rueben sandwich and fresh cut fries really hit the spot.
