My Fiancé and I came here on a Saturday night with some friends visiting us for the weekend. We all had a little bit too much fun the night prior and chose to dine at Small Cheval in hopes of finding a lowkey vibe that offered comforting cuisine at a professional level. I think its safe to say that Small Cheval offered us all an experience that brought not only satisfaction but also a tiny little grin amongst even the most hungover face. As an Eastern European food connoisseur new to the Chicago area, I have carefully constructed a rating system that reflects my personal thoughts, feelings, and experience.

Food: 9/10
My Fiancé and I each got the Signature Double Cheeseburger which was served house style (dijon, mayo, pickles, and onions). Overall, the burger was incredible and what made it unique was its ability to offer a savory, melt in your mouth taste without the heaviness of a burger that would sideline you on the couch for the rest of the evening. To my surprise, the soft and airy bun was able to maintain its structure until the very last bite. The pickles on the burger were thick cut and offered refreshing whispers with each bite of this savory burger.
We also shared the Golden Fries which came with a side of what I believe was garlic aioli. The fries were straight cut and a bit thicker than your typical fries. Overall, the French fries were good but maybe could’ve been a bit crispier. The real highlight was the garlic aioli. I am a bit of an aioli snob, and this aioli was flirting with perfection. The aioli came in a tiny cup, but they happily gave us more upon our request. The aioli really took these fries to the next level.

Drink: 8/10
The menu had some extensive drink options which looked interesting and delicious, but the only drink we ordered was their Hopewell Seasonal beer. I believe I was served a Hazy IPA which was delicious. The hoppiness of the beer with a subtle fruitiness complimented the burger and fries perfectly.

Atmosphere: 9/10
The menu is kept simple and straight to the point, which provides the costumer with an intimate ordering experience. The outdoor patio allows customers to sit where they choose while enjoying the weather. This is a great option for a quick and casual sit-down meal done at a professional level.

Return Likelihood: 9/10
This was a burger that I find myself still thinking about from time to time. They have perfected their craft and leave you wanting more. The prices are reasonable, and the quick/casual nature of Small Cheval make this a place that I can easily return to for a reliable gourmet meal.

Thanks for the wonderful experience,

A standout burger place that feels simple but really knows what it is doing. The focus is clearly on quality ingredients and perfect execution rather than gimmicks. Burgers are juicy, well seasoned, and cooked just right. Fries are crisp and classic.

The space is casual and straightforward, with a vibe that says come as you are and enjoy good food without fuss. Service is friendly and efficient, matching the overall tone of the place. If you want a top notch burger in a laid back setting, this is a great choice. Solid all around.

Fries aren’t crispy. They’re actually a little soggy… not sure what went wrong but their burgers last Friday night was also meh. Long wait times for disappointing food isn’t the best. The servers are super nice and friendly. But hard to say the food is good.

Small Cheval Old Town delivers taste, quality and perfection. The SC menu is similar to other locations but features cocktails and canned Rosé. If you’re in Ols Town and craving a Burger or Cheeseburger, this is your one stop shop. The cost maybe a bit more, but the portion and fresh ingredients make up the difference. The fries are stellar, Strawberry shake is flavorful and the burgers are spot on cooked. Can’t rave more about the staff or the cleanliness of the restaurant. The patio seating gets crowded and although they have covered tents, there is no circulation (outdoor fans) on humid days. If you have time to kill nothing beats a cold brew and burger at Small Cheval Old Town.

OVERHYPED, DON’T GO. Probably the worst burger I’ve had in years. More bun than actual burger. Incredibly dry, flavorless, and bland. I don’t know how you manage to make a garlic aioli bland but by god they did it. Fries are under seasoned and not crispy at all. Any fast food burger could top this $17 pile of sadness and disappointment.

If not the best burger in Chicago, then It’s certainly in the top 10. It’s juicy and flavorful and the bun and condiments really complement the meat. Cheese has a mild sharpness to it.

The shoestring fries are good. Get the mayo to dip them in.

Shakes are absolutely amazing. Very thick and delicious.

I arrived when they opened on a Thursday morning and there was no line. Got my burger within five minutes. Service was friendly and helpful.

There’s no indoor seating. Outdoor seating consists of picnic tables flanked by propane heaters.

They offer gluten free buns

Went on a cold November afternoon while visiting Chicago. The burger is very tasty and fresh, BUT THE FRIES are the star here in my opinion. Golden, crispy and flavored with the perfect amount of salt. Get a side of garlic aioli to dip the fries in for even more depth of flavor. I think I would have to say these are the best fries I have ever had.

This is a fun burger joint… it give upscale in-and-out haha—we got cheeseburgers, fires, and an Oreo shake. Honestly nothing stood out, it’s your average burger joint with a fun atmosphere

Food was pretty tasty and at a good value. The burgers all have 2 patties. The shake was phenomenal. I mixed all 3 flavors: chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. It was so smooth and didn’t feel heavy.

It was really hard to find a place to sit. There is a super limited first come seating area, and people tend to take up whole tables for smaller parties. It’s easier to take out if you have a larger group.

The staff are all very positive and up beat. They forgot to give me fries, and we’re very helpful in making it right, with a great attitude.

Great burgers!! Yes that’s all they have!! I arrived in Chicago STARVING and this place saved the day. I had the cheeseburger with bacon, lettuce and tomato, fries and a strawberry shake. The shake was super thick and rich and had strawberry pieces inside. The only reason it’s not a 5-star rating is because of the price… I spent $33 .
