I’ve passed El Matador in Fort Oglethorpe countless times and finally decided to give it a try. There was no wait and we were seated right away, which was a nice surprise. Our server was friendly and attentive, and the food came out quickly.

The salsa was excellent—definitely a standout. The chips were just okay at first, but the second batch was warm and much better. As for the entrees, they were decent—not the best I’ve had in town, but still enjoyable. I will say the Mexican rice was really good and flavorful.

The restaurant was clean, the staff welcoming, and overall it was a pleasant experience. I wouldn’t say it’s my top pick for Mexican food in the area, but I’d definitely return occasionally.

If you’re checking out this spot, be sure to like my photos and follow me—I’m working on building up my local food content and really appreciate the support!

irst time visit to a very well known and long term established Mexican restaurant in which I have no idea why we’ve never visited. Seated right away due to a large dining interior and the smell of flavorful foods wafting throughout, plus the painted walls of flashy dancers and hometown scenes made our visit all the more pleasant and welcoming. When our orders of Chicken fajitas and Supreme Quesadillas(which had Shrimp and chicken) arrived very quickly we knew we had picked an awesome restaurant for our Saturday night dinner, not to mention the delicious hot and very flavorful foods. Definitely will partake of this sort of historical landmark of a 5 star restaurant.

This was the first time I’ve been at this location and I regret it. I regret not stopping before. The food was great and the service was great. I ordered the steak fajita and it was amazing. Everything was hot and fresh and I received my order very quickly. As great as the food was the sweet tea was off the chain. I don’t know who made it but they deserve a raise. Kudos to everyone there. Great experience.

I recently had a very disappointing experience at El Matador that I feel compelled to share.

From the moment we arrived, the service was poor. Our server was rude and dismissive, showing no courtesy or professionalism throughout our visit. When we finally received our drinks, mine was so strong it was nearly undrinkable—almost as if it had been made incorrectly out of spite. The balance was completely off, tasting more like straight alcohol than a properly mixed cocktail.

What made the situation even worse was the server’s attitude when my friend requested her margarita be made fresh instead of using the premix. Rather than simply accommodating this reasonable request, the server became argumentative and acted as though we were being difficult customers. It’s a basic expectation at any restaurant that guests can request modifications, especially when it comes to how their drinks are prepared.

To make matters worse, it took an extremely long time for the server to even acknowledge our table after that. We sat waiting for service, unable to address the drink issue or order our food in a timely manner. The lack of attentiveness was frustrating and made what should have been an enjoyable dinner out feel like an ordeal.

I’ve heard good things about El Matador in the past, which makes this experience all the more disappointing. The combination of rude service, argumentative behavior over a simple drink request, poorly made drinks, and extended wait times left us feeling unwelcome and dissatisfied.

I hope the management takes feedback seriously and addresses these service issues, as they significantly detracted from what could have been a pleasant dining experience.

This place is always our go to when we are in the area. 5 Starts everything. The chicken flautas are so so juicy. The chicken has never been dry, the strawberry water and peach water are our favorite. So so good and they do not disappoint with the portions.
This is the place you go when you are hungry and want good quality food asap!
Everyone there is always great. I have had an amazing experience every time.

The food was surprisingly delicious and the service was great. The items like the rice and refried beans, typically served at Mexican restaurants, were flavorful and not over cooked like many other restaurants. The Quesadillas and Chimichangas were excellent. Definitely worth checking out.

This is my favorite place to get steak frajetas and cost is $9.99. Comes on a sizzling hot dish with a separate plate of additions (refried beans, rice, shredded lettuce, sour cream) and 4 wraps.
Went there on December 27th, 2025. It was busy but service was prompt and server came by several times too see if we needed anything else.

I mean it’s Mexican food but boy that place could use a face-lift along with an actual bartender cause you shouldn’t have to tell someone how to make a long island nor a whiskey neat. And of course when you say something it’s the typical mumbling and blank stares.
