Great food. Great atmosphere. Great service. I travel here on business and this is probably one of my favorite spots in town.

Just to start out. I’m Chicago born and raised. My great-uncle started a restaurant in Chicago in the early 70s that still exists and has become a sort of icon in the Chicago Pizza world.
I, myself, became a truck driver delivering brand new cars around the country. In my travels I like to experience different foods and experiences. This is definitely one of those experiences that left an impression.
Simp’s is a restaurant/bar set in a relatively old tavern in Decatur, AL. I’ve traveled around the South. I live in North Carolina now, but this is truly the Deep South. The South one reads about in books. The charm, Southern hospitality and all that goes with it.
First, the food was fabulous. I had the Lobster Ravioli and Shrimp which had plenty of both plus beautifully cooked vegetables and sausage. The veggies were cooked perfectly- bright, colorful, crunchy, and delicious.
For dessert, I had their version of Southern Peach Pie and ice cream. A glass of Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale to complement my meal. The meal was wonderful. I highly recommend Simp McGhee’s.
The experience was the people. I got there on a Saturday when they first opened (5pm Central time). I’m sure the younger crowd showed up later because almost everyone there was 55 and older.
So am I, so I should have fit in. Unfortunately for me, this is the Deep South. Everyone was well dressed as if eating out is a very special occasion. They take pride in their appearance. Me, a nice, clean, t-shirt style shirt, tan cargo shorts and a pair of running shoes. Damn Yankee. Next time, I’ll know better.
Anyways, if you’re passing through Decatur, Alabama, stop and have a great meal at Simp’s! Dress decent.

My husband and I ordered an appetizer and entree (the pork chop that we shared). It took an hour for one pork chop to come out. While waiting I asked if we could have another drink on the house because of how long it was taking. Waitress said the manager told her they don’t do free alcohol but could give us a desert or discount. I said a discount is fine. When we got our meal the pork chop was very dry. The discount was minimal. We ate here over a year ago with the same type experience and didn’t say anything thinking it might’ve just been a hard night. I feel like the manager could have at least come to our table, introduced herself and offered an apology. Our waitress was very sweet and felt bad for how long it took and I expressed that it wasn’t her fault. This will be my last time here!

Wonderful New Orleans themed dinner location in downtown Decatur. Beautiful historic building with nice views, upstairs dining, downstairs bar and some outside seating. Prices are reflected by the selection and quality selection. Great attentive service and friendly staff.
We ordered steak which was delicious and a couple appetizers- also delicious!!

Nice place. Not what we expected.
Music for Friday evening was nice, but concert
Level loud for such a small quaint place.
Service was slow, in attentive and hard to hear over the music. Dishes served without utensils, on two courses.
Would not recommend if you are looking for a quiet evening with good service. But, a very nice place.

Service is extremely slow. Had reservations for 5 adults and an 8 mo old at 6pm last Friday. Took 30+ min to put in app orders, another 30+ min to receive it. A table of 20 was seated 15-30 minutes after us. They received their entrees by 7:30PM. We did not receive our entrees until after 8pm and the entire 2nd floor (minus party of 20) was empty by then. Requested to have our 2 meals to go, but for the others to remain and eat. They boxed everyone’s meal up, and the waitress tried to serve our other guest out of a box. I actually had to request her to have them plated so they can eat. The waitress had to be reminded a couple of times to bring enough appetizer plates and napkins for everyone at the table. Waterboy rocked it, and at least kept our waters filled.
The food is heavily salted. Tuna tartare was good, but very salty. The crawfish eggrolls have very little crawfish in them. The steaks were cooked perfectly, but again very salty. Mashed potatoes had way too much sour cream and were very stiff. Crabcake was a glorified biscuit, with very little crab meat, let alone lumps of it. Broccolini was steamed with no seasoning.
Will not visit again. Would not recommend.

This place is pretty over priced. The food lacks flavor/seasonings. However the servers were amazing and do a wonderful job that’s really the only reason I am giving 3 stars. The lamb is pretty bland and very chewy. I could hardly even cut it with the knife. I will give this restaurant another try in the future and hopefully be able to give a 5 star review based off the food.

Service was very slow. We arrived at 5 to an almost empty restaurant. It took 15 min to get drinks and order 1 appetizer. Appetizer can quickly but server did not take out entree order until after the appetizer was gone. We ordered entrees at 540 and it took til 650 to get our food. We were a table of 3! That is over an hour to get 3 entrees and the food came luke warm. When a server set our food down she said your welcome and left. I never even got a chance to say thank you. Tables that came in after us ate and left before we even received our food. We will not be back and I would never recommend this place!!

Hands down some of the best food I’ve eaten in a restaurant in a long time. The absolute best burger I’ve ever eaten in 42yrs! The crawfish egg rolls were superb along with the fried green beans! 10 out of 10! Savanna our waitress was a delight as well!
