Signature South Indian Restaurant – Tunbridge Wells – MapQuest
Reviews
The service is attentive and clearly knowledgeable, making great recommendations for those unfamiliar with true South Indian specialities. However, the real stars of the show are undoubtedly the dosas. If you visit Signature Indian and don’t order a dosa, you are missing out on their true signature dish. These vast, delicate crepes, made from fermented rice and lentil batter, arrive at the table as impressive, golden-brown scrolls that practically demand attention. I opted for the classic Masala Dosa, and it was perfection—crisp and wafer-thin on the outside, light and slightly spongy towards the centre, and filled with a perfectly seasoned, fluffy potato mash. The accompanying sides—the warm, savoury sambar and the trio of freshly made, intensely flavoured chutneys (especially the sharp coconut chutney)—elevated the dish from a simple pancake to a complex, satisfying meal.
Beyond the dosas, the rest of the menu maintains the same standard, focusing on freshness and aromatic spices over heavy cream or oil. The curries offer a fantastic depth of flavour and a pleasant heat that never overwhelms. Whether you’re a connoisseur of regional Indian cuisine or simply looking for an Indian meal that breaks the mold of standard high street fare, Signature Indian is a mandatory visit. It’s a genuine culinary treasure that brings the authentic taste of South India to the heart of Kent.
The plates were cold and the door to the restaurant was left wide open food did not stay warm for long. My wife had to ask for the rice to be warmed again as her main took so long to arrive it was cold. The decor is very poor, I would expect better. I am unsure if it is staffed differently in the evening. 1 person doing everything and 1 cook in a very small space its no wonder the food couldn’t arrive at the same time.
The waitress was polite and I could not fault her.
I will not be going back and I will not be recommending the restaurant.
As I stated at the beginning the taste of the dishes was good although they may want to consider presentation. As unfortunately in today’s world it not only needs to taste good but look good as well.
Fingers crossed they stay open long enough to learn and improve.
Charged 10% service charge for me to collect my own takeaway- really?
Two of my friends received their food after waiting about 30 minutes, while the other two of us had to wait even longer while they were already eating. It was frustrating that the meals didn’t arrive at the same time, especially since the restaurant was not busy.
The portion sizes were also very small. In addition, one of the dishes I ordered was not what I was served. We also ordered banana fritters for starters , but they tasted like fish and chips, which made us think the oil had not been changed.
At the end, while paying the bill, we asked the waitress if we could speak to the owner, who had been in the shop when we first arrived. The waitress went to inform him, but instead of coming out to speak with us, he stayed sitting in his car outside and sent a message through the waitress saying, “That’s the quantity we provide.” We found this response quite rude and unprofessional.
On a positive note, the waitress herself was very polite and helpful throughout the evening, and we have no complaints about her service.
Overall, the experience was disappointing due to the long wait times, small portions, and the way our concerns were handled. Unfortunately, I would not recommend this restaurant to others.
The waitress needed to smile a bit, the atmosphere was a little dull . ( full lighting, no background music ) only four other dining the whole time we were there- they were gone within 20 minutes.
Slow service on cold plates, food not great, chicken thigh in one dish looked suspiciously rare. Toilet is shared facility no hand drier working- and by Christ you will need this one facility after eating here !
Unfortunately the service is a little slow although our server has always been very accommodating, helpful and polite. The restaurant does lack a bit of atmosphere but that honestly doesn’t detract from the food. I urge you to go and try this South Indian jewel of a restaurant
Our server was sweet but apparently very inexperienced.
The decor is bland – like a cafeteria. Unfortunately there were cleaning materials left lying around. This was a Friday night at peak time but there were not many other customers. The room was so cold we had to keep our coats on.
The loo is foul – absolutely filthy and very scruffy as if nobody cares. It sends bad signals about overall hygiene.
The dosa (rice crepe) was spectacular. This is something you can’t get anywhere else nearby, and the London ones pale in comparison. It was the highlight of our meal. They were also as long as my partners arm! You will not be disappointed.
Beyond this their curries were beautifully layered. The mix of spices in the South Indian curries created a beautiful complexity. This is not your “everything has red coloured sauce” Indian food on every high street. This is a place to go if you want delicious food.
The decor is humble, but don’t be that person, you’re there for the food. The food is amazing. Go. Now.
The staff were really nice too. You can’t go wrong.
Really. Stop reading. Go. Now.
