Popped in around 8:45 pm for a quick dinner and was honestly blown away. The food was amazing and the service was absolutely top notch from start to finish.

We started with the tuna crispy rice and salmon crispy rice at $12 each, which felt like an absolute steal. Both were beyond delicious, super flavorful, perfectly textured, and pretty unique compared to what you usually find.

My wife ordered the Yellowtail Lovers roll and ate every single bite. She kept saying how good it was.

The star of the night was the Tekka Don. The chef made it extra special for me with a sampler of maguro, chutoro, and otoro over perfectly cooked and seasoned sushi rice, topped with crunchy masago. It also came with warm miso soup, two gyoza, and a side of seaweed salad. Every part of it was outstanding.

On top of that, the chef was one of the nicest guys you could meet and even sent over dessert on the house. Also its BYOB so another bonus.

For a first experience, you really can’t ask for more. 15/10. I’d recommend this place to everyone I know.

I first tried Shota when my family brought a take out dish home for me, an order of Unagi Don. The food was amazing and came in a nice little bento box.

Needless to say, I was very excited to come back myself and try some dishes in person, and I was absolutely blown away! Every single dish was assembled beautifully and had wonderful flavor!

More than that, the staff are incredibly friendly, welcoming, and attentive. Right from when we walked in through the doors, we were treated like regulars.

Our precious go to Japanese restaurant had closed down last year, so I’m really glad we discovered Shota! We’ll definitely be back often!

My husband and I enjoyed a delicious dinner date at Shota. The atmosphere was clean and inviting, making it a great place for a relaxed evening out. As sushi lovers, we made sure to try their special rolls, and they did not disappoint—they were absolutely delicious! We especially loved the fire roll and how beautifully it was presented. The service was also very nice, which made the experience even better.

Shota Japanese Kitchen delivers on every level — ambiance, service, and most importantly, quality. The space feels modern yet welcoming, with a clean aesthetic that reflects the precision of the cuisine.

The sushi was exceptionally fresh and beautifully plated. Each bite was balanced and refined, showcasing true attention to detail. The specialty rolls were creative without being overpowering.
Service was attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely hospitable — the kind of experience that makes you want to return.

If you appreciate high-quality Japanese cuisine with a polished presentation and elevated flavors, this is absolutely a place to visit. A true 5-star experience.

Outstanding food and service. The atmosphere with the open kitchen is a very nice touch as well. Our food was delicious! We enjoyed every bite. The lunch special is a great deal especially considering the quality of the sushi. I ended up having leftovers and looked forward to eating it later in the day.

5 Stars – A Must-Try Gem in Hillsdale!

What a fantastic dining experience! Shota Japanese Kitchen is a true hidden gem that recently opened in Hillsdale, and I can’t recommend it enough. The food was absolutely outstanding. Every dish we tried was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented.

The sushi and sashimi were incredibly fresh—some of the best I’ve had. If you’re a fan of tuna tartare, do not miss it here! It was exquisite—small, tender chunks of tuna paired perfectly with avocado and seaweed. So fresh and satisfying!

I had the chicken teriyaki with shrimp tempura, and both were cooked to perfection—crispy, savory, and full of flavor. Everyone in my group loved their meals. They even served a complimentary soup, and we got to try some melt-in-your-mouth salmon and tuna sashimi that were just superb.

I couldn’t stop saying how much I loved this place. The atmosphere is clean, inviting, and there’s always parking available—which is a big plus. Just a quick tip: if it’s raining or your shoes are wet, the floor might feel a bit slippery, so walk with care.

Overall, Shota is a wonderful addition to the area, and I’m so glad we gave it a try. I’ll definitely be back again—and again!

Koreans know fish like the Japanese…it is part of our culture and cuisines. We only eat at the best places. I have a few favorite spots all around NJ but this place is by far the best quality in freshness, menu, cooking quality amd taste in the local area. Even the most classic udon is on a different level than Ive ever tasted or expected from a local restaurant other than in NYC or even in Korea. Same for the basic tempura which they make so light and perfectly crispy with the freshest assortment of vegetables. You can easily taste the freshness amd quality of the fish. Portions are large and well prepared. Most of all, the service is 5-star.
They tske pride in explaining all their dishes. Award winning worthy all around. Great ambiance to bring family and friends or meeting. MUST TRY and my new goto every week!
