Apparently chef cares a lot about his fish. You can tell from the texture, the flavor, cleanliness and purity. He does leave it up to you for the wasabi but I’d prefer the chef does it.

The ramen was simple, send homemade. The pork in the ramen was certainly homemade and so I’m inclined to think so was the broth. I don’t think the noodles were but I could be wrong.

Service was polite and strong mannered. I like that. Yes, they are Japanese which certainly makes a difference.

While the food could have gotten a 5 star rating, the tonkotsu broth was a bit weak. A touch of dashi or allowing it to reduce more would be helpful.

Overall the food was excellent. The uni and toro was okay. I am so use to eating in Japan with fresh high quality expensive toro and uni. So I was spoiled. For New York, it is not bad. We also had Ramen. The fish looks very fresh, sashimi

This is the most authentic tasting Japanese restaurant that we’ve found in upstate New York. We had the age-dofu, tempura, and sushi deluxe meal. Everything tasted amazing and service was fantastic!

one word… AMAZING! This small, unassuming restaurant has what might be the best sushi in the area. The menu is mostly sushi/sashimi and is made from the best quality fish. Thank you Shiki for having real spanish mackerel, and proper toro.

Don’t forget to end your meal with a little of their homemade ice cream, the red bean is my favorite. Though, the matcha is excellent.

came in a little more than an hour before close. it seemed busy for this time of night but we were quickly accommodated and had our orders taken. the woman at the front handling the host duties, serving, and cleaning tables was incredible. so kind and made sure everyone was happy even after the kitchen had technically closed. the food was delicious and the toro in particular was fantastic. we will definitely be returning.

Very nice authentic Japanese restaurant. The service was friendly and efficient. I had a selection of their sushi as well as their tonkotsu ramen. My only gripe is that their tap water tasted horrible. I couldn’t even drink it because it tasted so bad. Everything else deserves five stars.

My boyfriend and I have been coming here for four years of our undergrad and will be so sad to leave Shiki when we graduate, it is our favorite restaurant of all time. Our favorites are the salmon sashimi, the tamago, unagi, and chirashi. Super recommend Shiki for anyone who likes authentic sushi!!!

[Update] the restaurant is open and I recommend making a reservation if you are planning to visit during the busy hour. You can certainly walk in but sometimes you have to wait a while to get seated. Their menu got a lot smaller but the food still tastes great!

[UPDATE] – THE RESTAURANT IS CLOSED FOR LUNCH. OPENS ONLY FOR DINNER 5-9PM!!
I highly recommend! I can say that this restaurant provides the best Japanese food you can get around here! From appetizer to main course, and sushi, everything tastes good. I visit here almost once to twice every month and I always get satisfied after each meal. The restaurant is small but even when you have to wait, it’s definitely worth it. You can try the famous and common Japanese dishes in this restaurant. Get an appetizer, or order your choice of sushi, and have an order of main course dish then it will fill you up! When you order sushi, specify how many you want for each fish.

Today, I went to Shiki for the first time after talking about it for months. I lived in Japan for a semester abroad and later, as an English teacher for a total of 5 and a half years. So, I’ve eaten a lot of Japanese food, making my expectations a bit higher than most. My mom, who enjoys trying different foods, had never been to an authentic Japanese restaurant, so I thought it would be nice to take her out to try something new, and to share a little bit of my travels with her right here in Rochester. We both had a great time in the relaxing, quiet atmosphere, and she said it was the best meal she’d had at a restaurant all year. Indeed, the food was excellent – it brought me right back to my time in Japan. The prices are extremely fair, especially for authentic Japanese food. If you go for sushi, you will probably have a different bill than we did, but I still don’t think it was unreasonable. That said, we went selected from different parts of the menu.
I did my research with the aim of locating a real deal spot run by a Japanese chef in Rochester – this isn’t the case at many of the sushi or ramen joints you find popping up all around the country, and if you want authentic Japanese food, it’s something you should genuinely consider. Coincidentally, I read on the website that the chef is from Hokkaido, which is where I happened to live and work. The annual snowfall there makes Rochester look like a paradise in winter.
Onto the food – We ordered several different plates, which I suggest everyone do; This is a common way to order when dining at an Izakaya (Japanese Pub). Getting a little bit of everything and sharing it with the people you’re dining with is fun because you all get to talk about what you liked, and it’s also nice because you don’t have to have a whole plate of the same food.
The salad was a nice starter to the meal. I enjoyed the dressing, which we found out had some sesame, soy sauce, and Kewpie mayo.
The tempura was excellent. A perfectly fried assortment of vegetables with two jumbo shrimp. Delightfully light – not too oily by any stretch.
Karage (fried chicken) was also good, piping hot as I expected (unable to wait, I burned my mouth, worth it). A nice portion for two to split, especially since we indulged in two different fried foods…
The udon also paired well with the tempura – a light, “yasashii” flavored soup. I enjoyed the slice of fish cake on top as well.
The table next to us had some fantastic plates in front of them. I was especially interested in the katsu curry, which is one of my favorite dishes of all time… Next time I’m in Rochester, I will certainly be back, and I have a feeling my mom will become a regular. Highly recommend Shiki!

Super authentic Japanese restaurant. As far as authenticity goes, this is probably the closest you will ever find to a Japanese style sushi restaurant in Rochester, maybe even NYS.
Great Japanese style atmosphere. Very friendly staff, some of whom can speak both Japanese and English.
Japanese-owned.
Will be back for sure.
