If you’re even thinking about getting a cheesesteak, stop what you’re doing and go to Shay’s Steaks. I’m not exaggerating when I say this was the best cheesesteak I’ve ever had in my life. First of all, the owner/chef is incredible. Friendly, attentive, and clearly passionate about what he’s doing. You can tell he genuinely cares about the food and the people he’s serving. That kind of energy makes the whole experience better before you even take your first bite. And then you do take that first bite and it’s over. Perfectly cooked steak, seasoned just right, melty cheese, fresh bread. Everything balanced exactly how it should be. I’ve had cheesesteaks from all over, and nothing even comes close. This one set the standard so high I might have to rethink every other sandwich I’ve ever rated. Was given so many freebies, including fries, soda, and even a shirt! If I could hire this man as my personal chef, I would. At this point, I trust him with my life and definitely my lunch.

Outstanding cheesesteak! This is the first cheesesteak place that I’ve been to that offers four choices of premium meats. I went with the NY Strip with cooper sharp. It was freshly made and hot! The meat was tender, flavorful and juicy. I am getting to like seeded rolls, but this one was soft like a regular roll only with seeds. It had a nice texture and I like the fact that they gut their rolls. Also, the hand cut fries were pretty good. Service was good, the place was clean and I appreciated the Manager checking on the customers. I highly recommend giving them a try. True rating 9.4 / 10

Found this place while visit family nearby. Legit steak!!! What’s even better is the ability to upgrade to prime rib or wagyu! The hand cut fries were amazing too.

Showed up again today (third visit) and the owner was here working. Amazing guy … very proud of what he’s built and should be. Probably the best steak sandwich I’ve had. He was handing out pieces of the Wagyu… I’m getting that next visit

There are a lot of places in Philly to get a delicious cheesesteak, but there is nothing like Shay’s. Shay’s Steaks is a full-on community highlight. The owner Scott is one of the nicest guys I have ever met and provided us with an above and beyond amazing experience from start to finish. He gave recommendations on his favorites, provided us with some stories of famous people who have visited (very cool picture wall with a lot of local bands!), and truly made us feel welcome. Our favorite was the Philly Special. A little spice and huge flavor. There isn’t a freezer in the place and you can tell from the freshness of all the ingredients. These are not “cheap” cheesesteaks, but you are getting your money’s worth as the steaks are so stuffed that you need a fork to eat it all. I have visited Shay’s 5 times in the last year and look forward to going every time I am in Philly. The staff, the food, and the overall consistency of experience is incredible… Every time is like the first time.

The best Philly experience for those in the know!
Don’t fall into the trap of the “famous” spots across town. If you want a 10/10 cheesesteak without the outdoor-only seating and massive tourist lines, go to Shay’s.
The Food: The classic cheesesteak and fries were phenomenal. Next time, I’m trying the filet!
The Vibe: Authentic, local, and welcoming. Hearing that the Red Clay Strays frequent this spot only confirmed we were in the right place.
Pro Tip: If you’re visiting in the winter, the indoor seating here is a lifesaver. It’s a bit tight for large groups, but way better than freezing at a picnic table at the “original” spots.
Skip the hype, get the steak at Shay’s.

These aren’t your typical Philly cheesesteaks. The quality of the meat was very good, hence the price. They are also significantly smaller than your typical Philly cheesesteak. We ordered the NY strip & the prime rib cheesesteaks, and we both liked the strip more. These 2 sandwiches cost 50$. They charged 1$ for a side of cherry peppers, and not only did they charge me for 2, but only gave me 1. And the 1 had 5 slices of peppers in it, that’s not enough. Come on.

If I could give this place 10 stars, I would. I’m from San Antonio and knew I wanted to try a good cheesesteak so I read so many reviews and there was so many to choose from in the area. I’m glad I chose this place bc they did NOT disappoint. Food was so fresh and never frozen. You can tell in every bite. Owners husband came and made us feel very welcome and even chased us out to give us a shirt to invite us to their new restaurants opening in Vegas and on the way to LA. WE WLL DEFINITELY be going to their locations there soon! 10/10

Three of my friends and I were roadtripping and stopped in Philly for about an hour or so. We knew we wanted a Philly cheesesteak and happened to drive by this place when finding parking for the cathedral. Amazing food, delicious first real cheesesteak for the four of us. Scott the husband of the owner welcomed us with open arms and even let us try wings that he was tossing right there in the restaurant. What amazing guy and place! All the workers were great and it’s definitely got some history and pizzaz! We had a wonderful time as one of our only stops in Philly!

Grabbed a classic cheesesteak to go.
Easy to order with the touchscreens, and it was pretty quiet on a Monday night, so my order was ready quickly.
My cheesesteak was delicious, the meat juicy, the cheese not the star of the show but a great binder, and the caramelized onions perfect. The sesame seed bread was decent too.
Not the cheapest cheesesteak in town, but there’s definitely more quality.

For my first time in Philadelphia and my first time trying a philly cheesesteak, I couldn’t have asked for a better experience! The service was amazing – as soon as I arrived, the man who seemed to be the owner or manager opened the door for me and welcomed me in, and he also checked in on how I was enjoying things once I had my food. The cheesesteak itself was great – good portion size and really delicious. Such a great start to my trip!
