Shanghai Chinese Restaurant has been a favorite of mine for years. When I lived nearby, it was my go-to spot and it was always good. Recently, I went back with my parents, and I’m happy to say it’s better than ever.

We ordered the sesame chicken along with some dim sum, and everything was incredible. The chicken was clearly real, fresh, high-quality chicken—crispy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The dim sum was just as impressive, and now I’m genuinely torn every time I go between ordering dim sum or that sesame chicken because both are that good.

They’ve also added some new menu items that are absolutely worth trying. After trying the pineapple bbq puff, I went back the next day hoping to have it again, but it was sold out—which honestly just tells you how popular and good it must be. The atmosphere has noticeably improved recently too; it feels warmer, more welcoming, and just an even better place to be.

Even though I live farther away now, this is still my go-to takeout spot. I’ll happily make the drive. I visited with my parents after seeing an email about Mr. He’s 10-year anniversary—what an incredible milestone. The work he does truly shows in the food, the consistency, and the care put into the restaurant.

I hope more people get the chance to experience how special this place is. Shanghai Chinese Restaurant continues to set the bar high, and I can’t recommend it enough.

Oh my gosh. I don’t know why this place has such low ratings?! I love dim sum & duck & although I don’t eat it often I am picky. This place I tried only once but they delivered exceptional service & food. I came on Christmas bc I didn’t want to cook and they were open. The lady at the front was so sweet and helpful, even offered me a drink as I waited for my food.

We ordered the pecking duck, combination lo mein, and chicken dumplings. The duck was cooked perfect & was juicy. We got the half order and they gave me a good amount of meat not any bones in my order which i was very happy about. I’ve been to some places where they hardly give any meat and it all bones. Not this place. Everything was so yum & they packaged my order perfectly. They remembered the chili oil and everything. My bf who doesn’t eat dim sum or duck often also really liked the food here so that should say something!!! We will definitely be coming back.

This is the best Chinese food I’ve had in Austin. Made fresh with lots of flavor. Big, luscious shrimp dishes. Excellent cookery.

Dim sum portions are good size. Service was very good.

Honestly surprised it’s not rated higher. This is my go to spot! Super yummy, quick service, and super clean! Dim sum if you want a chiller not as stressed vibe. No carts though but again the vibes are chill and on the quieter side so I really enjoy coming for breakfast

A pretty solid dim sum restaurant. I liked the variety and price wise, it was pretty decent. My personal favorites that I always get are the Black Bean Ribs, Har Gow (Shrimp Dumplings), Shu Mai, and Shrimp Rice Noodle Rolls. This place also does a really good Salt & Pepper Tofu. They managed to keep the inside soft, but the outside has a nice crisp. Will keep this in mind whenever we’re back in town.

Not sure why they have only 3.9 star. It was my first time trying their Dim Sum and the food was great, my waitress was nice and active, also the atmosphere is good. I will definitely be back more often.

First time dining here for lunch and have only good things to say about it. Great attentive service and good tasting food. Forgot to take pictures before eating so these are after we were done. Portions were huge and this was what’s left remaining. The dim sum is really good too and I enjoyed the Chrysanthemum tea with rock sugar a lot. Highly recommended.

We have been to this location several times and were very pleased with this experience. We went on Saturday expecting long wait, but we got seated upon arrival. The atmosphere was cool with plenty of seatings. The tables are set with rooms for customers to move around without bumping into the other patrons.
There are 2 options for ordering, using an App or directly with the server. We opted to order with the server, Kendra. Kendra was very personable and attentive.
The prices are expected for Dim Sum and comparable with other restaurants serving Dim Sum.
The Shrimp Shumai was moist. It was filled with ground and whole shrimp pieces. The skin was velvety and melted in the mouth.
The same can be said for the Pork Shuma, Har Gow, Fried Shrimp Balls, and Fried Crab Claw. We appreciate they didn’t skimp on the filling and you can actually tasted all the ingredients they used.
The Congee was smooth and nicely accented by slightly salty century egg and pieces of pork. Adding a little chili oil brings it to the next level.
The Combination Lo Mein has a deep, umami flavor and again we were impressed with the big pieces of chicken, pork, and whole shrimp.
The Baked Tart and Sesame balls were divine. The Sesame balls are filled with sweet, red bean paste. The outer skin is tender, with a slight chewy bite which is the sign of a well-made Sesame ball. The tarts were super delicious. The egg custard melts in the mouth and the crust was very flaky.
We had an amazing experience at Shanghai Chinese Restaurant and looking forward to our next visit.

If you haven’t been here in a while, it’s worth trying again! We came here 2 years ago and were pretty unimpressed, but I read on a food forum that they’ve made improvements and decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed! We came during a weekday lunch and everything was made fresh to order. Great that it was fresh, but it did take a while for all the dishes to come out. You can tell most items are made in-house, not frozen. Dare I say it was better than New Fortune?? The shumai and shrimp cilantro dumplings were our favorite and had generous servings of shrimp. Spare ribs and chicken feet were tasty as well. Service was good, although the place was fairly empty. I hope more people try it out bc we need more dim sum places here in the city! I can’t be driving 40 min for a dim sum fix.
