The inside of the restaurant was beautiful and the wood work throughout was amazing. We arrived a little early for our reservation so we could look around and we got seated very quickly. Our waiter Carrie was so nice and personable. We were joking around with her the whole time!
With this restaurant being in a castle and it being “medieval themed” we were expecting possible mead or at least mugs for our beer but once we started ordering, we realized that everything was ordinary and just had special names which was disappointing. We did try some new beers and the were very good.
Food wise, we were not impressed. This valentines dinner came with an appetizer, soup or salad, entrée, dessert, and two glasses of champagne. We got the bruschetta and the pork Wellington. The bruschetta was probably my most favorite dish we had. It was flavorful, light, and delicious! The pork Wellington was salty and slightly overcooked in my opinion. For the next course we got the red pepper bisque and the Caesar salad. The bisque came with a couple of drops of cream in the center and honestly, it needed way more because it was very bitter from the bell peppers. We added some of the whipped butter that came with the rolls and that really helped improve the flavor. The Caesar salad needed more dressing even though the dressing also lacked flavor. Now onto the main course (each entree came with chefs potatoes and a side of vegetables). We got the most expensive item on the menu that came with two 4oz fillets and a lobster tail, and we got the prime rib. The prime rib was cooked very well and was paired nicely with a horseradish sauce and au jus for dipping. The chefs potatoes were crispy and very delicious. The fillets and lobster tail dish was the worst plate of the night. The steak was most likely an 8oz fillet that was cut in half (unevenly). I ordered it medium rare so the thicker side came cooked correctly but unfortunately the thinner side was overcooked. There was not a single spec of seasoning on the entire steak and just tasted like burnt charcoal. Same with the vegetables, they were basically steamed and plopped on my plate. Not a single spec of any seasoning. The lobster tail was cooked to perfection and was amazing with the melted butter and was my most favorite item of the night. We did bring this up to the manager on duty and we were kind of shocked at the reply he gave us. To start off, he did offer to take half off of that menu item which was very generous of him. However, he stated that he specifically told the kitchen to not “over season” anything. Which our reply was that there was NO seasoning on anything and he said maybe this plate was just accidentally missed. He then stated that this is also why there is salt and pepper at each table for the customers to season to their liking! My husband and I have eaten at a lot of places fancy and not fancy and we have never once been told to season our own food especially is that plate alone was costing us $100. For dessert we got our glasses of champagne, a slice of cheesecake and the chocolate mocha panacotta. Both items were good, nothing crazy but the champagne flavor was not for us, we ended up not drinking them which was fine because it was included with the price.
Even with some of the hiccups with the food we still very much enjoyed ourselves. Carrie really made our night special with joking around with us and making sure we never had an empty beer glass. We liked the live music was setting the mood for Valentine’s Day. I decided to leave a 4 star overall because the manager did take care of us in the end.
Dana is a total professional. From our very first tour, she was incredibly detail-oriented, walking us through every package and keeping us on a strict timeline during the entire planning process. On the day of the wedding, she was a force of nature. She was personally setting up dining room tables in the morning and ensuring every single vendor was perfectly positioned. Because of her, we had zero fear of anything going wrong; we knew we were in the best hands. Even our other vendors went out of their way to tell us how much they love working with her!
Highlights of the Venue & Service:
The Bridal Suite: We spent the morning here for hair and makeup, and Dana ensured we had everything we needed to stay comfortable and pampered.
The Food: While we were too busy celebrating to eat much, our guests haven’t stopped raving about the chicken and the pasta—it was a huge hit!
The Legendary Cookie Table: Being from Pittsburgh, the cookie table is a major priority. The event team spent an endless amount of time creating a display so perfect I actually went into the kitchen to personally thank them. It was a masterpiece!
We also have to give a massive shout-out to the bartending staff! They were incredible and truly went above and beyond for us. It’s so easy for the bride and groom to get distracted, but the bartender made sure we both had refills the entire night. We never had to wait or even ask—they were one step ahead of us at every turn. That kind of attentive, personalized service is exactly what makes a wedding feel high-end.
If you want a venue that combines a stunning, historic atmosphere with a team that works tirelessly behind the scenes to make your day seamless, book Shakespeare’s. Ask for Dana—she is simply the best in the business!
The French onion soup and desserts were delicious, but the meal, a special of pork fried rice, was absolutely not palatable.
The manager noticed I wasn’t eating my meal, and offered to comp one of our desserts, too, but never actually did.
Edit: good follow-up from management, raising the service two stars, because the owner did reach out.
The service was nice, nice hostess, bar tender and server, but the manager was kind of weird for offering complimentary dessert and not following up on that. ♀️
Definitely a unique spot and still worth the French onion crock on a cold day!
The highlight of my meal was the chicken bruschetta, which was cooked to perfection. The flavors were delightful, and the presentation was top-notch. Every bite was a testament to the chef’s skill and attention to detail.
Overall, the food and service at Shakespeare Castle were amazing. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience. I can’t wait to return
