The lunch buffet menu has enough options for just about everyone. A salad bar and usually a choice of two desserts (one Indian, one American) is included. Both vegetarian and non-veg are offered, as well as rice, naan, and pakoras (which are gluten-free, as is most of Indian food, except for the breads, of course). There are usually a few Mexican or American choices down at the end of the buffet, as well.
I am told the garlic naan is to-die-for but, being gluten-free, I haven’t been able to try it. Spice levels tend to be a little on the high side, with few Indian dishes in the “mild” category, however, the butter chicken and some of the vegetable dishes work for my heat-wimpy palette. I’ll even endure the higher heat levels just to have access to the broad range of flavors offered at lunch.
I do wish that they served a classic Chicken Tikka Masala curry (national favorite of Great Britain) rather than the various concoctions that get labelled with similar names and descriptors like “the classic Indian dish”, but it does seem to be a trend in the Indian restaurants I’ve eaten in elsewhere in America these days to come up with a dish that bears very little resemblence (beyond containing chicken and spices) to the flavors of the most popular dish. It’s just wrong to invent something else and call it Chicken Tikka Masala. My only other complaint is that the fish in their fish dishes is usually catfish, which does not work well with Indian spices. Granted it is a cheap fish and readily available here, but it is just weird in this context.
The decor is quite plain, but clean and otherwise acceptable, with just a few flourishes (I enjoy the napkins folded like flowers in some glasses), and the service is good, not reaching the over-the-top politeness of big-city Indian restaurants.
If there were a star system here, I’d give it four out of five.
P.S. despite what it says here, they are closed Sundays.
This was the first I’ve ever been to an Indian restaurant let alone Indian food, and I’ve got to say I was utterly surprised. The food was delicious (Chicken Tikka Masala $20) even when I was going there as they were about to close. Definitely try the Indian Tea!
Give it a try!
