Social Profile:

Second Salem Brewing Company is a two-barrel nano-brewpub located in the mythical triangle of downtown Whitewater, Wisconsin. In the early 20th century, locals referred Whitewater as “Second Salem” due to its reputation as a site of witch gatherings at the Witchtower (the Starin Park water tower), strange murders, unearthly creatures in the lake and other unexplained phenomena. These events, figures and architecture are part of a collective past that makes our town unique and provides a rich variety of stories to translate into extraordinary beer.

Urban brewpub supplying classic bar fare along with specialty beers, plus a pool table & live music.

Popped in for a couple of beverages after a fun day exploring Whitewater. Great location matched by the great beers and tasty pretzels. Very busy on the night we were there but they were managing pretty well. Would definitely recommend for the beer alone. Plenty of parking if needed. Better to walk!

The Second Salem concept itself is original and very well done. The space is nicely decorated, and the bar is beautifully situated on the water — it feels like it would be an awesome beer garden in the summer. I had the Mexican Larrado beer and it was flavorful.

Food-wise, it was a mixed experience. I ordered the Cottage Pie and had expected a higher-quality beef presentation given the description of Angus beef (and the way it was described, I pictured something more than ground beef). In practice it seemed like ground beef with what tasted like lower-quality (possibly frozen) vegetables, and the seasoning was mild to the point of being bland — very little spice or depth of flavor. My wife ordered the double chicken breast entrée; the chicken was a bit rubbery and the portions were on the small side. Overall, it didn’t feel like a great value for the price.

On the positive side, the burger we ordered seemed like the safer bet and was well done.

One other note: after we paid, we stayed to check out the arcade — it’s a really fun setup, with at least a half-dozen pinball machines and a nice variety of classic video games and modern console-style gaming. Around that time, Bella apparently ended her shift and handed things off to the afternoon/evening crew. After that, the bar was unmanned for at least 15 minutes. We tried multiple times to order drinks and there was no one behind the bar. That’s hard to excuse on a Friday evening with paying customers still onsite.

Overall, we liked the concept and Bella’s service was excellent, but the food quality/value and bar coverage while guests are still onsite could use improvement.

First time eating here an I did ordered out. What I saw on the menu looked really good. We ordered lobster Mac n cheese, cod dinner w/ truffle fries and burger w/fries. The total was 60$, an let me say it was not worth it at all. The Mac n cheese was 24$ alone it was plain noodles were way over cooked and lobster was beyond fishy taste. Plus there literally was 3 nickel size pieces on top n that was it. Cod dinner there was literally so much grease on the bottom. fish was ok but again to greasy, along with the truffle fries I bit into them a grease came out. Burger basket was ok but fries greasy also. The girls weren’t very friendly but maybe just tired we’ll say. Over all the food is beyond not worth the price they are charging. Being that it was my first time I’d rather pay less for a better burger down the street an fish also tbh. Hopefully if I decide to go back to try something else it’ll be better. A truly this place has potential, but with those prices for the quality of the food.

0 stars for service due to Lindsey.

We went out for dinner on February 13 and had a very disappointing experience. Although it was busy, we were patient. We waited 20 minutes after being seated to be acknowledged. Throughout the night, we had no water half the time and had to ask for utensils when our food came out. Our server, Lindsey, never came to our table unless we flagged her down or her coworker literally had to “go find her.” Which, we talked to her co-worker more than our server which I would have tipped if I had cash. Multiple tables that sat after us were served and left before us, yet we were there for nearly two hours. All we got was two southwest wraps and a fish fry (which was amazing btw)! No drinks, just water. It shouldn’t have been a 2 hour meal, with most of the time waiting.

One of the bills did include a 10% tip, so she was not completely stiffed. I tip well and honestly—never have I left a bill untipped, and it would have been well deserved— Lindsey’s poor service and disgusting attitude made it impossible. When she saw my untipped bill, she rolled her eyes at the table and walked away without saying anything—no “thank you” or “have a good night” to my friends who did tip. She then stopped us on the way out, blocked our path, questioned the tip, and became argumentative. Trying to shame customers for not leaving a “good enough” tip in front of other customers is completely unprofessional and unacceptable. She spoke more to us than versus the two hours we were at the table!

To the server: when a table has to wave you down and it still takes you 10 minutes, then you disappear for another 20, you won’t get a tip—and it should NEVER be expected of anyone, especially with such a poor attitude as yours. I hate to say it but I am GLAD I didn’t tip especially when you stopped us, I couldn’t help but chuckle due to the audacity. Your service was unprofessional, and your attitude was disgusting. You as a server failed your responsibility to ensure basic customer service. You didn’t do your job, You didn’t earn your tip.

I’ve been going to this establishment for a while with no issues, even last week when it was busy, and the servers were attentive and kind. Never will I—or anyone I know—return to this establishment again.

My Cottage Pie was very good. I also wanted to try the Skater on Crack beverage. Also yummy! Enjoyed the adult beverage too quickly for a photo.
Grace was our hostess and server. Fabulous personality and made sure we were well taken care of.

Absolutely loved this place! Not only was there excellent craft beer (had the loveliest flight of them), excellent food, and excellent service, the art featuring pieces of Wisconsin and Whitewater legends and lore makes for a singular experience. Highly recommend the Blood Moon beer!

What a fun and exciting experience! I visited with my friends and the restaurant was incredible. The service was wonderful and we had Sarah as our waitress. She was witty, funny, and communicative. The food was delicious. I had the Wisconsin burger with added lettuce and tomato with Brussels as a side. I also had an opportunity to try the cheese curds with my friends. It was incredible and I highly recommend this place to anyone who passes by or is local.

I did a fight of two hazys, winter ale, and amber ale. The hazys were great, the winter was good, and the amber ended with an odd flavor I was not a fan of. Had the cheese curds, which were as expected. The steak was a bit overpriced for the quality. Great atmosphere and an attentive, friendly staff.
