SAVE YOUR MONEY AND TIME!
Unfortunately, our experience at this “restaurant” was extremely unsatisfactory. The fried fish (salmon, cod, and halibut) was very dry, the potatoes in the chowder were undercooked/still crunchy, and the halibut on the salad was very dry, unseasoned, and did not taste good at all!
The service is lackluster and terrible! The employees are kind…. but no one comes by to fill drinks nor ask how your meal is etc etc. It is next to impossible to flag someone down, as the “restaurant” is severely understaffed and the employees are clearly stressed out (only 2 servers and 2 cooks).
Behind the counter, you can visibly see a trash can (standard size trash can), where the cooks are pouring and dumping food into. After pouring and/or dumping food into the trash can, they reused the same pan (the pan was directly in and over the trash can). The disinfectant bucket was in plain view of customers (on top of the counter) and right next to an open pitcher of soda. There were tongs hanging within 1 1/2 feet from the floor and bread on a low shelf (about a foot from the floor). VERY UNSANITARY!!!
Then I tasted the clam chowder.. Now I’m mad that I didn’t order a bowl instead, but there was no way I was going to wait another 20+ minutes.
Definitely in the top 3 of best clam chowder I ever had. The cheese bread was a great surprise to get with it, instead of a bag of crackers. I will be telling everybody that even mention Oak Harbor to me about the amazing clam chowder here. But I also will be telling them about the 20 minutes wait. Definitely worth the wait if you’re not in a rush like I was. I’ll be back if I’m ever in Oak Harbor again.
One improvement they could make would be to tell patrons what they’re out of when they walk in – for some reason we saw that for our order and for other people who walked in, they would wait until they ordered to tell them what they already knew they didn’t have in the kitchen – it was a little frustrating and as a result it took us longer to order. Pro-tip: if you visit here, ask the server what they’re out of when you sit down. Ketchup for fish-and-chips is self-serve from the counter, wait staff don’t bring it to the table with the food. Wait staff might also improve by telling patrons that payment is at the counter when they drop off the check.
Bathrooms are clean and well-stocked.
This restaurant is well taken care of and well loved, and we’d stop again the next time we’re on Whidbey Island or bringing out-of-town visitors to see the sights.
