Everything on the food and beverage menus were seriously so good. I can’t wait to go back and try more! There is a dress code but it is strictly enforced at 10pm when they transition some of the lounge tables to a dance floor. I wore tasteful jeans to dinner and was fine. I can’t wait to go back and am truly obsessed with the vibes!
The sushi was a little disappointing since we are regulars at gi jin and golden gai, but the fish in the sashimi bowl tasted fishy and stale and bland. Moreover, the addition of paddlefish caviar to the toro maki made it salty beyond belief. To address the blandness point, no server ever gave us soy sauce, which made me think that the sashimi bowl would have been seasoned already but it was not – just with sushi rice vinegar. You can already tell looking at the sashimi bowl that it’s a weird mix of chirashi and sashimi plates, with rice at the bottom but no soy sauce on the bowl, and no practical way to mix it as the slices of lemon and leaves have zero purpose.
When we had clearly finished our plates and drinks, servers would come to give us our next dish, but they didn’t ask to or take away our dirty empty plates, crowding our already small table. This happened MULTIPLE times. We also had to flag down our server two times, while they checked in to the table next to us but never really came over. The crab fried rice was good- but why the black truffle???
This place needs to do better for the price point and experience advertised, even accounting for the fact that it’s the strip district.
This review is based on drinks, ambiance, and overall experience since we didn’t eat, but everything we had was great. The cocktails were on point and the vibe was even better. The space is stylish, fun, and yes, even the bathrooms are cute. I usually take pictures of my drinks, but I didn’t take a single one because we were having such a good time from start to finish.
It is loud, but that’s to be expected with a spot like this. If you’re planning on deep conversation all night, this may not be the place. But if you want good drinks, a packed dance floor, and an overall fun night out, Sea Monkey is it. It honestly felt like the finest people in Pittsburgh were all in one room. Can’t wait to come back!
I had such a great time at Sea Monkey in the Strip District. It is a new lounge with a beautiful vibe and delicious food. It was perfect for girl time because it felt intimate enough for conversation, but still lively and fun like a lounge.
Atmosphere: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The decor is gorgeous and very intentional. The lighting is warm and flattering. We sat in a curved booth that felt cozy, comfortable, and elevated. There was a really cool tree feature behind the booth, and the large aquarium screen added an extra touch to the vibe. It felt chic, modern, and inviting.
Food: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
There were three of us and we ordered something from each section of the menu to share. Everything was absolutely delicious. The oysters were so good. They did not have horseradish, but it was not missed at all because the flavor on them was strong in the best way and not heavy. The crab dip was amazing and the pita bread served with it was light, fluffy, and very tasty. We also had the toro caviar maki roll and a California roll, and both were really good. Oh yeah, the crab fried rice was so good! The small plates are filling, and you leave satisfied without feeling heavy or bloated. Unfortunately, we didn’t leave enough room for dessert. So I’ll try that next time.
Drinks: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I do not drink alcohol, and I really appreciated that they made a mocktail for me that felt intentional and grown up. It was made with strawberries, hibiscus, and ginger and it was delicious. It was not overly sweet and it still felt like a real cocktail experience.
Hospitality: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Our waitress was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful without being overbearing. Great service and great energy. Even the uniforms were cute. They wear brown and I love neutral tones, so that was a nice touch.
Parking Note
There is a parking lot across the street, but it was pretty expensive. My parking was $15, which felt pricey just to park for dinner.
Overall
Sea Monkey is definitely worth a visit. Great atmosphere, great food, great drinks, and great hospitality. I will absolutely be back.
