This is an awesome spot! We came here not expecting how amazing the food was. We had a few appetizers and all of them were delicious. The main dishes were really good as well. You can tell the food is made with love. We met the owner and he was amazing. Great service and great atmosphere. We would make this our new favorite restaurant if we were local. I would definitely recommend this place to have lunch or dinner. Even if you’re a bit far this place is well worth it.

The carrot cake was, hands down, the best I’ve ever eaten.
I could stop my post there, followed by a strong suggestion to make the drive for a slice. But I’ve heard that there are people who do not like carrot cake. And you know, we just can’t be friends.
And on the other hand, I wouldn’t want anyone passing up this little gem because the only review was about dessert.
I love when a creative soul takes an old house and creates a public space. The old fireplace in the front parlor, where we dined, was covered in books. Our table rested against tall wood doors. There was fun, eclectic art on the walls.
And again, I could stop there.
But, there was our server. If you are familiar with my posts, you know I only remember the names of servers if they are really horrible or really amazing.
Our server was Gage. He stayed at a respectable distance without crowding. He answered questions honestly. Even made a couple of suggestions. He was funny and engaging and put up with the weird vibe my companion and I always seem to give off, with good humor. Our tea glasses were never empty.
We started with fried green tomatoes. The tomatoes were thick-cut and battered and topped with a delicious pimento cheese, resting on a light sauce. I loved the simplicity. The flavor of the tomatoes came through instead of fighting with an over spicy sauce as with other recipes.
For my entree, I selected the apple and chicken salad. Plenty of thinly sliced apples and tender grilled chicken on a bed of greens with candied nuts and blue cheese crumbles. The dressing was light and tart. My only complaint is the skimpiness of the blue cheese. I would have liked more.
My companion ordered the chicken livers. I did try one. They were battered with a crispy exterior and moist interior. Lots of folks don’t care for liver in any form—and that’s fine, we can still be friends. If this dish is something you like, the recipe here will made you happy. They can be either an appetizer or an entree with sides.
Dessert was—yes, you guessed it—spiced carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. Two layers of moist, rich cake separated by a decadent layer of cream cheese icing. And, yes, spiced carrot cake. I’d never heard of it either. It tasted a bit like Christmas, honestly. This cake should come with a complimentary glass of milk and a blanket.

Screen Door Kitchen has been a favorite place to eat since they were located in Soddy-Daisy and was named “Cafe.” Their food has continued to impress and evolve over the ten plus years we have been dining there.

We stopped in today and found that their menu had changed up. We tried the Chicken Katsu sandwich and Garlic Butter Juicy Lucy burger. Both were fantastic. I was not able to take a picture of the Chicken Katsu since my wife started eating it as soon as it arrived, but trust me, it was awesome. Huge piece of chicken and the red cabbage topping was nice and crunchy adding sweet soy sauce and ginger flavor to the deep fried chicken.

As for the garlic butter Juicy Lucy burger. The Dijon mustard and sauteed onions gave such a nice flavor blend and nose kick. It was so satisfying.

I ordered the broccoli and General Tso’s brussel sprouts as sides (extra charge for second aide). Both were tasty, but the brussel sprouts were out of this world. I would eat brussel sprouts everyday if I could get the receipe and make it at home.

We don’t get to come here as often as we like since it is about an hour away, but if we are in the area, we make it a point to stop for a meal here (and you should, too). Highly recommended!

My first trip to Screen Door Kitchen. It is worth the drive. The fried green tomatoes were perfect. The chicken livers are amazing with just the right amount of breading. Service and atmosphere were excellent and you can bring a bottle of your favorite wine.

The atmosphere was unique. The restaurant is in qnd old Christian school for the children of railroad employees. The pork chop diner was amazing. Two boneless chops of high quality were served on a bed of sliced baby carrots, corn, black beans, onion. The sauce was a buttery olive oil with red pepper. I love my coffee. I was pleasantly surprised when I ordered coffee it came in a French press. The coffee used was from a small local roasting company. If there was anything negative it would be the gravel parking, yet it was adequate in size.
My wife is not very courageous when it comes to trying new foods. Her hamburger sandwich was very good and the diner salad was excellent. She was taken with the homemade ranch. Chocolate cake and biscuits bread pudding top off a wonderful experience.

Nice place. I had the meatloaf and it was delicious. It felt like eating at grandma’s house, very warm and homely. We went there again and I had the Katcu chicken, it was awesome.

Was in town for a wedding weekend and went here Saturday for lunch. It was so good I had to go back and go back the next day before leaving town. Everything our group ordered tasted great and the service was excellent.
Highlights: Mac and cheese, cajun fries, and the big earl ( photo attached )

Catfish was outstanding. Meaty portions of 2 filets with 2 yummy hushpuppies then we ordered collard greens and a salad with a piece of peanut butter pie for dessert. We shared everything and glad we did because it was plenty. Love the atmosphere. Great little gem find.
