I haven’t stopped thinking about Scales. I had to get on a waiting list on OpenTable for my reservation, but it was worth trying to chase an available res. So if you are thinking about it, make sure you plan ahead; they book up QUICKLY. So nice to see something worth the hype on TikTok.
Free valet (iconic), the cutest lobster tank when you walk in, the sweetest waiters…and the food? Incredibly fresh. Like, you can taste the ocean kind of fresh. Every bite was perfectly cooked and unforgettable.
I’m literally dreaming about it just writing this review. We loved it so much, we immediately decided we’re coming back for Juneteenth. That’s how good it was.

Intense umami flavors and the freshest seafood! This is a 10/10 spot and I’ll be back for sure. Highly recommend the Seared Scallops and the Seafood Stew for mains, and the grilled octopus for appetizers. The chocolate cake for dessert was a delightful touch and everything tasted like it came straight from the farm and has a great balance to it. Free Valet service too for easy parking 🙂

This was truly one of the best meals I’ve ever had. We started with the Cloverleaf rolls and ended up ordering several more for the table — they were that good. Soft, buttery, and topped with salt, they were pure heaven. The cornbread was also great, especially with the Thai chili butter, but if I had to choose, I’d go with the rolls.
I’m not much of a seafood person, so I ordered the cheeseburger and was still blown away. The beef pot roast was to die for — so tender you could shred it with a spoon, and the sauce it came with was equally delicious. If you like baked potatoes, the loaded Hasselback potato is a must-try.
We finished with the peach cake, which was moist, flavorful, and topped with oat streusel and ice cream — such a perfect ending. The ambience here is unmatched and the service is fantastic. The food could not be better. If you’re in Portland, Maine, make sure to get reservations.

Found out about this restaurant because I follow Tortoise Supper Club on TikTok. We finally got a reservation, I had been chasing notifications ALL WEEKEND. I’m from Chicago (ish), and was visiting Maine for the weekend. I was so excited – met, and exceeded expectations. Beautiful ambiance, and view of the port. Each entree and appetizer was incredible. We sat at the bar and was able to basically see everything come out. Great service, not a bad encounter with anyone, loved that they offered an additional menu and the chef or cook (in the B hat) was kind enough to let me talk his ear off. Cannot wait to come back, next time I’m in Maine.

Sat at the bar which was comfortable and quieter than where the dining tables were. Fantastic glass of *2024 Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadelle. Crab Fritters were delicious as well as the Potato Crusted Cod and the Fish and Chips. Bar area was busy but our bartender was spot on with drinks and getting food to us. Highly recommend getting reservations well in advance. They take up to 60 days.

I booked a reservation to this restaurant for the only available slot I could get, Monday and 4:45pm. It opened at 4:30pm. They let us sit inside and wait. We didn’t wait for long. Our waitress Paige was very friendly, nice and helpful. She was able to let us know which plates had dairy in the recipe. Everything was delicious and fresh tasting. The fishes were cooked just right. Not a speck of food was left in the end. The oysters here were good size. The decor was simple but they had an interesting fan system. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal.

An absolute gem!!!! I am from Houston, Texas and took my boyfriend here for a surprise trip to Maine and chose to dine at Scales. Absolutely best food I have ever had in any restaurant in all my travels (and I’ve been to 40 states and 30 countries). This presentation of food, the combination of flavors, combination of textures; IMPECCABLE!!!! We were sat immediately for our reservation time of 7:30, although it did take 13 minutes to be greeted or provided with water by our waitress. But once she did come to us, service was excellent from then on. The restaurant was slammed and it was Monday. I will literally come back to Maine from Houston just for this restaurant.

Awesome atmosphere! Delicious food! Service is top notch! And… for a lobster dinner, it’s pretty reasonable (compared to other places) If you’re OK with the porch area (not fully outside and warmed), you don’t need a reservation. You should so for a nice date night!

This is a place for a special night. The food very good. We were a large party so we were seated near the bar. It was noisy. We started with the cornbread and the rolls which were delicious. We had a large table and everyone liked what they ordered. I had the seafood stew it was salty, but good. The oysters were beautiful. I had a problem with the noise. the server could barely hear us when we asked a question.

While visiting Portland, we heard fantastic things about Scales and decided to check it out. Since we didn’t have a reservation, we arrived at 5 PM and were seated immediately. Valet parking was included, which was a nice bonus.
We started with warm, fresh, and delicious Griddled Brown Bread and Cloverleaf Rolls. For appetizers, we ordered Maine Clam Chowder, Smoked Bluefish Pâté, and Endive and Stilton Salad. Everything was flavorful and perfectly balanced, and I was almost full before the main course.
For our entrées, we shared the Pan Roasted Halibut with a loaded baked potato and the Seared Scallops. Both were cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious.
To finish, we had the Caramel Curd Ice Cream, which was incredibly rich and the perfect sweet ending to a fantastic meal.
From start to finish, Scales delivered excellent food, great service, and a wonderful dining experience. Highly recommend arriving early if you don’t have a reservation.Chef kiss!
