Scalawags Whitefish & Chips is a locally owned and operated Northern Michigan tradition. We are a quick-service, casual seafood dining establishment featuring the freshest Whitefish, Perch, and Walleye harvested from the Great Lakes. Scalawags is open from late April through October each year. For more than 30 years, families and groups have planned their vacations and trips to Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island around a meal at Scalawag’s Whitefish and Chips. Whether dining in or taking your meal out for a lake-view picnic, we are dedicated to serving the freshest Great Lakes Whitefish around.

This place really is the best! The fish is so fresh and tender with big meaty pieces. The best whitefish I’ve had in Michigan so far. The coleslaw is perfect to taste (which is very hit or miss when eating out) & the tartar sauce & hush puppies are amazing too. Only open seasonally, this place really is a gem.

We always have to eat here anytime we come to Mackinac City!! We always get the White Fish 3 piece with fries a hush puppies. It also comes with coleslaw and delicious tartar sauce!! I love that they have a patio eating area so you can enjoy the fresh air outside. Definitely will always be our go to for many years to come!! With full bellies and happy hearts! If you haven’t tried this place, you should!! By the way, we got to meet the owner! He’s a very friendly person and we felt very welcomed!!

Read the menue board on the sidewalk and saw they had whitefish and whitefish chowder. I LOVE fried whitefish and have wanted to try whitefish chowder for a long time. What a disappointment! The whitefish had No flavor at all. The coating must have had zero spices in it. Whitefish is a delicate flavor. You have to have flavor in the batter. Speaking of flavor or lack thereof. The whitefish chowder had ZERO flavor as well, except a little from the potatoes. I dumped a bunch of black pepper in it and even added malt vinegar to try to give it flavor. I only ate half the bowl.

We stopped in for some seafood. What a cool looking place. You order at the counter, then find a seat. The inside isn’t huge, but they have more tables outside. We ordered a shrimp basket and a bowl of whitefish chowder. Delicious. They bring your food to you. The staff was very nice. They have a kids menu as well.

The food takes awhile to get to you, but it is so worth it! We had a chicken meal (pictured), perch mean, whitefish meal, and chicken sandwich meal. The food was so hot and fresh. The chicken was the juiciest I’ve had at a restaurant….possibly ever. It was so good! Strongly recommend!!!
