Sayachi – Romantic Spots in Kansas City
Reviews
I recently visited Sayachi and had an incredible experience. The highlight of the meal was definitely the Kansas City Roll and the Gyoza.
The Gyoza: These were perfectly prepared. They had that ideal balance of a tender filling with a crisp, golden-brown sear on the outside that provided a satisfying crunch right from the start.
The Kansas City Roll: A must-try for locals and visitors alike. It was fresh, well-balanced, and stayed true to that “crunchy delicious” profile I was looking for.
If you’re looking for high-quality sushi and appetizers in the city, Sayachi delivers. I’ll definitely be back for more!
We went during happy hour on a (very cold) Saturday and it wasn’t crowded at all. Gyoza was two-time order worthy.
The sangria was a typical sangria. The Hi-Chew refresher was a sweet type drink.
If we were looking for just good traditional sushi, we’d come back if we were in town.
I ordered the 2 rolls for $13 lunch special. Since the crab rangoon were so highly rated online I ordered some of those too. The crab rangoon and the California Roll both appeared to be made with real crab and not the imitation crab you find at other places. They also served it with spicy mayo instead of the usual sweet and sour or duck sauce which was a nice touch.
Bonus that the food was delivered by robot.
The paintings on the wall were a very nice touch too to the decor.
It wasn’t very busy when we went just because it was after lunch and before dinner. I would love to come back for dinner for a night time vibe. It had a nice, sleek and simple atmosphere. I loved the painted cherry blossoms on the wall!
I have never left a negative review of a restaurant, but I was *seriously* disappointed by my experience at Sayachi. I was excited to try this sushi spot when I saw their all-you-can eat special for the Chiefs game advertised on Instagram. I invited some friends to join me. I got there first and ordered a dish to snack on while I waited for them to arrive. I was planning to do the $38 tier of the deal and ordered the shrimp fried rice with plans to order a couple rolls when the rest of my party arrived. When my friends arrived and our server *finally* came back around, they tried to order the $28 tier. The server informed us that if anyone was doing all-you-can eat, everyone had to order the same tier, so they would all have to get the $38 tier since I had already ordered. I didn’t want to force my friends, so I asked if I could just pay for the shrimp fried rice separately at the regular price and go down to the $28 tier. She said she had already rang it in. I asked if she could get it voided and ring the item back in at the regular price and she said no. I explained that no one had told me about the rule when I ordered, the rule was not printed on the menu, and the rule was not included in the social media promotion. The server just restated “that’s the rule” and said she didn’t know who seated me. I pointed out who sat me and the server told me that she is the manager. Our server did not offer any other solution or to ask the manager to find a solution, insisting that everyone in our part of 5 would have to order the $38 all-you-can-eat since I had ordered it for myself before they arrived. Rather than force all my friends to do that, I paid for my own ticket and we all left and went to Brookside Sushi for a lovely meal. After tax and a $1 tip (never before in my life have I left a bad tip), my total came to $42, and all I got was shrimp friend rice and four hangry and indignant friends.
I understand that an all-you-can-eat special is difficult to regulate, but it was infuriating that NO ONE explained this rule before it was too late, it wasn’t printed anywhere, and there was no attempt made by the service staff to remedy the situation. I have sympathy for a server who “doesn’t make the rules” as she repeatedly pointed out, but she did not offer any solution or offer to speak to her manager about the solution I suggested.
I evaluate the price of sushi in a restaurant based on the price of their rainbow roll. Here it is $16. That is the most expensive rainbow roll I have ever seen in the midwest. Lunch for two with a Coke and a beer cost $50.
I don’t see myself having lunch here everyday, but I will definitely consider it again for some special occasions.
