Reviews
To be completely honest, this is the best Thai food I’ve had in a very, very long time. I’ve tried Thai food at plenty of places around Vancouver, including some well-known spots and mall food court restaurants that people often recommend, but this place completely beats them all.
We started with a virgin piña colada for my wife, which was refreshing and nicely balanced. For our appetizer, we ordered the Deep Fried Tofu (Tofu Tord), crispy fried tofu cubes served with a sweet dipping sauce. It’s a simple dish, but it was perfectly done.
Next came the Som Tum (Papaya Salad), and this was easily one of the highlights of the meal. I’m honestly not even a salad person, but I could have finished that entire dish by myself. It was incredibly fresh, bright, and flavorful. My wife has had Thai food in many places across Vancouver and North America, and she often says it rarely matches the authentic flavors she expects. But this Som Tum absolutely hit the mark for her. She was genuinely thrilled with it.
For our mains, I ordered the Kao Pad Krapow (Thai Basil Fried Rice with Chicken), and my wife had the Pad Kee Mao Noodle (Drunken Noodle) with vegetables. Both were outstanding, deeply flavorful, perfectly cooked, and clearly made with care.
Another thing we really appreciated was how accommodating the menu is for different dietary preferences. There were plenty of vegetarian and vegan options available, and in some cases the staff even asked whether we wanted the vegan sauce option or the traditional fish sauce. That level of flexibility was great to see.
Unfortunately, when the food arrived we dove straight in and forgot to take photos. The only pictures I have are of the leftovers we brought home, so they’re in takeout containers and don’t really do justice to how nicely the dishes were plated or how great everything tasted.
All in all, this was an excellent experience. If you’re looking for authentic, delicious Thai food in Vancouver, Sawasdee is absolutely worth a visit. Just remember to plan ahead or make a reservation, especially since they close earlier than many other places.
the most memorable dishes were probably the appetizers. the flower dumplings had a sticky, gooey, mild/boiled-tasting wrapping, but it was filled with super sweet and flavourful minced meat. the stuffed chicken wings were juicy, hot explosions of crispiness—they felt very fresh out of the fryer, and i really liked dipping it in the sweet, honey-like sauce.
we got a half pork jowl and half tiger beef platter, and even though the tiger beef was just a TAD tough/chewy (as beef often is), the pork jowl was OUTSTANDINGGGG and had the perfect flavour and bouncy texture. both meats had a smoky, roasted taste, and i liked the slight char on the pork as well. pairing it with the aromatic, soft, and subtly sweet coconut rice was really good (although the sticky rice was a bit hard, dry, and chewy).
i also really enjoyed the tom kah, which was a sweet, spicy soup with a really strong coconut-y flavour filled with juicy, moist strips of chicken, and the pad see ew, which was, again, very flavourful and yummy, with that great wok fried fragrance bursting out.
for dessert, the sago with sweet corn was super interesting. it was served hot, and the sweetness of the corn was kind of subtle yet really shone through at the same time, pairing well with the slimy coconut milk and chewy bouncy sago.
Fiancée said the thai milk tea reminded him of chatime so he said it was alright. The crying tiger beef, was a bit more tough then I remember for the outer parts. Pad Thai was really good, a lot of protein (tofu and chicken) in the portion but a lot of bean sprouts that we didn’t prefers. Stuffed chicken wings were good but some of the chicken had less filling due to the bones which we didn’t like.
Definitely try to make a reservation, we were only able to get an earlier spot, but when we saw a lot of people waiting. For the price and portion size, I think this place is really good so highly recommend trying it out!
The food is delicious,
portions are generous, and the taste is just like Thailand.
Highly recommend!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Especially the Pad Prik Gaeng Gai.
(it’s so good, even though I forgot to take a clear photo this time. ☺️ ☺️)
➡️Tom Yum – 5/10 – A little too sour and tastes like tomato soup. Good thing is it wasn’t too spicy.
➡️Pad Thai – 7/10 – It was good but not a surprising flavour.
➡️Thai Green Curry – 6/10 – The first taste was sweet but the taste of coconut and spiciness kinda balances out.
➡️Satay Chicken – 6/10 – Meat was tender. The sauce mostly tastes like peanut sauce but not the usual satay sauce.
Just a little bit disappointment here..we found a hair inside the green curry after we had a few bites. I couldn’t take a picture cuz it happened too fast. One of the waiter took the dishes and asked if we wanted a new one or they could cancel it for us. We just didn’t feel like eating it anymore…
We ordered:
1. Tom Yum Soup (small): It was very delicious.
2. Thai Chicken Satay with Peanut Sauce: The sauce was amazing, and the chicken was perfectly cooked.
3. Pad Thai: It had fantastic flavours.
4. Crying Tiger Beef: My favorite dish!
The atmosphere was cozy, and the service was excellent. Highly recommend visiting!
Busy on weekends. Minimal service.
