Late Post: I ate here back in the fall with my gf and the food and service was remarkable! The staff was friendly and attentive. There was a wonderful selection of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages to choose from as well. For starters we ordered the Asian sticky ribs and the Brussels sprouts which were absolutely delicious!!! We were pretty full after the appetizers and decided on salads as our main. I got the house and my girl the Caesar. When I tell you that house salad with the cheese hush puppies and homemade dressing was the best salad I’d ever had, I am not lying! I’ve been meaning to get back for dinner or brunch since we came in for lunch that day, but the whole experience lives rent free in my head. I cannot wait until I am able to revisit this gem

Amazing first visit. Loved everything. We started with Braised Beef Bruschetta, it was amazing and huge portion. For the mains we enjoyed Sticky Ribs, House Salad with amazing cheese hush puppies and the Sashitto Pepper Burger with She Crab soup with tons of lump crab. Everything was so good including the service. The ribs were off the chain. You can tell all the food is fresh and made with care. We will be back.

Satè in Newport News was a great experience from start to finish.

We started with the mac & cheese egg rolls and the hot honey oysters — both were legit. The egg rolls were crispy and loaded, and the oysters had the perfect sweet-heat kick. Solid way to start the meal.

For mains, we had Nana’s Chicken and the Shrimp & Grits. Both were done correctly and complete in flavor. No shortcuts, no disappointment.

The atmosphere was awesome — super mixed and lively crowd with great energy. Felt like the kind of place you want to hang out, not rush through. Service was on point the whole time. Friendly, fast, and dialed in. We’ll definitely be back.

My wife and I were incredibly disappointed with our special valentine’s dinner tonight at Sate.

First the good.
Food was unique, made with care and attention to detail. The highlight of the night. Our server Andrew did a great job.

Unfortunatley, the ambiance was horrible. It was jarring to compare the food and Andrew’s work to how Sate took care of its Valentine’s day guests.

Candidly – we should never have to share our table with another random couple on a fancy dinner date where the minimum bill is $344. Seems like Sate was doing a money grab trying to stuff us in like sardines…. Ive attached a picture of the bill – we didnt get any alcohol or pay for anything other than the standard (and only offer for the evening) 5 course meal. Ive also attached a picture of the seating arrangement showing the other couple sharing our table.

The room we were in was very unpleasant, overhead lights were incredibly direct and harsh. The music was blaring and had no theme… no soft jazz or romantic…it was boucing between hip hop, 90s…just no good for what they were advertising was a specific romantic dinner. Additionally, the place setting was missing glasses for my side.

A small point – Multiple servers were wearing crocs…which isnt a huge deal but for the price and advertising that was made…it did not meet expectations.

We wont be going back.

Sequoia was very professional, kind and attentive. I was nervous, but she helped me select the duck tacos which were amazing! Nice ambience. My drink stayed full and my table was cleared by her and other nearby servers. Overall 10/10 would recommend especially for the BLT STACK!!

How did I not know about this place before last week? It’s a fantastic addition to the Newport News dining scene, however long it’s been open. The meal started with complimentary rolls and a sweet-savory butter that got divided votes: my husband loved it but I found the combination of rosemary, vanilla, and honey disconcerting. The rolls were fabulous. For mains, I had the Chilean sea bass, beautifully cooked with a golden crust, served with a butternut squash purée and decadent Brussels sprouts cooked in duck fat. The purée was a bit spicy for me, but my spice tolerance is zilch. The Brussels sprouts were heavenly, perfectly cooked and unctuous, if a bit salty. (Let me hasten to add that I’ve almost completely eliminated salt from my diet – doctor’s orders – and as a result I’m now hyper-aware of it. That’s on me, not the kitchen.) The greens on top of the bass were a nice counterpoint to the fish, but the fresh ginger julienne was a little overpowering for me. My husband had the scallops and risotto, with the same phenomenal Brussels sprouts, and everything disappeared quickly. Our server Krysta was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and she kindly let me yammer about my server experience back in the day. Highly recommended! (We’ve decided to go back and order some of the yummy-looking appetizers and desserts, and we’ll definitely ask to be seated in Krysta’s station.)

Oh. My gosh. This food is insanely good. My boyfriend and I tried Sate for the first time a few days ago and we were not disappointed! Our meals were made even better by our waitress Christa; she was so kind and attentive! Unfortunately, they were out of the potato pave, but the manager immediately made up for it by offering us a complimentary dessert. We cannot wait to come back

Long review..

First time customers and we’ll be going back. Setting up a reservation was easy but time slots fill up quickly. Not aware we’re we’d end up sitting to my Husband and I went with it. Upon arrival the hostess greeted us with a friendly smile (I cannot recall her name but she had blonde hair college student) and started to head towards the bar area. I was not overly excited about the table and asked if we could have another table. She checked her seating and got us a table in the dining area. She was no aware of this being our first time and it was our anniversary. In doing this she made the experience that much more enjoyable. She then asked if this was our first time after sitting us and complimented the restaurant with information we needed to know about menu items and reservations ( mostly how busy it can get) . We went during the tree lighting so this quaint restaurant was busy. Not all tables were used but it was a little loud in the bar area. However, it didnt interrupt the dining experience. We did not get waited on quickly due to the large table that was ahead of us but when we were greeted by Andrew he is STALLER!!Very knowledgeable about the menu, informative about new and seasonal items with what was in the item. Also, let us know about different menus during brunch/lunch. I thought that was pretty cool of him to do that. We looked over the menu well we were waiting so ordering was a breeze. Andrew got our order correct and had it timed out to bring are starters first and are meal once we finished the starters. We weren’t rushed, dishes were moved away when he checked on us, water refills were given promptly, and we were left to enjoy our date/meal. Andrew knows his job and does it well! Service like this makes it a guarantee repeat customer(s).

We ordered
Crispy Brussel Sprouts- saucey with big flavor. Bitter from the brussel and sweet from the maple and cranberry.

Mac and cheese eggroll- Just put 2 orders in and dont share. These are a perfect finger food item. The sauce just amplifies the creamy cheese filling of the egg rolls. Green chimichurri was not needed for this in my opinion.

Crab Cakes- gamer changer to other restaurants. Lumps of flakes crab throughout the cake, textured with veggies, and seasoned perfectly. The dill aioli was combined with the corn mélange was the right amount of sweet to get the dill flavor. Butternut Squash was delicious by itself and as were the Brussels they paired beautifully with the cake. Presentation was well done!

Espresso crusted lamb chops- Presentation was beautiful. Lamb is a hard meat to cook if your experienced with rack of lamb. I had ordered for rare I had 2 out of the 3 rare and one being seasoned perfect but fatty and cooked medium. However, the mashed potatoes were smooth and creamy, the touch of the rendering from the lamb chop juice itself made for a refreshing bite. Asparagus was cleaned and crisp with a dash of seasoning to tie in everything. The chimichurri was spicy enough to make it a balanced in my favor. Will order again but will ask if another chop to complete the whole satisfaction.

Dinner rolls and butter……just order another basket because these are fluffy, soft, and a bakers dream to achieve small pillows of dough! Just load the butter on!

Overall if your going to wow your palette and want to enjoy fine cuisine then this place is the go to spot. Impress yourself or a date. Leave the kiddos at home and enjoy the ambiance.

Very nice decor, but not so nice that you can’t feel like you can relax. There is literal lounge area in the front.
Great location in City Center.
I went on a Sunday which only had the brunch menu, and while I wanted the Nana’s chicken lunch/dinner dish, my server, Anisa, made a great suggestion which did not disappoint.

I ordered the Hot Honey Chicken Cronut, but they were serving them on biscuits that day and I asked for the jam on the side.
Chicken was juicy, and good by itself.
Fries were well seasoned, also good by themselves.

Look forward to coming back to get the Nana’s chicken lunch/dinner dish.
Thank you!

The kitchen saved what could’ve been a very poor experience. The flavors were excellent, the food was well prepared, came quickly (actually too quickly believe it or not), and the portions were generous.

However, the customer service was quite poor, and there are a few pieces of constructive criticism that I would like to share with management since we didn’t have an opportunity to give our feedback at the restaurant (which would’ve made us felt heard and less miffed upon leaving). The table next to us was also sending back food, and I was surprised that a manager wasn’t circulating to smooth over some of the errors that were being made…

Some thoughts:

The tables here are small and packed in tightly. The menus provided at the start of service literally hang off of the table. The appetizer plates are also comically small (maybe ~3-4″ in diameter). While I would’ve appreciated that relative to the tabletop size, the bruschetta appetizer we ordered was piled high with beef, lettuce, sticky sauces, etc. Literally the size of a medium flatbread pizza.
This made for an excellent portion, but the pieces were cut larger than the plate itself, and we had no way to cut or break the pieces cleanly at the table. I should’ve taken a picture, but it is definitely a miscalculation in dish design. It prompted a trip to the bathroom to wash sticky hands for both my wife and I, and covered a napkin in sauce that was never replaced by waitstaff when we asked later in the visit. I was glad I was not on a date, because that would’ve been almost impossible to eat with dignity.

I mentioned that the food was prepared too quickly, and I say that because it was delivered to our table before our appetizer scraps, plates, and soiled napkins were removed from our table. It made the timing feel off and the meal feel less attentive and rushed.

It turns out my wife’s order was taken incorrectly and the food that was delivered was not what we asked for. The young woman delivering our food went back to double check when I informed her it didn’t look right, and she came back to tell me that “that’s what the screen says.”
“Excuse me?”
“Would you like me to let your waitress know?”
“Yes, please do.”
…Only for us to wait on our waitress who apparently didn’t have any communication with the busser prior to checking back in on our table. I might have glazed over in frustration, but I genuinely am not sure if our waitress apologized for the mistake before bringing the correction to the kitchen.

The kitchen rescued the situation once again by preparing my wife’s correct order in very short order, and only left me eating alone for a few minutes (after a few minutes of waiting out of politeness before my wife acknowledged that my $55 plate wouldn’t be as tasty cold).

This meal was for my birthday and I still had a positive experience, but I have had better service at low-dollar chain restaurants. Also, why even ask if you are celebrating an occasion if the hostess or waiter isn’t going to acknowledge it? I didn’t need a song sung to me or a free piece of dessert, but that’s something very simple that can make the experience feel a little more special.

I don’t know, this had the potential to be a 5-star experience and management stepping in could’ve kept it at 4-stars, but I left feeling 3 was fair, and I don’t think anyone expects that at this price point. Hopefully someone will read this and consider making some small changes to improve the experience for guests in the future.
