December 2025 Japanese handroll bar restaurant finally makes it to the SFO area. This single roll by roll process with special attention given to each roll makes dining here an omakase feel.
Depending on the person making the rolls, the process is highly personalized but the menu makes for a simple way of ordering and knowing what to expect.
The counter and bar style layout creates opportunities to socialize and be more approachable to the server as well.
The service is very prompt and attentive

The food was absolutely delicious — the ingredients were perfectly balanced in both texture and flavor. The atmosphere was great, and I really appreciated the thoughtful touch in the restroom: providing personal hygiene items for women and even toothpaste. It’s nice to see such genuine care for guests!

I come here every time I’m in SF – the best hand rolls I’ve ever had hands down!! I don’t know how they keep their seaweed soooo crispy and fresh but it really makes the rolls have such a great bite and mouthfeel! Service is great as well, the food comes out super fast. It’s a bit pricey but definitely worth it for how fresh and delicious everything tastes. The ambiance is cute as well, they really take care into making sure customers are satisfied. Definitely recommend not coming during peak hours though, the wait can get pretty long!

Absolutely fantastic dining experience!
Everything was delicious—especially the tempura, which was perfectly crispy and full of flavor . The seaweed wrapping the rice and handrolls was unbelievably fresh and crunchy—I’ve never had anything like it! The staff were incredibly friendly and professional, making the whole experience even more enjoyable. The sake and wine selection is excellent, too.
It’s a great spot for a date, but also perfect if you’re dining solo. I can’t wait to go back!

Intimate dining experience with the freshest fish – i could eat tons of these hand rolls! Personal favorites were the yellowtail and salmon!

We’ve been here over a dozen times, but this was by far the worst experience. If you don’t want hand rolls as thick as chopsticks, avoid the chef with mixed black and white hair. The chef with tattoos made every roll noticeably better. Several long-time servers provided very poor service. Very disappointing — we won’t be coming back.

Overpriced for the level of service. Staff was rude, smirking, and unprofessional. Including tips in the bill clearly does not guarantee basic respect.
We’ve been here several times, but it’s clear this place is losing customers because of poor staff.
We will not return and do not recommend it, especially for any special occasion.

I visited Saru Handroll Bar for a late afternoon lunch, and it was the perfect time to go since it gets quite busy during dinner. I ordered the seaweed salad and three hand rolls, all of which were incredibly fresh and flavorful. If you’re looking for a more filling meal, I’d recommend getting 4-5 rolls for the perfect balance of satisfaction!

Saru Handroll Bar is an absolute gem! I absolutely love this place – it’s amazing and truly wonderful. From the moment I walked in, the space felt cool and inviting. It’s big enough to feel comfortable and offers a relaxed vibe, perfect for sitting down with friends and enjoying good food and great conversation.
The food here is incredible. I’ve tried a variety of items on the menu, and everything exceeded my expectations. The handrolls, in particular, are a standout. The rice is warm, perfectly seasoned, and easily the best I’ve had in San Francisco – it adds a whole new level of flavor to the handrolls. The salmon handroll is my favorite! The fish is cut beautifully, with small, tender pieces that are full of flavor. Each bite was perfection.
The soup is another highlight. It’s not overly salty, just balanced and comforting. I couldn’t resist finishing the entire bowl. There are still so many other dishes on the menu that I can’t wait to try, and I know they’ll be just as fantastic.
