Went to the 3rd St Market location, I ordered the Pad Thai and Eggrolls, friend ordered the Brisket Fried Rice. I did not order the ‘classic’ Laotian dishes as I get skeptical when Lao/Thai/Hmong places only serve sausage with rice and pepper. Fried rice is hard to get wrong; it’s an easy A pass due to the savory charcoal flavor and tenderness of the beef. However, anyone can do fried rice, it’s not a Laotian dish.
Pad Thai was odd. While you could taste the tamarind, it lacked the depth and harmonized ‘punch’ of sweet and sour that Pad Thai is known for. It was also missing umami due to the lack of fish sauce. I had to pour my eggroll sauce into the dish to give it more oomf. I also didn’t realize this place puts frozen baby corn, broccoli, and chunks of carrots in their Pad Thai. Sorry, but I don’t think our ancestors grew these vegetables in the jungle. It’s an odd inclusion in the dish that is not authentic. Is this Chinese takeout?
The eggrolls were a flop, they tasted like eggrolls from bad Chinese takeout. You can usually tell if an eggroll is fresh or not from the filling mixture. The filling tasted old, I think the eggrolls were frozen? This is attributed to the extra moisture from dethawing via the cooking process – the extra moisture from the cabbage will create a sour taste opposed to a freshly made eggroll. I had my friend try and she agreed. Lao/Viet/Thai/Hmong are known for having better eggrolls, so this was upsetting.
Overall, this is a fast food Asian joint catered towards a certain demographic with the crutch of Asian ‘exotic’ novelty and appeal for a growing city. I’m happy these flavors are on the radar, but I’d be surprised to hear anyone of SE Asian background content with this. You might have to be very unfamiliar with this type of cuisine to call it great, but any representation is better than none. What makes food great, especially for any major metro, is the flavor. The authenticity and passion for your culture and heritage. None of that was present in my meal today.
FC Bahn Mi (7/10) – this was good, decent portion, the sauce had a good kick.
Sap Sap fried rice (1/10) – the chicken was for sure like a day old and hanging around. It was hard and tasted old like I wouldn’t even feed it to my dog type old. Lacked flavor.
Overall – this is a first and last for us.
